8:14 am
to worry about. right now you decide 2016. a new fox news poll shows ted cruz edging out donald trump in iowa. the poll came out friday. it shows cruz with 27%, trump with 23%. marco rubio is third at 15%. on the democratic side bernie sanders leads hillary clinton 50-37% among new hampshire. democratic primary voters. in the meantime, back to donald trump, he's still going after ted cruz, questioning if he's even eligible to become president. >> because it's all of hard to run when you have that hanging over your head. he was born in canada. he was -- you know, i think partial canadian citizen. i guess he was a joint and frankly i think it's something he has to get solved. >> tom: so meanwhile cruz raising some eyebrows with comments made during a campaign stop in iowa. he was talking about the 2012
8:15 am
in benghazi libya when he took a swipe at hillary clinton. she was secretary of state when that happened. cruz implied clinton lied about this. >> you know, i'll tell you in my house if my daughter catherine, the 5-year-old, says something that she knows to be false, she laf [laughter] >> well, in america, the voters have a way of administering -- >> tom: what he ended up america -- in america voters have a way of administering a spanking. frank torres is here to talk about all of this. [laughter] >> where to start. >> tom: right. i don't understand -- i kind of get the analogy he's making but it is certainly an unusual way. is there any danger for him in making this analogy i think it was p.t. barnum no publicity is bad publicity, something like that? >> it sounds a little bit awkward comment but plays well with some of the voters
8:16 am
he's doing so well. yeah, there's a chance to go too far with these things obviously there aren't going to be any spank to go see hillary clinton -- spankings to hillary clinton. yeah, while it is edgy and a little bit out there, it's not a terribly awful thing that happened. >> tom: i believe it was a week or so ago we were talking about ted cruz's lead in iowa and i believe it was -- it was right around 10 points then and now according to the latest fox news poll it's down in the low single digits. what's that tell you. >> it's going to be a fight down to the wire it will be either ted cruz or donald trump. although some other candidates have snuck up in the past, but, you know, ted cruz plays really well in iowa with evangelicals, he's hitting that right pitch right now with those voters. a lot of people think he's a little bit more electable than donald trump who says a lot more remarks and he's running on all cylinders going into the final stretch of iowa. >> tom: so bernie sanders
8:17 am
13-point lead in new hampshire over hillary clinton. should we take anything from that as far as on the national picture? >> not on a national level new hampshire that's around bernie sanders' neck of the woods and he plays very well up there but hillary clinton -- her campaign can't fall asleep they have to look at all these poll numbers and consider, hey, we're not out of the woods yet. bernie sanders is going to continue 12 degrees more mainstream and more voters going to start tuning in will have a hard time his platform but hillary needs to be aware of these numbers and can't take any of these things for granted. >> tom: nationally trump and hillary no other trends you're seeing. >> it's a fight between donald trump and cruz and rubio pops into those numbers every once on a while. on the left side it's mostly hillary clinton but you see anomalies like that but with bernie sanders. none of these primaries wrapped up although hillary is in good shape right now. >> tom: you think cruz is making some krul gains nationally?
