8:04 am
they measured it at 22 inches. at reagan national, it was 17.8 inches, obviously a pretty decent discrepancy there. so that 17.8 inches is the official snowfall total, which makes it the fourth biggest on record, but what's interesting is that overnight a story broke that they had an issue with the weather instrumentation at reagan and lost track of it in the middle of the blizzard so they think they actually got more snow than the 17.8 inches but we will never know. so we don't know if we have an even bigger record than what we have right now. >> amy: you don't want to go in one of the big snowdrifts and measure it for me? >> reporter: it's do that in the next blizzard. >> amy: thanks, joel. try to stay warm out there. fox 35 is your source for continuing coverage and the cold temperatures not only here but up in the frigid north.

parking lot. about 20, 25 teachers were there holding signs, asking people to honk if they care about education. and then they marched down the sidewalk and into school. it was that quick. we talked to the volucia teacher's organization president andrew spar and asked what the message is they want to get out with this. >> we really want the school board to reorganize their priorities. right now they're not focused on the things that matter most, which are kids and making sure we have teachers in the classrooms. >> reporter: and these teachers will be out every day this week. they say they're at almost every single school in volucia county. and they're asking people to come out and support them if you want to do that. they're going to start at 7:05 at volucia county high school, 7:20 at elementary schools, the exception being plus one elementary schools where they'll start at 7:30. and then 8:05 at middle schools. it's every day this week and almost every school in volucia county.

fox 35 news. >> john: morgan and morgan commercial right there at the end, never fails. 8:07. homeless people are camped outside the building. luanne is in studio with more on that story. >> reporter: this started when the city shutdown man idea island park for maintenance which is where most of it will home last people sleep. that is when many of them set up camp outside the administration building. friday morning the volucia county property appraiser said a homeless man was aggressive towards a woman who works in his office. that woman was scrambling to find her key to get in the building when a homeless man rushed up to her. another employee saw what was going on, and shouted out. >> he was so close at the time he heard her screaming, that he turned around and when he turned around he bumped her, so there was contact. and that's not a circumstance
8:08 am
work. >> reporter: the property appraiser has now given his employees the week off until he can figure out if he wants to reopen his office there in that building or not. both the city of daytona and volucia county have been at odds about exactly how to deal with the homeless problem. on thursday, the county tried to reopen man idea island park but the city closed it back down just a short time later. >> amy: thanks. the crime alert we're expected to learn the name of a woman shot and killed inside of a bar in sanford. this happened just before midnight saturday at the cool breeze bar. james pritchard was arrested in that case. he is now facing a charge of second-degree murder, as well as shooting into a building. he will face a judge later this afternoon. friends and family held a small vigil to remember the

8:12 am
and again, it's going to be a -- to go to the super bowl this year. >> amy: ryan is checking out the ticket prices. he is here in the studio with more of that. >> reporter: there is a complaint that they priced out thee it's a corporate event. we looked at the average ticket prices, now near $6,000. cheapest price i found, for 3800, you're barely in the stadium, but $3,800. you go down, even to get close to the field you're at $10,000. cheap, most expensive seats $26,000 sitting on the 50-yard line right behind the bronco bench. $50,000. and you go around, it is hugely that's for one ticket. you also got to remember you're going to a place where there are 35,000 hotel rooms, there were 100,000 in new york. demand is much greater as well. when you go to the super bowl there is a three or four night minimum. it is a once in a lifetime, but
8:13 am
i think for two reasons. >> john: once in a lifetime? >> reporter: it's california, and peyton manning and you got a recipe for expensive. >> amy: i would much rather watch it from home. everything is right there, the bathroom, and the commercials. >> john: you won't have snoop dogg. maybe you do. >> amy: maybe you do. >> john: i'm holding out until the citrus bowl gets the super bowl then i'll stand out. >> reporter: and then we can rent our homes out, too. why not? >> john: jayme has your accuweather forecast, and this is -- it could be very chilly up north for super bowl time. >> jayme: and even in coastal california it's going to be interesting to see how the weather plays out. el nino at work here. 30s, 20s, still in place at ocala and 40s as you work southbound out of that. but bushnell continues now, sumter county with a freeze warning.
8:14 am
you get into the frost advise going strong around the tampa metro, through the four corners area. not to say you won't have frost right now. temperatures now well above and up and out of the 30s, so we're starting to mitigate the threat of it. cold start, nice and warmer afternoon, and i'll tell you in compare and contrast mode, compared to saturday, wasn't that silly? we had a wind-chill factor all day, which is a rare bird around these parts. normally we get it for the morning and by noon we're taking everything off, and let's go out to the beaches. it was not the case saturday. the high is going east, and a lot of the weather making over the high plains to come in here. that's going to spin up a low pressure center over the gulf by around midweek. wednesday into thursday rain chances respond upwards. tomorrow we see shifting winds. i wouldn't be shocked late in

