8:00 am
. hello, amy. hello, john. did you know it's national clear off your desk day? and we're doing it with our friends at the container store on the 8:00 hour of "good day orlando." >> that always worries me. the last time i was told to clean out my desk, it was not a day to celebrate. all i got was a box. >> you were told to clean out your desk, it's just a good idea to self motivate. >> right. and it just makes you feel better. >> it does. unless of course it's that. >> unless it's get your stuff and get. >> did y'all notice the cold front yet when it came through yesterday? >> absolutely. >> pretty impressive stuff. and the winds really started to blow.
8:01 am
we're seeing a lot of sun. that's good news. we'll see plentiful sunshine as we go through the next few days and also plentiful good star dazeing at night. if you're a back yard amateur astronomer like myself, i think you'll enjoy some of the star gazing we have. 44 in orlando, 46 in melbourne, brevard. look at gainesville, 33 degrees. as a matter of fact, alatch wu, marion, there's a freeze watch for tonight. and i think if gainesville's at 33 right now, bet your bottom dollar you'll be below freezing as we go into the overnight hours. with the wind, feels like 40 in orlando. same thing in melbourne, brevard. it'slly outside. there's the freeze watch right now. we'll see if we get more counties through the day. we stop out today, upper 50s and low 60s. 62 degrees officially in orlando, but those north winds continue to bring in cool, dry air. seven day forecast is coming up.
8:02 am
for now, let's get a check on traffic. i have a couple new crosses to tell you about. the 4 -8 westbound, causing quite a bit of backup, significant delays in that area. use caution if you are using the 408 right now. taking a look at this other new crash, silver star at hiawatha, starting to cause some delays on silver star, but not too significant. use caution if you're in that area. i want to give you a live look. this is i-4 at 346 exit. no crash combfrm, but significant delays and congestion there on i-4 westbound. again, use caution if you are on that roadway this morning. i-4 westbound from lake mary to colonial, 26 minutes. i-4 eastbound from the attractions to downtown, 24 minutes. and 408 to downtown will take you 17 minutes. that's it for your traffic. back to you guys. all new this morning, police make an arrest for the shooting death of two men outside of a night club.
8:03 am
is being held without bond and charged with two counts of first degree murder. authorities say this happened right outside a club on pearl street, near bethane cookman university in daytona beach. three men were involved in a fight outside that club when shots were fired. two men were killed, another injured. an arrest warrant was issued for mayo, also facing two counts of first degree murder. mayo is still on the run. the world now reacting to the death of bowie. >> most notable of all the tweets, maybe germany thanking bowie for his part in bringing down the wall, and the list goes on and on, talking about the impact david bowie had in their

some people started a memorial outside of his new york city apartment. a family spokesman said the singer was surrounded by his family as he passed away sunday, after an 18 -month battle with cancer. he's kept a low profile in recent years. it's been widely known only amongst his friends that he's been struggling with cancer. his last performance in orlando, you'd have to go all the way back to 1990. breaking news in chicago right now. firefighters battling a massive apartment fire. these are live pictures coming up. this fire broke out around 6:00 a.m. at the four story apartment complex. one firefighter was injured when stairwell collapsed. no word on the extent of his injuries or what sparked that fire. a brevard county woman accused of driving drunk with

8:09 am
. welcome back. 810:00 right now. now at 8:00, it's accepted that stress is part of being an adult, but a shocking new report shows that kids are getting stressed out, so much so that it's making them physically ill. doctors are increasingly sewing children as young as five suffering from migraines and ulcers. nearly one in three teenagers,
8:10 am
also telling the american psychological association that stress made them sad or depressed. 94 % of college counselors said last year, they were seeing rising numbers of students with severe psychological problems. physicals say it mostly stems from the growing pressure to perform well in school, both from parents and from educators. so what can we do to make sure that our kids don't burn out, but still try to get good grades? joining us this morning to talk more about it is a clinical psychologist. >> we hear this and we automatically panic. we think we're overwhelming our kids. and we think about the standards that they are expected to meet these days, and we truly are pushing them to do more, be more, all the time. >> 100 % true, and we're starting to see the side effects of that. so i know i'm here to talk about how we can help them deal with
8:11 am
