9:05 am
protestors about a number of issues that the school board has been focusing on, so they're doing what they call walk ins before school each day this week to get a little bit of attention. they're urging the school board to focus on less testing, cleaner classrooms, and more resources for schools, rather than things like whether or not kids should wear school uniforms. the protests will continue all week long. the vote on the school uniforms will be held later this afternoon, in fact this evening at the volucia county school board meeting. fox 35 news. >> john: also new this morning troopers say that two people were killed in a crash that shut down i-4 overnight. the road is back open right now. night. right across the lake monroe bridge from seminole county. according to the florida highway patrol, the crash started on the eastbound side after a mustang rear ended a pickup truck. that truck then smashed through a guardrail and ended up in the westbound lanes. troopers say two people in the
9:06 am
a third person was airlifted to orc in critical condition. the driver of the other car was not hurt. right now troopers do not believe that alcohol was a factor in this crash. >> amy: dozens of homeless people are refusing to leave an administration building in volucia county. they say they have nowhere else to go. ryan is joining us with more on that this morning. >> reporter: good morning. they have been camping out outside of the building for nearly two months now. this started when the city closed the city park the homeless were staying in. they're camping outside the administration building because it's county property. we showed you yesterday, that's keeping them from being arrested fortress passing because they're on the county property. you can see to take people to a temporary shelter. the problem was very few took them up on that offer. >> they can't do overnight but they should have attempted to do something before now. >> reporter: the city is working towards building a regional
9:07 am
advocates say it's a great idea but will take years to build and a solution is needed now. >> john: you decide 2016, a new poll released this morning shows the republican iowa caucus is now a two man race. donald trump is at 31%, senator cruz at 29%. among likely republican voters. marco rubio the only other candidate with double digit support is at 13% right now. meanwhile the democratic presidential candidates getting together for the final time before the iowa caucuses. hillary clinton, bernie sanders, martin o'malley taking part in the town hall meeting in des moines. the candidates focused on the economy. >> today in knoxville in my town hall i called out a man he said we never had it so good except when your husband was president, because we tackled income inequality. >> with democratic socialism
9:08 am
rights, the right to economic security, is -- should exist in the united states of america. >> john: there are no more democratic debates scheduled before the iowa caucuses. that takes flax monday. >> amy: a former ucf football player in trouble with the law for a second time. he was arrested over the weekend on assault and battery charges. he reportedly got into a fight at a bar in massachusetts. he was also arrested in orange county in 2012 after he allegedly punched a deputy at a party. >> john: a bill moving forward in tallahassee banning almost all abortions in the state of florida. a house committee passed the bill monday that defines life as starting at conception. for mothers who are at risk of death or permanent injury two doctors would have to certify in writing that it would be necessary. the bill has been filed by the same republican senator for the last seven years, but monday was
9:09 am
some lawmakers say the bill would likely be ruled to violate the florida constitution and previous u.s. supreme court decisions. also happening today a group of mothers from orange county are going to meet with lawmakers to talk about recess. they are pushing a bill that would require all elementary schools statewide to require at least 20 minutes of recess each and every school day. some lawmakers worry there isn't enough money to extend a school day, so it recess. the bill is being discussed before the house. k through 12 subcommittee later on this morning. the bill is not yet on the agenda in the senate. coming up, a travel warning for pregnant women. >> amy: fox medical team explains why they say pregnant women should not be traveling. to popular cruise ship destinations. that is coming up. >> reporter: we are live at the salt scene here in windemere where nature is the best medicine. they say you can breath well,
9:10 am
if you come down here and take advantage of salt therapy. halo therapy they call it. what is it about the himalayan white rock salt in this room that is making these people come
9:11 am
we'll talk to them coming up in >> amy: that's a little different. 9:12. bringing us in from break, a nice look at international drive. the big pga convention is in town, and it's huge. if you're into golf you probably already knew that, but it's going to be busy in the attractions area. >> john: on the health watch the government is urging pregnant women not to travel to some popular cruise ship destinations. the problem is all the mosquito born illness. >> amy: a total of 15 countries are on the travel warning list because of the zika virus. i think what's frightening about this is the implications that it has for the baby should you get