8:21 am
so i packed two cases of oil in the trunk. everything was going fine. i suffered several breakdowns on the way, though. the most strenuous part of the journey was between bowling green and chattanooga where i experienced the rolling hills of kentucky and tennessee. now, my car again 1976 mustang two, four cylinder, a french word meaning not much power. i was having a hard time getting up and over the hills that were ever increasing. and i kind of slowed down basically my speed would get down to maybe 20 miles an hour and i would just barely be able to eek over the hills. i discovered the technique, called drafting. if you get behind a truck, there is air that can suck you in. this is my ticket to florida. so the only thing was i had to match the speed of the truck in order to get behind them to get the draft. but, it was a little bit tough so i would come up on a hill and
8:22 am
i would see the truck coming in the background and i would get over the crest of the hill and i could start down using gravity as my friend to pick up my speed, the truck comes by and i wheel in right behind the truck and woosh i'm off and making my way towards orlando. i was a semi surfer. yes, i was a piggy bank -- what do you call it, piggy bank i don't know, just piggy banking along with them. i was wooshing my way to orlando. i made it -- did i make it? i don't know. if you want to see if i made it or not you have to come to orlando story club. orlando story club.com. >> reporter: the audience will judge him? >> yes, absolutely. and they would love him. >> reporter: all right. what are tickets to get in here? >> $5 at the door. >> reporter: john, amy, next wednesday night, we have a date at the abby.

seven years ago and just recently gotten city approval to convert it to a mosque and community center that. plans have have to be setback. the damage was mostly confined to one room. they hope they were not being targeted. >> our hope is that be so was trying to keep out of the cold, trying to stay warm. i can tell you we've been in this community for many decades. we've enjoyed good relationships. >> amy: with the heightened anti-islamic rhetoric and islamophobic let i can on the rise cair fl is taking it seriously. >> john: protestors are gathering today in downtown orlando to urge local lawmakers to stop legislation against planned parenthood. this week the florida house and senate will vote on a new bill that would put strict regulations on physicians and clinics that perform abortions.

8:30 am
you should take a sled down that. >> reporter: you know what, it's funny because this looks like it's about my height. it's the camera angle playing a trick. this is about seven feet of snow behind me, believe it or not. it's going to take a long time for this stuff to dissipate. we may have melting through the course of the day today, maybe a tiny bit, but it's still a mess around here and it is not easy to get around. this was my walk to work this morning. not that unusual until you see where i'm having to walk in the middle of the street, where it's at least relatively clear. digging out and driving my car wasn't really much of an option this morning. what really gets you as you walk through the streets is how quiet it is. nobody is out, and that's really not going to change much through the course of the day, at least as far as work travel is concerned. despite hitting a weekend the dig out is going to take days and the federal government is
8:31 am
so are nearly all area schools. >> we will see continued slick and dangerous roadways, so continue to stay off of the road. >> reporter: with huge snowplows clearing runways air travel is expected to resume but on a limited basis. dc's train station is pretty quiet and the schedule is hit and miss. this storm left a mess as you head north, too. and to philly and new york, and along the jersey shore, coastal flooding at least 30 deaths have been blamed on the storm. but there was a lighter side, too. a highly coordinated snowball fight in d.c. and yes, there was shredding with families taking full advantage of the new relaxed rules that allow thrill seekers to take full advantage of capitol hill. and they'll have another opportunity to do it today.
8:32 am
have a snow day today. there may be another one tomorrow. some schools are going to take tomorrow off. the house of representatives decided to take the entire week off. >> amy: interesting. >> john: doug had to dig his own car but he made it in along with the photographer and government is shut down for a week. >> reporter: i made it in. the federal employees get to stay home. >> amy: whatever. >> reporter: there is your tax dollars at work or not at work. >> amy: i'm sure they'll get it done from home. thanks, doug. >> john: the storm is also causing flight delays at oia today. we've been monitoring flight view all morning long. that's a website that tells you about delays. the flights in trouble this morning are coming from raleigh-durham, philly, new jersey, and, of course, new york, d.c., all those places. if you have a flight set for today or if you have someone coming in to town, check the

