perspective, what the state does and has been trying to do is he is indicate judges to listen for the buzz words and listen, really be able to hear what a woman is saying to them and to recognize what the lee that the is. >> different issues of power and control. you can't see your friends. you can't see your family. her paycheck going into only his bank account, certain issues of control. starts with small psychological abuses and then starts to escalate. but i think what every woman needs to do who might be in this situation is always have a safety plan meaning even if you are not ready to leave. even if you are not ready to call the police, even if you are not ready to come to court, what we want you to do is have a safety plan. have a hidden cell phone that can dial 911 just in case it really does escalate to a lethal point. have a little suitcase packed
6:31 am
somewhere that you are ready to leave when you need to. a friend, one person who you can call and say i'm in trouble and they will be there for you. >> somebody who knows. >> somebody knows. there are organizations out there who can give you real structured safety plans and a checklist of things that you should do. >> that's very good advice. where the men are concerned in your estimation, there has to be hope, there has to be some sort of education for those who -- hopefully for those who have not committed a criminal act or act of violence but hopefully can be rehabilitated. >> i think education is always important. people need to understand that communication is very important in human relationships. >> yes. >> regardless if they are intimate and if they are not. but people have to be -- understand how to effectively communicate with one another
6:32 am
without any type of physical altercations and, so, that's important, very, very important. in many instances, folks don't know how to effectively communicate with one another verbally. >> judge freeman, i don't want to miss this point. how significant is this and can it be on children seeing this domestic violence and i wonder does seeing it, whether they are victims themselves or observe it put them at risk to be those who commit violence down the line. >> 100%. it's shown statistically that this is -- could be intergenerational. and i explain that to people who are in front of me and i will say to them, would you want your daughter to be treated the way you are treating this woman. >> the answer is always no. >> right? what they don't understand is the behavior that they are seeing at home is what they
6:33 am
think is normal. it's what the daughter is going to assume is a normal way for a man to be treating her and for a son to assume that's the normal way to be treating their significant other. >> before you -- i have to have you address. this we hear this so much. those of us who observe this, those who are not in the midst like you and iman of seeing what goes on, please address this, why doesn't she just leave him? why doesn't she just go? it's not that simple. >> it's not. there are so testimony complicated reasons. sometimes it's as basic as financial. he is the main financial source. where is she going? just go but not everyone has a mom to run to. so, where is she going. then there are cultural. there are so many cultural concerns. i know in the jewish religious we have a strong concept of peace in the house and that is seen as the woman's responsibility. when a woman can't make that happen in her house, she sees
6:34 am
it as her fault, that she is doing something wrong and if she would just change this or just change that it will be better. >> i do want you to address this. i'm not attaching blame but where women and children are victims, there has to be a point where the person being victimized, where children are concerned says i have to act and do something even if that is calling police. do you agree? >> well, i would never make that call for anyone. it really does depend. you have to realize, also, when you start with psychological and emotional abuse which then leads to physical abuse, the person has been so broken down and their confidence is shattered and the abuser sometimes will make that woman feel like she is hopeless without him. you are nothing without me. if you leave you are nothing. or, which is even scarier to women, if you leave you will never see these children again
6:35 am
and that, they would rather stay there to protect their children and to have their children than to leave and really be fearful that he will take her children. >> we got to go. we have counseling for women and men and children as it relates to the program you have assembled. >> we will be providing with the clergy who attend because on october 1st, if company get this in, on october 1st we are having an interfaith dialogue. we are invite willing all clergy of all faiths to attend and having speakers that will talk about -- clergy speaking, attorneys speaking, advocates speaking and we will be providing resources for the clergy who will be able to then disseminate that in their congregations on the october 25th weekend at the meyerberg senior center and you can go on the governor's web site and he will have the information there and you can register because this is a partnership between the governor's office and the mayor's office.
6:36 am
i want to give them a plug for their cooperation. >> okay. >> they were receptive to the idea and supportive. >> thank you for coming on. >> thank you very much. >> and the advice that you offered. judge freeman thank you for being on the front lines and taking an active role. i think our conversation today advances this beyond just the problem to what can we do to solve it, to stop it from happening. >> that would be my hope. >> i want to have you guys come back on and talk about the progress. fair enough. >> that would be fabulous. >> for more information on the domestic violence initiative, go to this web site, goci.maryland.gov. it is being held october 1st from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. -- 3:00 p.m. it will last an extra hour. 10:00 to 3:00 at the meyerburg center. interfaith sermons will be held the weekend of october 25th through the 27th. if you know someone who is in need of help, they can call the @6
