8:01 am
i'll wear my wet suit all weekend. if i get wet, hey, that's cool. >> john: you know, we can hear the rain, right now. up in seminole county it is coming down. >> jayme: pouring. radar is active. and weather wasting no time and we'll update the folks at home, the update, 8 o'clock, 8:01. you are watching "good day orlando" on fox 35. skies now starting to thicken with the clouds. and they are getting dark and lowering, rain chances are rising. let's come back to the computer, see what is doing. tracking the line now, squally weather making an approach toward the area. transpiring north of atlanta, look at the heavy snow, raleigh, charlotte, now picking up snow and has been the morning hours. and as far north of -- just south of indy and cincinnati, ohio, an active scene, south of that, all the active weather playing out and it, appears as we go through the next couple hours the secondary line, peeling through the spur of the panhandle will blast through
8:02 am
to that and we find heavy rains establishing seminole county and west of -- southwestern volusia county and the i-4 corridor and ocala, heads up. you have dumping rainfall just to your south, i've received a few reports out of dunnellon on the southwest side of marion county and citrus and leavey. so you know, the radar is is not showing it but it is pouring here and again the dumping rain, this appendage of rain, which is exhibiting rotation, a half-hour ago and one thing that concerns me, as the mainline gets a little more punchy and moves our way by mid and late this morning, when we could be dealing with strong storms traversing the peninsula. i'm watching that. your temperature trends have been not moving a lot. we have seen movement in brevard county, nearly 70 at melbourne compared to low end 60s, if not a few mid and upper 50s across central florida, the day plays out like this: increasing rain chances and
8:03 am
by 2:00 and 67 by 5:00. but 5:00, a lot of you may be a lot cooler, by tomorrow the great equalizer, a blast of arctic cold. slides done the gut of the state and chills us out with tremendous winds on top of that. we'll talk about that in the full forecast straight ahead in a bit. here's gina. >> gina: happy friday. we're still dealing with that crash on i-4 eastbound, at ee williams and is clearing up. but as jayme said it is getting wet. wet on the roads. use caution. a lot of backup on i-4 eastbound past 434. if you want to avoid the mess, i suggest getting off at the altamonte exit. i do have a couple of crashes to tell you about, the first one here, on the 429 at the 438, causing significant delays there. and just use caution if you are in that area this morning and i want to bring you back to the earlier accident. at curry ford and goldenrod, and not as significant delays as before but we are dealing with a -- quite a mess.
8:04 am
out on those roads. i-4 westbound is slow, compared to colonial and will take you 23 minutes, and i-4 eastbound from the attractions to downtown, 18 minutes and, the 408 looking okay. and the 417 to downtown, 13 minutes. right now, and that's it for live drive traffic. back to you. >> gina, thank you. a look outside. near the attractions. here's central florida. things are beautiful. >> john: not bad, we -- there goes the rocket. you see it go across and, yeah, why we live here, right? attractions, theme parks going on now, lots of construction. lots of green out there. up north, all white now. charlotte, north carolina, getting hit by a blizzard and the rest of the northeast going to get hit. a big press conference now talking about how they'll handle twro to three feet of snow. the federal government is going to close their offices from washington, d.c. at noon. states of emergency have been declared in five states that in district of columbia. schools and government offices closing early. thousands of flights are already
8:05 am
right here in central florida. fox 35's dana jay has the story this morning. >> things are not looking bad here yet. in fact look at the big board. lots of on-time flights. a few that are cancelled. or delayed. those are in coming flights from the raleigh-durham area. in the heart of the storm area. other cancellations we're seeing on the board now, flights to and from charlotte. and that shouldn't come as a huge surprise. american airlines did announce yesterday that it is cancelling charlotte today. weather. they are -- incoming weather and are expected to pick up flights again as usual on saturday. and social media, united announcing around 4:00 p.m. they'll begin to suspend flights at dulles airport. a hub in washington, d.c. really, all of the major airlines have issued waivers for the weekend, which means that you can rebook without a penalty
8:06 am
that storm. and the good news, here, folks, you should know that your flights are cancelled ahead of time. that way you don't have to come to the airport and wait around. that is really the goal of the airlines in this situation as they see the big storm coming. i checked it out, there is a flight tracking web site, 2,000 flights already cancelled for today. another 3,000 flights cancelled tomorrow. reporting at oia, dana jay, fox 35 news. >> john: keep it here on fox 35, for continuing coverage of the big storm all weekend long. and you certainly want to be near the tv around noon today when the big storms hit us. we'll have the latest on the rain ahead, of course and you can get your updates any time at www.fox35orlando.com. >> 8:06, developing right now, a driver has been arrested after investigators say he crashed into a trooper's vehicle overnight. ryan elijah joins us live with the latest. good morning. >> ryan: good morning, we have been following the story all
8:07 am
2:30 a.m. on sand lake road near i-4 in orange county and troopers arresting 29-year-old juan torres of ocoee, here's his mug shot, facing dui charges, new video from the scene and appears the car landed in the back of the trooper's suv and no word on any injuries. there was a -- we can tell you, we'll continue to track it and he's held this morning. a shooting last night near ucf at the marquis apartments on sterling university lane across the street from ucf's campus. deputies say a 19-year-olds has nonlife-threatening injuries and no arrests announced. a maitland man disappeared during a hiking trip in colorado. officials are searching for the 58-year-old ronald weber, missing since tuesday waent hiking in the rock -- and apparently went hiking in the rocky mountain national park. but he was not prepared to spend issues. high winds and bitterly cold day on tuesday. certainly they are hoping for the best. john?