stress, and i think we need to send a message that all the pressure for the schools to do better, the teachers to do better. i don't think no child left behind was supposed to be no peace. so we really start thinking about how unrealistic our expectations are becoming. they're earning college credit in high school, getting high school credit in middle school. i don't really know what's next. this is something we talk about in my house. it's just getting more and more of a pressure cooker and less time to just enjoy your childhood. ten? >> right, absolutely. academics. we're pushing them on the orbitae side, in athletics. they start playing football when they're three now. what we're doing is almost insane. >> it is insane, and we're taking them to be supercompetitive and so much on future. you have to do this now so you can get this later than. it's our own anxiety about what
8:12 am
they they'll, what they achieve, so much pressure and pressure in the school system and we need our leaders to help us chill out. it's too much. when you look at the homework, high school kids are not getting enough sleep. and so when children are stressed and they're anxiety, they don't perform as well. so by putting all this pressure on them, we're actually doing the opposite of what we want to do is just to see them succeed >> so what are some of the signs, stacey, we need to be looking for in our children that says that either we or educators are putting too much pressure? >> children don't always, especially younger ages, know the word stress or i'm anxiety. unfortunately, more and more do because they hear their parents talking about their anxiety and stress all the time, too, but we have to look for signs that are things like changes in behaviors, a pretty mellow kid suddenly becomes ivoritable and moody, a pretty connected kid becomes withdrawn, they lose interest in things that they really used to be excited about or sometimes it really becomes a physical experience, like
8:13 am
headaches, feeling nauseous, saying they don't want to go to school for vague, physical complaints that you can't find any medical reason for. >> so but there's a balance. because you don't want to back off too much because they do still have to do well in school. >> right. so stress serves a purpose because good stress can motivate us. we want to study, do our best, bring your a game. but when it gets to be too high a level or too chronic, it never lets up. that's when we know cognitively, it's not to your benefit to have that level of stress. so motivation is good so low levels of stress. we also want kids to lumber how to cope with stress. we don't want them to be so protected and we don't let them have any stressors and they get to college and that's when -- we're seeing so much. i can't tell you how many students are taking anti-anxiety medications because that's what people do. oh, my child is stressed. i don't want you to suffer, so take medication.
8:14 am
what's causing that stress? let's have reasonable expectations and preserve what childhood is really about, becoming who you are, not just achieving, what you can do. >> and certainly not just medicating it. >> certainly not just trying to make it go away. >> dr. stacey dunn, thank you so much. we appreciate your time. let's send it over to john. new video from australia, toxic black smoke can be seen rising into the skies over melbourne. the fire started earlier today in a pile of tires. firefighters have contained the blaze, but they're telling people in that area to stay inside and shut their windows because some of that smoke is toxic. they say the public should be fine if they're not too close to it. they don't know how this all started. also, take a look at this, crews working to restore power to coral, florida, after a tornado hit the area. they say the number in damages
8:15 am
will go up, towards $10 million after the downed power lines are counted. it's still unknown whether florida will need federal dollars to recover. no deaths, but three people got minor injuries. governor rick scott is crediting smart phones for saving lives and said this could have been a lot worse had it not been for technology. much cooler conditions. jacksonville, florida, checked in at 31 degrees. that's the first time jacksonville has been below freezing since february of 2015. tonight, we have a freeze watch in effect for alatch wuand marion counties. i think that freeze watch might be extended a little further south as we go through the day. right now, glorious sunshine as you look outside from our camera, folks. it's going to be a sunny day. as a matter of fact, lots of sun. low humidity for the next few days. that's going to be nice. that cold front came through, cooled us down dramatically. look a at these temperature
8:16 am
in alatchia, 28 degrees cooler right now than this time yesterday in gainesville. so a very strong cold front. it is early, mid-january so the coldest air of the season still powers into the lower 48. temperature wise, here we are in the 40s right now, for the most part in the 30s northwest of town. headlines, let's get you through the week. cool weather lasts at least through wednesday, probably thursday. we'll end ophth week, warm, wet and windy as the weather system comes out of the gulf of mexico. and right now, next monday, martin luther king, jr. birthday, a big holiday for a lot of people, could be frigid. we'll keep an eye on that forecast as we go through the week. outside right now, clear skies from our amway camera, 44 degrees. and then we do have the north wind, continuing to come into central florida. you take the wind, take the temperatures in the 30s and 40s, and you combine them and get the wind chills. so what it feels like when you walk outside. man, it feels cold.