8:18 am
everybody goes up and down. even trump goes up and down from time. he had always one group of dedicated supporters that had been following him since he got elected. he has a more traditional conservative message that we're hearing from a lot of other candidates right now. >> tom: all right. we'll see you next weekend when we will play what did donald trump say this week. >> sounds good. >> tom: it's 8:19. the first gop debate happens next week. fox business network hosting the republican candidates in north charleston, south carolina. that happens next thursday. all right. 8:19. let's talk about the weather. this fog looks pretty nasty out there, brooks. >> meteorologist: yeah, central florida, this is our foggy season. wintertime we see a lot of fog and that's what we're seeing very low visibility, anywhere that's in orange and red we're talking about less than a half or quarter mile visibility. volusia county, flagler county, orange county parts of seminole, brevard, osceola county again it's 8:19. fog this time of the year
8:19 am
off in the 8:30 to 9:30 hour time frame. we'll keep an eye on it i think some of it could linger until 10:00 very thick fog outside. we'll stay mainly dry through midweek, a few showers later on this evening possible. we'll dive into that in a minute but mainly dry through midweek. cool weather starts tomorrow. really cool monday, tuesday and wednesday and we could be seeing a wet windy system late this week. outside right now, amway camera tells the story. you see parts of i-4 here, go back -- i-4 east towards seminole county can't even see it folks, very low visibilities all through central florida. should start to see the fog burn off again in the next hour or so. one of the reasons why we've got some decent breezes outside. hopefully that'll help mix up and circulate the atmosphere just stlairlths -- starting off much colder air poised to come back. all that cold air is going to
8:20 am
hours and we'll have some chilly conditions as we go through the early part of the week. good news, though, we were thinking earlier this week we might have some storms this afternoon into tonight. now, it looks like the storminess will head to the north and we'll just have maybe a couple of showers i don't think we're going to see -- i think most of us could stay dry. as a matter of fact, that's what the forecast shows. all the way through the afternoon, high and dry, could be a really nice day today. this evening, some showers coming off the gulf of mexico. no thunderstorms in the forecast. midnight just a couple of light showers out there and then tomorrow morning maybe a couple more showers as you head out the door to work and church but again we're talking about just a 20% chance for rain today and a at the point % chance you'll see some showers early tomorrow morning. high of 8 afternoon, enjoy it, folks, with partly cloudy skies in the 70s tomorrow but, look, monday, tuesday, wednesday, high temperatures only in the low to mid-60s and then we'll keep an eye on our late week weather system, time? >> tom: all right.

so how does children's social life really affect their health. >> good morning, tom, thank you for having me. in this modern day age we think children are sedentary and so that's why they're eating bad food, watching video games on the computer and social media, not getting exercise but it turns out the biggest factor in their deterioration of health is lack of meaningful social connections which means an in-person connection with a family or a friend. that a social connection is not one that you have with a computer screen or smart phone. >> tom: yeah, so what does the social isolation which is what we're talking about do to physical health and how? >> as a brain and mental expert the "i" in illness is isolation. when we have a friendly loving connection with another human being whether it's a friend, family member even a casual stranger it releases certain bio

so drones are without a doubt some of the hof gifts there are for adults and kids. i saw one stat the other day says 700,000 of them are going to be bought this year in the united states alone. but flying them can be tough and there are rules you need to think about that can be a little confusing at times so this morning we brought an expert in to help you sort it all out. kevin hins good morning from the orlando robotics club. thank you for being here. >> great to be here. >> tom: it's not drones for lack of a better phrase are taking off right now. right? >> they're great. i call them fun. >> tom: i like that. >> by the way, we're going to be drones safety at the public library in mount dora. if anyone wants to attend it's open to the public. >> tom: and that's today. >> it's in two weeks from today. >> tom: i'm sorry. january 23rd what time? >> 2:00. >> tom: so people can come if
9:30 am
drones and learn the rules -- >> yes. >> tom: let's talk about briefly the rules if you will because that's one of the issues i that's going on, some people don't necessarily know them so they can't really follow them. what are the big things that people need to know. >> well, number 1 the faa just recently passed a rule that you need to register them so my faa registration there that i'm signed up with the faa and that allows me as a hobbist for noncommercial purposes to fly anything from about half a pound to about 55 pounds. >> tom: how much does this weigh? >> this one is about 2 pounds. >> tom: i got this little quad copper at christmas for my family. this only weighs a quarter pound so that is below that restriction so i don't have to register that? >> that's right, tom. >> tom: and you also have to be very careful where you fly it, right? >> yes, sir. a lot of commonsense. don't fly over people. only fly people who want the drone to be near them. maybe you and your friends out. i'll take the drone, it feel.
9:31 am
there's nothing magical. it's a toy helicopter really. >> tom: it's made from a kit. you made this? >> it's made from a kit with about an extra $100 for video electronics. >> tom: well, let's get it flying here. >> okay. >> tom: if we can. >> okay. >> tom: hey, michael, can you see these? check this out. i don't know if you can see inside or not. these are goggles that allow you to see what the camera is seeing that's on this drone. pretty cool stuff all right. so let's get er flying, kevin. you also have to be careful -- you can't be anywhere near with an airport near these babies, right? >> that's correct. you have to stay at least 5 miles away from an airport and under 400 feet. now, there are other types of drones. some are easier easy to fly than others. this one auto levels so it will actually level itself out for me which takes a lot of work loud for me out which is kind of nice.