9:12 am
mosquitoes and you get sick. >> absolutely. and i think that that is where the biggest fear is coming from. you know, what we have seen in brazil is unheard of. about 3800 cases of the disease. they have had 3800 since november. and what they have seen is the women they believe that are being infected by the zika virus, probably early on, probably first trimester causing this. the brain is not developing. the skull is not developing. it's very, very small. the evidence they have that the zika virus is causing this is because they have had the outbreak, had the epidemic but found the virus in some of the tissue samples of some of the babies miss carried, and in the amniotic fluid of pregnant women who have babies. so this huge, huge concern prompting health officials to
9:13 am
to get pregnant, or even in any trimester of pregnancy, don't travel to these areas unless you absolutely have to. if you do, you need to protect yourself from mosquito bites, of course, and certainly talk to your doctor. but i will tell you there has been at least one case report of possible sexual transmission of it, of the virus. again, just one potential case. and there is also the concern with transfusions, maybe perhaps blood or organs. no documented cases of that as of yet. >> amy: where did this come from all of a sudden? we've heard of so many mosquito related illnesses over the years, and west nile and malaria. where did this come from? why haven't we heard much about >> that's a great question. you're right. and we should say here in florida we do still have west nile, we should protect ourselves from mosquitoes, but just seems like they're coming over from africa, coming over from asia, and then they are causing, you know, a person comes over, they may be
9:14 am
then the mosquito bites them, then another person, and then those mosquitoes, and before you know it it starts to spread like wildfire. so when you have huge populations of these mosquitoes in individuals, unless you have had the disease, you don't have any immunity. so we got a completely vulnerable population here in the americas, and that's why it's spreading so, so rapidly. and when you look at the particular mosquito that is carrying this, it's the -- we have been them right here in florida. they are not the dusk and dawn, they are day biters and they occur in urban areas. they're also been tracked all the way up to new york, new jersey, so we see a lot of these mosquitoes traveling farther and farther. some say it's climate change, some say it's just the spread and the ability for these mosquitoes to multiply because we've had milder climate. so there is a big, big concern
9:15 am
about this. >> all right. just got to protect yourself. that's the best advice for everybody. always great to talk to you. thank you so much. 9:16 right now. let's get right over to jayme king and talk about what's a happening outside. >> jayme: we got the 50s for you, couple spots checking in in the low 60s. overall, decent day. got a lot of cloud cover to contend with and few isolated showers along the coast later this afternoon. 10% at best from cape canaveral southbound. it looks like the rain chance is going to be a big one for us. we got a lot of rain developing along the gulf coast. starting to come into play, to bring about a rain chance tomorrow at 80 or 90% type coverage. it's going to be a big sharp rise in rainstorm chances, and again it looks as though the window of rain opportunity could
9:16 am
maybe two days of decent rain amounts, as the low continues pushing back out towards the state. that will occur late tonight you through the morning hours tomorrow. exceeding that 50% mark, so looking likely at this time, a good bet i could say. certainly want to bring the umbrella packet and use it at some point tomorrow. especially by the morning as the low races by. let's stop it and show you at about 1:30, kind of an ongoing thing. we might see stronger storms play out south of orlando in that time. as the low moves away we continue with another rain wave of rainfall. the chance especially high both wednesday and thursday. for today, no rain risk. again just a day full of cloud cover out there. little bit of sun, some clouds, mostly cloudy or blend of sun and clouds. i like to look at things on the brighter side. we'll go with a mix of sun and
9:17 am
70s for highs today. for tonight, around 60, everyone seeing much milder conditions compared to days past. you see that the rain chances are rising tomorrow and thursday. and then by friday all the way through early and mid to next week, an especially dry stretch. we warm things up. and you can see there are no chance of rain and ample sun just in time for the weekend. over to you. >> amy: thanks, jayme. coming up, it's a place to relax and really have your skin feeling great. >> john: david martin is at the spa. it's a salt spa this morning. good morning, david. >> reporter: the salt scene in windemere, john, you have been inside the kids room all morning. we showed you a peek earlier of the adult room, right? we'll go there in a second. after the break we'll talk about this new thing, one of a kind in orlando, the salt bed. yeah.