8:08 am
how often do you wash your winter gear? >> luanne: pretty much never, right? we don't wear it in florida but you might need it this weekend.
8:09 am
coats and scarves could be >> john: a tale of two cities. the best of times, the worst of times, jayme king. i don't know, i'm making stuff up as i go along. sure, hey, on your left hand side, that is downtown orlando. and, we want to compare with what you are seeing in raleigh. north carolina. right now. you can see the snow already starting to hit there. there is going to be a lot more on the ground before this is all said and done and we'll get to severe storms here, potentially and around noon time, watch very, very closely. luanne? >> luanne: thank you. in our health watch, a lot of you busted out your winter jackets, scarves and gloves because it is cold outside but the items could be loaded with germs and the germs could be making you and the people around you sick. the doctor, a physician with orlando health is here to explain. good to see you! >> good morning. >> luanne: we don't wear the stuff very often. i don't think i busted out my real winter jacket in years. but it is in the closet and could be covered with nastiness, right.
8:10 am
wash it, especially in central florida we don't put it on too often. and when it is cold we put it on and back into the drawers. overall it harbors a lot of bugs and viruss stay on them for days or even weeks. 75 million americans will go see the doctor because of the common cold which costs the health care system $7 billion a year. anything we can do to prevent that we should do and the easy thing is to wash these things. >> luanne: don't shove 'em in the closet when you're done after a couple of days. it will be interesting, you brought in a black light to show us how many germs can be on our winter gear. >> what we do is, when we have the sniffles we cough into them. and what happens is, you come and shake my hand, hi, luanne. >> luanne: and you give me your germs. >> what you don't notice, what i've done is you see all of the bugs here. and then you actually notice on your hand, the bugs have gone
8:11 am
and all of these bugs, what you are doing is taking from one step to the next step and this next person. >> luanne: and touch your face -- >> what your kids are bringing home from school. >> luanne: daycare and school. >> and everywhere. the bugs are everywhere around your clothes and it is very disgusting. >> luanne: it really is disturbing. break it down. how often should we wash things like sweaters and jackets, our mittens and hats. >> at least once a week. and the other thing to remember, if you have leather gloves, dry clean them and, you know, the cost of that may limit you from actually washing them. try and get cotton gloves and wash them once a week and the sweaters and that will prevent the bugs from staying there. norovirus and rhino virus can stay up to 2 to 4 weeks and the other thing we forget to do is -- we put them in the pockets and the damp temperature lets the bugs stay longer.
8:12 am
>> absolutely. the other thing you can do, obviously wash them, and wash your hands as well. you have to wash them and get hand sanitizer. using soap, wash at least 20 seconds, count happy birthday twice and, thing it happy birthday and it should be enough time to get the bugs out of your hands. >> luanne: great advice. doctor, thank you so much for coming in. >> stay warm! serving we'll try. over to jayme king, will we stay warm this weekend, jayme? >> jayme: that's up to you. i hope you have winter clothes because by tomorrow highs only in the low and mid 50s and it is -- do we get there-type scenario. very gusty winds on the back edge of this very prolific storm system and historical nature in regard to the snowfall now moving into the eastern side of the nation. everybody is getting clobbered north of atlanta now with rain and snow-mix and slush and sleet. we have a little of everything, going south of the snow line we
8:13 am
possible strong to severe weather getting in here as the hours tick by. i want to do radar analysis for you now and take you to the areas experiencing heavy rainfall and this is the first bout of rain moving through. look out west of the state you can see the aggressive looking squall line materializing and between the secondary line and first punch moving through we have a lot of what we call modified marine air, all the ingredients and dynamics are playing out ahead of the main squall line in that area of dynamics or energy will begin to shift into the peninsula, where we raise the storm risk of seeing those storms and stronger to even slightly less severe category, and that is winds in excess of 58 miles per hour, damaging straight-line winds and isolated tornadoes and of course the prolific rain and i think a lot of lightning will play out here as we head through the coming hours. take you down to ocala, again, show you what is playing out in marion county as we show you the heavy rain, down bellview and
8:14 am
river, super-duper heavy and toward the beaches of flagler county, palm coast and hammock beach and i-95 and flagler with light rain and gets a lot heavier toward alexander springs and deltona. a lot of the area to the west of the i-4 corridor. i'll broadently the picture and toward the theme parks we continue with a couple of cells now, just kind of meandering about with theiest surge approaching areas north of tampa, towards citrus and levy county and dunnellon, a cell south of town could play out as a heavy rain maker. the modeling showing us what will play out and the squall line is racing through. through the lunch time hour. pretty heavy hitters, right from here and concern lies as it begins to exit coastal brevard. the modeling telling us that there may be a very, very distinct straight-line wind threat like we had last sunday morning with the squall moving