8:22 am
staying organized around the office. >> we need somebody to come into the newsroom and help us out. david martin is joining us live from the container store. >> there's a can of tuna in my desk drawer at amy contests. >> they need to be hidden somewhere. >> that's why i pulled this segment for you guys. my friend jewels from the container store, let's get right to it. the idea is people listening and watching, i got a home office or an office at work that's a mess. you approach your desk. what's the the first thing we should do? >> the new year is a great time to get organized. we start with the desk. desks tend to have a pile of mess on it. the first thing you want to do is clear the clutter. you want to look at the items on your desk and ask three things. >> three things. >> three things. does it need to be here? does it help me be productive?
8:23 am
else in the office to get it off the desk? the happier desk is prime reasonable degree of certaintyt so you really, i can't emphasize enough how you want to keep it clean so you can stay productive while you're there. the next thing you want to do is categorize everything, have things in reach that you use on a daily basis, either on a shelf or in a drawer here. >> this is cute, this caddy here. you've got this on wheels so it's mobile. >> the great thing about having a rolling file cart is you can bring your files to you where you want to use them. it'll fit under a desk, under a table, or you can even put it away in a closet. and you have all of your spies, a couple drawers here for your supplies and your files. >> and you also mentioned go vertical. >> go vertical. we always -- that's kind of our mantra here at the container store. there's always a space on a wall or behind a door to create an organized space to keep you. >> and believe it, the container thing sells things for anywhere
8:24 am
on your walls or behind the door. if you have a problem, they'll fix it for you. service. we can design a beautiful space for you. >> they'll come to the house and do it. phones, chargers, gadgets, so many in our lives. you have toys i want to show off here. this is cool, it's like a charging box. >> under your desk, there's always a lot of cords. under our television, so this box, this particular box comes with charger. >> a strip in the middle. and you put the lid on it after you put your chargers in there so it becomes kind of a decorative piece, you put things on it. >> we're gonna create a little charging station here out of this. you plug that in, have your cords come out here, and you can charge on top. we also have. >> but don't be fooled. >> we also have these wonderful, i'm gonna push these over here, these wonderful cable dots that
8:25 am
desk or even on a night stand. >> prevents them from falling down. >> so they don't fall behind. all kind of fun gadgets to keep you organized, especially in this electronic world. >> by the way, the goal with the sale right now, you have an alpha sale. >> 30 % off through february 15th. >> and alpha is the desk line series you have here. >> absolutely. we love the design. >> now, that's just your physical space. what do you do with all the paperwork we get every day, every hour, really? jewels will be back in the 9:00 hour to help us organize that. thank you very much. >> thanks, david. >> no, there's too much there. i go in there and i want everything. still to come, one local city is putting eyes to the skies to track coyotes. >> yeah, this is differentfelt we'll tell you how they're using trephines to try to protect your pets from these wild animals. drones to try to protect your

. >> welcome back. we're listening to david bowie music all morning here, after finding out the legendary rocker died last night at the age of 69. he's been battling cancer but hasn't told very many people about it, so not a lot of people knew. glad you're with us this morning. >> i'm john. let's check in with brooks, find out what's going on with your forecast. the first thing you should know, it's cold.
8:28 am
right now than when we came into the building at 3:00 a.m. still around 51. now, 44 degrees in orlando, spherex in melbourne brevard, 33 in alachua, and the winds blowing out of the north are wind chills continue at this hour in the 30s to low 40s. it's going to be a cold day by central florida standards. high temperatures only in the upper 50s to low 60s. we'll have a lot of sunshine, but also the north winds bringing in some of the coldest air of the year. seven day forecast is coming up. stay warm. here's traffic. hi, there. happy monday. here's a live look from sky fox. this is on john young parkway south. we have a crash blocking two left lanes, just past obt causing significant delays that the area. use caution if you're taking that road this morning. this is a new crash on colonial at econtrow causing significant delays, both directions on colonial there. again, use caution if you are in that area, as well. i want to bring you back down here, still partially blocked there.