9:18 am
don't go you like being picture perfect. you should want your banking to be too. stop into td bank and we'll help set you up with picture perfect banking. new customers, open a checking and savings account and you can get a polaroid cube+
9:19 am
>> amy: welcome back to "good day orlando." here is another live view looking downtown. things are a little snow if you're headed eastbound on i-4. the traffic is not moving too fast. it should get better. >> john: salt can do a lot to the body. >> amy: and there is a new place in town that is basically a salt spa. david martin is at the salt scene to show us exactly how it works and why it might be good for you. >> reporter: i love it this morning. good morning to you. hi, john. let's take a look at the salt bed.
9:20 am
it is. hi, robin. what is she doing in there? >> what she is doing is we have two different options. we have the salt room, which is a 45 minute session. however, this is a 25 minute session. the benefits are exactly the same. but people who may have -- are limited on time, this enables them to get their daily or weekly benefit with less time. >> reporter: in a more concentrated format? >> it's not more concentrated. because the bed is so much smaller, it just simply takes less time to fill this area. >> reporter: very good. thank you. let's go introduce you to the owner of the salt scene, the one who started it all. hi, how are you doctor? >> good morning. >> reporter: what are we standing in? >> we're standing in my ocean room, one of my salt rooms. my popular room.
9:21 am
made of himalayan salt. you're one of a fee -- >> most of the himalayan salt you see is pink. i wanted white. it's much more rare and i think the levels, there is a different negative ion level. >> reporter: if you had ten seconds to tell people what benefit they have going in here what would it be? >> just relief symptoms of respiratory. >> reporter: let's talk to my new friend here. what's your name? >> laura king. >> reporter: this is your first time. you can taste it in your mouth, can't you. >> i can. little salty. >> reporter: what are you in here for? what is your problem? >> i suffer from allergies, and sinus pain and pressure, and when i'm at the beach i don't ever have any symptoms. this may sense to me to come here and try this out. >> reporter: you're the second person that we talked to that mentioned that. it takes about six times to see if you get a result from this, so good luck on that. this man comes back here religiously for a good reason.
9:22 am
he works for the kissimmee fire department. how are you doing, sir? >> very good, thanks. >> reporter: before you came to the salt scene what was your problem. >> i found black mold in an ac unit and it was causing me to have upper respiratory infections and pneumonia and taking treatments all the time, and stuff like that, and since i've been doing this only about a month i'm already off the nebulizer, so -- >> reporter: you're seeing immediate improvement. >> exactly. >> reporter: how often do you come here? >> about three or four times a week. >> reporter: and an hour inside? >> 45 minutes. >> reporter: do you sit and read and sleep? >> i play candy crush and sometimes fall asleep, yeah. >> reporter: that is common to fall asleep in this room? >> yes, it's very common. most of our clients fall asleep because it's so relaxing. >> reporter: a lot of people say i want to try this and they should? >> they should. >> reporter: they come down here to the salt scene. what does it cost? and does insurance cover it?
9:23 am
and packages -- it's cost-effective for a lot of people. and health insurance does not cover it, but health flex spending or health savings plans will. you just have to check your benefits. >> reporter: very good. they're open every day except -- >> sundays. >> reporter: except sundays. call and make an appointment. you got to make a reservation. >> yes, some of our rooms get filled up pretty quickly. >> reporter: thank you. thank you very much for your time this morning. pleasure meeting you. good luck with all of this. back to you in the studio. >> amy: love that it's helping people. thank you, david. coming up a glass of wine. >> john: the proposal to allow alcohol at train stations in florida, straight ahead. how specialty grocery stores like trader joe's and whole foods can impact the value of your home.