8:15 am
factors outside of that warmth of the atlantic ocean right now, that could get a little dicey in that area but you see the front waiting in the wings out to the west and will drive through, bodily through tonight and will drop the temperatures, some of this coldest air we have seen in sometime around these parts. and the winds on top of that, by tomorrow, highs, orlando metro to the low and mid 50s and bring a wind in at 25-30, look out, it will be a chilly day, and those in ohio and upper midwest, that is a fall day, but around here especially chilly. not chilly this morning, actually warmer than we have been, 68 at melbourne compared to 50s and low end 60s elsewhere. the theme of today, increasing rain chance and we have established that and clouds thick with decrease in rain chance by 4:00 or 5:00 this afternoon. again, strong storms and the possibility now of a few actually going severe. shifting gears, you are getting a little. y moving and grooving and want
8:16 am
i want to feature and highlight our area golf scene and it will be a wet one with cloud-to-ground lightning. the last place you want to be is the boat or golf scene. your forecast again, showing the accumulating snow mid-atlantic and northeast and new england states and punch of cold air sends high temperatures by tomorrow, down again into the low and mid 50s, i wouldn't be shocked to see watches or warnings from metro orlando as soon as sunday morning. keep it here and i'll update you. here's gina with traffic. >> gina: happy friday. i'll give you a live look. another crash, this is i-95 at the i-4 exit. the camera frozen. use caution if you are out there. causing a nasty delay there. did overnight and the early morning hours. this new crash on the 429. southbound at 438. causing significant delays in that area. i want to bring you back to the other crash on curry ford road and goldenrod causing significant delays there.
8:17 am
caution out on the roadways, lots of crashes out there. and those roads getting slick. i-4 westbound, looking okay. lake mary to colonial, 21 minutes and i-4 eastbound from the attractions to downtown, 16 minds and 408 from 417 takes you 13 minutes. right now, time for your pump patrol, saving money, regular gas $1.65, murphy u.s.a. on metro west boulevard and metropolis way in orlando. you can always check out gas saving tips on our web site, go to www.fox35orlando.com and click on traffic. >> luanne: thank you, the manatee festival is this weekend in volusia county. >> john: david martin has a preview, live at blue springs state park. there is also stuff going on at valentine park. explain. >> reporter: good morning, john, hi, luanne. it is the manatee festival, the 31st. i can't believe it, 31 years they've been doing this. we're here this morning, though, at blue springs state park,

8:26 am
like we have modifications to the air mass now, that is playing out over the gulf of mexico. one of which could support an outbreak of strong storms. north of that it is about the huge mushroom shaped canopy of heavy, dense snows falling over portions of the southern midwest and eastbound for charlotte, raleigh north carolina and some of the areas around the outer banks experiencing a rain-snow mix and again, what you see is what you get now and, over here and navigate this weather radar. because we have a lot popping at this time. we'll use our fast tracker guardian to update you on that. the latest imagery, now out of the fox 35 weather center and what we are finding now is that a lot of the heavy rain is slowly beginning to get established and also, notice what is happening across far south florida, fort myers, an aggressive thunderstorm cell moving in with the possibility of a tornado warning popping down across port charlotte within the moment's notice, i'm waiting for word from the weather service on that but you can see the heavy rainfall
8:27 am
metro with a little lighter and not phasing in just yet but much of marion county now, is smothered and covered with extremely heavy rain and back out southwest of that, dunnellon had i few moments of heavy rain and the villages and wildwood and bushnell. looks like rains trying to get established there. so bottom line is, the line of weather is going to race through here as you see it through the lunch time hour, the second line now over the east and northeastern gulf of mexico and will exit coastal brevard by about 3:00. colder. a look at the 7-day forecast, smoke us how that will take shape tomorrow. 55, a great feat to accomplish tomorrow with a lot of wind on top. getting cold, you heard it here first and we'll update you throughout the morning hours. >> gina: happy friday. i want to give you a live look. i-4 eastbound, just before the longwood exit. i am getting word of a crash, quite a bit of backup there.
8:28 am
i want to tell you about a new accident, down in osceola county, kissimmee area on boggy creek. causing minor delays in one lane, nothing too extreme. no word of roadblock but use caution if you are out there. another crash on the 42 and 438, causing significant delays at that intersection. use caution if you are out there this morning, looking now at your drive times, everything, starting to look a little better on i-4 westbound, lake mary to colonial, 18 minutes and i-4 eastbound is slow and attractions to downtown will take you 18 minutes and the 408 from the 417 to downtown, will take you about 16 minutes, right now, that's it for live traffic. back to you. >> john: 8:34. developing in brevard county, this morning, two people are in custody, after investigators say they robbed the house and led police on a chase that ended at the brevard county zoo. >> luanne: dana jay is live at the house in rockledge where the