9:32 am
it's a beautiful little area that you have here at your fox station. >> tom: now, see, you make it look easy i have to tell you as someone who is learning to fly a quad copter for the first time in a few weeks it's not that easy. you do need to practice. >> i practiced at home for -- i probably practiced for about 50 hours over the last few years learning to fly quad copters. >> tom: as a hobbyist you're allowed to do this but if you -- you need to know this, if you do want to fly one of these for commercial purposes you would have to have a minimum sport pilots license, right? >> commercial purposes i don't have direct experience -- >> tom: i'm pretty sure that's what it is which is the reason i'm flying one. >> i've heard it's about 6 months of paperwork with the faa to use a drone for commercial purposes. >> oh, one other thing too -- a couple of important things is that the faa rules -- talk about drones but they actually apply
9:33 am
old time gliders, old time model airplanes even the old stick and tissue if they're radio-controlled you have to have an faa registration. and if you don't register at the faa they have fines from 11,000 to $27,000. >> tom: oh, yeah, you don't want to deal with that. >> if your 12-year-old flies your 1-pound drone in your backyard at 4.9 miles away from an airport under the knees in the background you could be hit to 11,000 to $27,000 fine. >> tom: kevin with the orlando robotics club we'll see you guys january 23rd it's a saturday, 2:00 pm, wt bland public library in mount dora. >> yes, sir. >> tom: thank you for eplightening us. happy flying. so coming up on "good day" eat your way to better health. a local doctor breaking down the

9:35 am
little bite, plain yogurt and it's funny if yogurt and dairy a probiotic tablet. >> tom: what -- what nutrients it will talking about that is important to help boost your immune system. >> we always hear when you're sick load yourself up with vitamin c the number 1 mistake people run to the refrigerator for orange juice which is full of sugar and when juices are processed we lose some of the potency of the vitamin c so one of the most healthiest thing you can do is actually a pink or a red grapefruit. >> tom: hmmm! >> it's chock-full of vitamin c. >> tom: i don't like grapefruit. >> you don't like fruit. then pick up the orange or tanning lows. >> tom: now i'm back in. >> the other key nutrient is a cup of spinach cooked. what people don't realize that's 6 ounce package of fresh spinach cooking it down to 1 cup is not only rich in vitamin c more than citrus fruit but also folic acid. >> tom: cooking down we're told
9:36 am
>> correct. the only thing on this table is you want to cook the spinach it's more potent in cooking it out. one of the my favorites is watermelon which is not is rich in lycopenes which is also very potent to boost your immune system. >> tom: okay. >> another one rich in zinc is mushrooms. >> tom: all times of mushrooms? >> yes. >> tom: and you want to cook those. >> you want to cook those. >> tom: that's where you'll get the most effect of it. >> absolutely. last but not least -- >> tom: here we go to the garlic. just let me tell the secret here before we start talking about the garlic, dr. romie has been trying to convince me to eat some of this garlic raw all day. now, tell everybody why. >> and this is why. raw garlic is rich in a nutrient called allison. the minute you start feeling your throat getting scratchy or you're getting a cough or cold this is more potent than the vitamin c the folic acid --
9:37 am
cold dive in. >> dive in. take it hole. here's the trick so you're notofending everybody around you bad breath. you're going to take a clove of garlic like it's a pill and it's a hole. i'll take one for the team here. >> tom: that's what i was going to say not only is it rich in the nutrients it's rich in stank breath. almost got you. [laughing] >> tom: this is great advice, dr. romie. it is -- >> always a pleasure. >> tom: i didn't mean to do that right when you were drinking something. all right. so let's talk about the weather now because there's some things you need to know about, hey, brooks. >> meteorologist: good morning, great information, dr. romie good morning everybody i hope you're having a good saturday morning. we're still dealing with some dense fog especially right around orlando. the red, less than a quarter mile visibility. we have that in seminole, orange, southern lake and far northern osceola counties. everywhere else we're starting to see improving conditions with the fogs finally starting to break up and lift and that's good news.