9:24 am
really doing the hot line bling today.
9:25 am
35. >> john: welcome back to "good day orlando." it is about 9:30. >> amy: so glad you're with us. we want to get you caught up on headlines. investigators say a fire at a y in daytona beach sunday was set intentionally. the building was set to become a mosque. the council for american-islamic relations tells us that that fire was intentionally set. however, firefighters believe it was homeless people who were inside of the building who were trying to keep warm, and that they appeared to have set some books on fire in the effort. the building sustained about $5,000 in damage. >> john: an orlando firefighter who is accused of crashing into 18 cars while under the influence will be formally charged. prosecutors say that cory was off duty when he started hitting cars in the parking garage of last september.
9:26 am
to speak to stinard his eyes were bloodshot. they didn't give him a sobriety test. >> amy: doctors say a lucky hat likely saved this young man who was hit in the head with a stray bullet. he was walking home with a friend in deland over the weekend when he heard what he thought were firecrackers. he felt a sharp pain in the back of his head and realized he had been shot. doctors believe that the plastic clip on the back of his baseball cap deflected that bullet just enough to slow down the momentum of it. >> pow, pow. it was a firecracker. and then he says he felt like he got hit in the head with a baseball bat. and he put his hand back and there was blood. >> amy: we're told that was his mom there that you heard from in that phone interview. right now there is still too much swelling to remove the bullet, but doctors say the fact that he is still alive is
9:27 am
police are still searching for the shooter. >> john: also a new measure approved by the florida senate lets you drink while riding the train. the proposal is part of a bill that would let alcohol and tobacco licenses be sold to owners of railroad stations. that includes the upcoming all aboard florida train that will connect orlando to south florida. >> amy: time for your morning business headlines. joining us live is the lovely lauren simonetti. happy tuesday, my friend. how are you? >> reporter: happy tuesday. i'm good, and i'm happy because so is wall street. we got a higher open. dow is up 85 points. still below 16,000, but the price of oil goes up, you know what happens. the price of stock goes up. that is the relationship that has been so tightly connected all year. >> amy: it has been just a okay. so i think this is really interesting. it says if you live near a trader joe's or whole foods, that your home will actually be worth more money.
9:28 am
>> reporter: a lot more money. zillow looked at home prices nationally and in certain areas where there are certain grocery stores, and found that from 1997 all the way to 2014 if a home was within a mile of either whole foods or trader joe's that home's value went up about two times as much as the national median price for a similar home. so goes to show you those stores attract certain clientele, say something about the value of the neighborhood perhaps and really boosts the real estate near the stores. i was looking for a house last year and my realtor -- oh, there's a whole food. and i thought enough with the whole food. i don't need to live on the same block, maybe i should have reconsidered. >> amy: exactly. turns out it was a good thing. your realtor was on to something. so the next story does not surprise me because i'm bad about this. i'm standing in inlook, waiting, waiting, i'm like this is cute.
9:29 am
we're talking about impulse buys. >> reporter: eight in ten of us make impulse purchases. half of us spend at least one half dollars doing so. and 20% of us spend at least a thousand dollars on that impulse purchase, the urge to splurge, buying something on a whim whether you need it or not. >> amy: i'm like i could use mints for my purse or a pack of gum. >> reporter: i'm known for the couple hundred dollar ones here and there but the thousand dollar ones, no, they need permission. >> amy: all right. we'll talk to you later. >> reporter: see you tomorrow. >> amy: if you would like to see more of lauren you can find her on fox business network at 5:00 in the morning. 9:34. jayme king we're sending it over to you.