to the airport. fox 35 is your source for continuing coverage of the cold in any and the snow up north. you can check out fox35orlando.com and also download the fox 35 weather app. >> amy: trending right now, high school in kentucky facing controversy over their dress code policy. >> john: how one girl was humiliated by the way the school enforced the policy. >> reporter: the principal at a high school said this dress, she just walked down, but you saw it, was too short to be worn at school. take a look. the principal had this senior girl neal down so he could measure how far the hem of her dress was from the floor. the principal said if the gap between the floor and the hem of the dress is more than six inches, then the dress is too short. well, the girl was eventually sent home because with her arms raised above her head -- >> who does that? >> reporter: i know. it went up, of course, because
8:34 am
so it was eight inches. >> amy: was she wearing the black leggings too? >> reporter: yes, that's what she wore. >> amy: come on. >> reporter: they're tights. parents say it's not even a -- occur to them this modest dress might not be appropriate for school. take a listen. >> i had people saying that that's something they would wear to church. i mean, if it's appropriate for church even, why isn't it appropriate for you to go to school in? >> reporter: the principal of that school told the family hey, that entire dress code is in every student's handbook. we sent it home and you had to sign it so you should know better than to send your kid to school looking like this. >> amy: what? >> reporter: can you believe this? this turned out to be an all out crack down at that school. the same day 30 to 40 girls were sent home or told they needed to change because they were violating the dress code, but if you raised your hands then, of course, her hem is going to go
8:35 am
>> amy: but she is wearing dark black tights. you can't see her her legs. >> john: that is crazy. not to mention i didn't know that was protocol. is that how you measure dresses, get down on your knees and raise your hand? >> amy: our producer said that happened to her when she was in high school. so i guess it's pretty common. >> john: didn't know. all right, thanks. still to come, when you get engaged usually the woman gets a ring. >> amy: sure but in hollywood it looks like the guys do. it was on this day in history, yes it was, january 25th, 1924, the first ever winter olympics kicked off in the french alps, featuring 12 events in a total of six different sports.
8:37 am
first winter >> amy: i was off for a couple days next week so i don't know the answer because i didn't write this one. the first ever winter olympics kicked off in the french alps, which of these events was included in the first winter olympics? seems like they all would be. would it be the luge, the prestyle skiing or figure skating? >> john: let's do an audible. she has to go first. >> amy: i am going to guess it
8:38 am
think they would all be in there. i would say the freestyle skiing was included. i don't know. what do you think, david martin? >> reporter: good morning to you from the abby. robin, you heard the question. you heard the answers. go, my friend. >> i got to go with luge. i love luge. luge is the right way to go. >> reporter: good answer. >> amy: all right. let's send it over to gina and jayme. >> jayme: i'm feeling like b. put it there. >> amy: you're saying skiing? all right. what do you think? >> amy: i think it was figure skating because that's contact. freestyle skating i think they
8:39 am
think it was wild and crazy. >> figure skating? b for me, c for lu. >> john: i'm going with luanne. her logic made sense. they've always done figure skating. >> amy: right. >> john: not free school. >> amy: okay. let's give you the answers because we don't know. >> john: figure skating. >> amy: figure skating was the answer. the luge was added not until 1964. freestyle skiing, so you're right, luanne, apparently this is nontraditional skiing, because freestyle that event was not included until 1992. >> john: the x games. >> amy: sorry, david. 1964 for the luge. thanks for playing. >> john: let's check out what is hot in hollywood today. >> amy: 100.3 joining us with the scoop. good morning, good to see you. i love your hat. very cute. >> good morning, darling.
8:40 am
so we're starting with -- an interesting i guess a man engaugement ring. >> i love the idea. i actually did this for my husband. >> john: you did it? >> reporter: i did. i went on a cruise and i got down on my knees and everything. this was after he asked me to mary marry him. but apparently i wasn't the only one. celebrities are doing this. a man engagement ring, and skylar austin and anna kemp are doing it. so he showed it off, said i don't care about today's tradition. this is what i want to do. and he's showing it of off on instray graham. and apparently a lot of people are liking it. >> john: it's always been the argument, okay, you know, an engagement ring shows the woman is off the market. for the guys there is nothing to ever say they were off limits, so this would be that.
8:41 am
>> amy: there you go. maybe just spray your man with perfume. that could work. there you go. >> john: all right. >> amy: thanks, jenny. >> john: is it warm? is that a warm hat or just very stylish? >> well, just stylish and warm at the same time. i get too cold too easily. and it's way too cold for me. >> amy: 8:49. let's check in with jayme king because it's cold out there. >> jayme: i'm on the cusp of that now guys, 35 at deland. 20s in ocala, gainesville at 30, and bushnell from the freezing mark, now at 34. cloud. into the theme parks and close to the theme parks through the four corners, polk county the frost advisory going strong. a freeze warning continues for