8:29 am
you can see causing significant delays there in both directions, as well. taking a look at your drive times, i-4 westbound looking good. 24 minutes right now, i-4 eastbound from the atracks to downtown, taking you 23 minutes right now. on the four oh eight from the 417, that will take eye 17 minutes right now. that's it for your traffic. back to you guys. thank you. the city of indian harbor beach is going high tech in the search for coyotes. >> a trapper will start using drones today to try to capture these animals. dana has more on the plan and the purpose behind it. >> we're in gleeson park and a few weeks ago a family that lives nearby caught a coyote on camera attacking its cat. now, this team that you see behind me, they're going to try and track that coyote down using different cameras. injury going to try and use cameras on drones.
8:30 am
cross and his team are hoping to use trail cameras, as well as drones to try to spot coyotes in the woods here at the park. the hope is that the cameras will help the trackers learn about the routes that the coyotes are taking through the trees and they can settle traps accordingly and the drones might make it easier for the trappers to spot where the animals are building dens. the idea here is to get a bird's eye view instead of trucking through the woods in order to capture the coyotes a little bit quicker. >> we see any big dug out holes, because they like the make their dens inside. so that's a pretty clear sign. they'll be in there. >> and so right now, the drone that's up right now is testing the wind to make sure that the bigger drone with the better camera can go up over the woods and start looking for signs of the cioath in the tracks there. fwc says coyotes are getting
8:31 am
more and more common and more and more of a nuisance. there are coyotes now in every county in the state of florida, according to officials. reporting live in brevard, i'm dana jay, fox 35 news. >> dana, thank you. the humane society of the u.s. is helping some animals that are going to be displaced during dangerous floods in mississippi. >> yeah, they're sending over 100 dogs and cats to florida to find them forever homes. officials took 105 dogs and three cats from the shelter area in an area in mississippi that is expected to flood. heavy rain is causing the flooding there, especially in 70s down stream on the mississippi river. shelters all over florida are taking in the animals, including one in marion county. >> we're taking animals that are highly adoptable, somewhere where other groups can get them adopted out, leaving the people in desperate need for their animals to go somewhere in a time of natural disaster to be able to go to that place and stay locally.
8:32 am
also happening today, orlando mayor buddy dyer will be sworn in for his 4th full term. >> the oath of office is set for 3:00 this afternoon. first, andrea is joining us live, outside city hall this morning to talk to the mayor about his vision for the future. >> hey, good morning to you, amy and john. we're here on the steps of city hall. it's like a movie and i'm standing here with mayor buddy dyer. >> good morning. i'm great, excited. today's the 5th time i've been sworn in as mayor of orlando. i'm just as passionate today as i was the first day i was sworn in and i'm probably a lot better prepared than the first time. >> do you think? what are you thinking about today? this is the 5th round for you. as you look back on your career as mayor of this city, what stands out to you the most? >> i'm so proud of the citizenships of this city and how we've progressed in the last 13 years. i was thinking about it just this morning, about when i was first sworn in and how different
8:33 am
things are today, how inclusive we are, how we celebrate diversity, this morning about this just january 6th of last year, i performed about 45 gay marriages right here on the steps of city hall. so i feel like we've got so much momentum that there's not anything we can't achieve as a city, as a community, if we partner and collaborate and work together. >> and i have to say this, in the two years that i've covered some of the news here in orlando and events involving you, dr. phillips, orlando city soccer, the new citrus bowl, sun rail, all of these things come to mind. what do you have planned? how do you top that? you've done so much already. >> it's not about topping anything. it's more about continuing what we have going because we need to finish the dr. phillips center. there's still another theater. we need to extend sun rail from sand lake pro to kissimmee and eventually to the airport. we need to finish the soccer stadium, our sports and snachlt
8:34 am
district, our creative village is another thing that we certainly have started but not finished. and then probably most compelling of all is ending chronic homelessness here in the city of orlando. and we have reached functional zero for our veterans so that was a huge push in initiative. and think about last august, about 600 volunteers came out in what we call the surge to help identify and find all the homeless veterans that were remaining on our streets. so we can do big things and we can do the compassionate things. there's not anything we can't achieve. >> and the most hard hitting question for you, mayor. what are you wearing? >> hmmm. >> what are you wearing to the big ceremony this afternoon. >> well, blue and green are kind tie. it'll be mostly blue and green. and hopefully it's going to warm up a little bit. we're gonna have the ceremony and i'll invite everybody out that wants to come out at 3:00 today at the dr. phillips center