9:30 am
9:34, and it's our accuweather forecast update. we have got temperatures now sailing up through and into the 60s at this moment. we're looking good temp wise, sky wise, let's say we're not going to get a sunshine award today. mostly cloudy and isolated risk of couple of coastal showers firing south of cape canaveral down to indian river and the palm beaches. this thing, this brewing process, it's like watching the slow "trainwreck." like to see the low emerge here, going to see a low setup along the gulf of mexico. kind of a prolonged period of rainfall, the chances for it here for the midweek peek.
9:31 am
and the weekend looks fantastic. ample sunshine, good looking stuff. >> john: maybe josh has deals on golf this weekend. did you find any of those? >> jayme: golf? i can look. >> john: great deal, huh? >> reporter: you know which of my friends pay for toothpaste? none of them. you can always get free toothpaste. let me show with you how to do this. almost every week, because you see me bringing it in, so first up let me share both walgreens, cvs, either way, you can't go wrong, this one, this deal at walgreens get colgate dental care either mouthwash or tooth faith normally $7, on sale for $4. they give you money back at the register. we have tons of coupons. a 2-dollar coupon that you can print out, bring in to walgreen,

>> john: nice start to your day on "good day orlando." happy tuesday to you. this story is going to get a lot of attention.
9:38 am
this morning. a sloth and a panda. >> john: start of a joke. luanne joins us now with the headlines. >> reporter: police found a sloth on the side of the road yesterday. take a look. how adorable -- do we have it? there he is. the little guy is clinging to the guardrail there. police in ecuador say he was trying to cross the street. look at his face. isn't that cute? the officers took him to the vet to be checked out. he's doing just fine. they released him back into the wild. that sounds like the start of another joke. why did the south sloth try to cross the road. check out the next story. a man in new york city is making a mess of all the snow they got by renting out an igloo. it was listed on air b and b for $200 a night. are you kidding me?
9:39 am
five people offered to rent the thing out. the website took down the listing because the igloo does not have any running water. that means no toilets. and no electricity. >> john: 200 bucks a night? >> amy: i don't get the draw. you could get hurt doing that. >> reporter: and this panda at the zoo in d.c. is loving the cold and the snow up there. the panda made headlines. he's having a great time. and he's at it again. the zoo posted another video of it rolling down a hill it looks like. he was like making snow angels. i didn't know pandas like the cold. >> amy: i didn't either. i thought they were more the warm weather type. i have to do my panda research. >> john: we should create that in the sand and see if it goes viral.
9:40 am
>> john: why not? here is jayme with your forecast. >> jayme: thank you. good to see you. let's talk, i 44 as john mentioned, we are wrapping up gdo tuesday edition. one last weather cast for you and you can see the numbers are starting to inflate. heading up temperatures are and we should cash in somewhere in the low to mid 70s for the highs today. mostly cloudy skies, chance of some isolated coastal rain, 10% at best on that. i put that in the forecast because of shifting winds and increase and surface moisture at this time. that will contribute to higher rain chances for tomorrow. for tomorrow uv forecast is a four. keep that in mind. if you're going to be out and about when clouds are looming high you got to protect your skin. cover up and protect if you're lucky enough to be outdoors. cloud scan, this is the visible satellite. another chunk moving the metro of orlando at this time, getting ready to pounce on
9:41 am
line in all this, increase in clouds is because the rain window of opportunity opens up big and wide, say ahh. here comes the low. cold front on the way. clouds increase, rain chances moving up. might we find two distinct times of rain, one tomorrow morning? it begins to collect, and we see what looks to be a bit of a lull. and bam, another wave of rain thursday. chance about 60% or 70%. tomorrow that starts on the earlier side of things. here is the front tied to it all. snowfall over new mexico, the texas panhandle, the upper grade great lakes, more snow, another band of light precip approaching d.c. and new york city. but everything hinges on this system and the overall ramifications, the effects we find locally for the next two days. temperatures are warming up around the eastern third of the country.
9:42 am
