9:00 am
>> amy: we're back. it is the 9:00 hour of "good day orlando." we figure that it will make us feel better about what it looks like outside. >> john: let's take a look at what's coming up in the 9:00 show. it's been this way all morning long. on the left side is the mess on i-4 heading towards daytona beach. it's still raining. you jayme king is going to let us know once this passes through what's next. you got to stick around for the seven-day because you're going to want to make plans. this is why we love central florida. >> amy: parents pushing for change. how they're working to make
9:01 am
florida's elementary schools. >> john: and docks and glocs in the news. we have a physician in the house to discuss how much freedom doctors have about asking patients about weapons in their homes. >> reporter: la nouba, disney spring, they got a couple new updates. we got the other update in 9:00 hour of "good day orlando." >> john: i love to see that. when i go to a show like that, you think these are people wasn'ter doing around our community. they live right here. >> john: this much talent out at the mall. here, jayme. >> jayme: yes. yes. good morning to you guys. we're busy in the weather and traffic center this morning. that's for sure. take a look here from coastal flagler all the way down through the cape now. pretty good cluster of heavy rain right there around the kennedy space center, around the
9:02 am
we continue with action. lighter to moderate rainfall, don't let your guards down. another batch, reloading. a bit of a lull. another batch moving again northeasterly at 15 to 20 miles an hour. this may be getting a little bit quicker in the overall forward speed. i believe this will be knocking on the door over the coming hours. and for about the next 36 hours the wet scene, kind of off and on throughout that time period here. it's going to be a wet one. 60s for us at this time with titusville at 70 and melbourne at about 72. here is the day ahead for you. showing us rain likely, isolated storms, 70 by 2:00 and 69 by 5:00. the roadways have been a wreck all morning long for us. again, all of our area cams, the fdot cams showing that the rain is really accumulating on local roadways and continues to do so. a lot of run off. doesn't get much better, because as we wrap up the day part
9:03 am
chances for rain. fantastic weather, 60s and upper 70s are part of the forecast by tuesday, very warm. bright central florida sunshine for you during that time. >> john: developing this morning it's an all out search to find this little boy. >> amy: investigators are very concerned about 3-year-old xander quigley. they believe he's in danger. investigators believe he is with his mother who helped her boyfriend escape from a work detail. jackie orozco is joining us live in volucia county. >> reporter: good morning, amy. i've been staying in touch with volucia county sheriff's deputies trying to get the latest on the search that little boy and they were telling me that they consider the man that he is with the mother's boyfriend armed and dangerous. family members passed out flyers hoping someone has seen her 3-year-old grandson, xander quigley. >> we wanted to come to daytona to pass out flyers and bring awareness to bring my grandson home.
9:04 am
of the bathrooms, gas stations we stopped by, if we see someone passing by when we're walking to the car we'll hand it to them. >> reporter: tammy traveled from philadelphia to daytona beach where her grandson was last seen. >> he's so loveable. i love him ape want him home. >> reporter: volucia county sheriff's deputy say the boy's mother is on the ron with her son and boyfriend gary bullock junior. deputies say bullock escaped from work release program friday after he cut off his ankle monitor. the three haven't been seen since. >> the reason that we -- that he's listed as missing and possibly in danger is because of the circumstances of the escape, and the fact that he's in the company of an escaped prisoner, on the run, eluding capture right now is cause for concern. >> reporter: deputies say bullock is a convicted robber and was serving a eight year sentence. he's now wanted on charges of escape, destruction of an
9:05 am
mischief. the boy's mother natasha quigley is facing charges of aiding an escapee. again, a missing child alert has been issued and if you have seen that little boy or his mother or the boyfriend you're asked to call authorities immediately. for now reporting live in volucia county, jackie orozco, fox 35 news. >> amy: thanks. the state has also issued a missing child alert for these two children. they're from indian river county south of brevard. they were last seen at a home in salsmer. they could be with their parents. gomez is wanted in connection with a murder that happened last week. if you have seen any of them you're asked to call police right away. >> john: deputies say that a man was shot while trying to catch burglars who were breaking into his car. this happened around 11:30 last night on park commons drive. that's in the lake nona area. deputies say the victim confronted two men trying to break into his vehicle, and
9:06 am
that's when he was shot. the victim is expected to survive. the suspects drove away and they have not been found. >> amy: you decide 2016, donald trump says he will skip tomorrow night's gop debate. >> john: the rivals for the white house are talking about it. take a listen to what trump just said. >> probably i won't be doing the debate. i'm going to have something else in iowa. we'll do something where we raise money for the veterans and the wounded warriors. we're going to do something simultaneously with the debate, but most likely i'm not going to do the debate. >> john: that was from yesterday. the candidates campaign confirmed it. he will not be there. they sent out a statement. here's what it reads. unlike the very stupid highly incompetent people running our country into the ground mr. trump knows when to walk away. that decision follows trump as calls for megyn kelly to be removed from that debate. >> amy: as you can imagine trump's rivals have a lot to say this. >> john: of course, somebody has to fill the void here.
9:07 am
and a lot of people are filling that void this morning. this is the first time that we can remember that a frontrunner has decided not to attend a major presidential debate. and as you can imagine, trump's republican opponents are definitely taking advantage of that. take a look at this. ted cruz tweeted out, i challenge donald trump to a one-on-one debate. tell him to accept. #ducking donald. that's what he's calling him now. and jeb bush says, donald trump, do you know who else is scared of tough questions from fox and megyn kelly? barack obama. enough whining. and that is just two of the many that are out there right now. so what do you think? do you agree with trump's decision to skip tomorrow night's debate? we asked you on twitter. and here is what you said. 53% of you said yes. i agree with trump skipping the deba 47% of you said no.
9:08 am
to vote head over to our twitter page at fox 35 news. guys, back to you. >> john: thanks. also today an elderly man who was injured when a van was carjacked is going to find out if he's going to be able to walk again. >> amy: such a sad story. this happened monday outside a house in at moon springs. 80-year-old herbert doctor was being picked up by a van for his dialysis appointment. deputies say the driver was trying to help him into the van when renee jumped into the van and started to drive off with it. doctor was not even buckled into his seat yet. he was tossed all around, injured his head and hips. his daughter talked to fox 35 about his now long road to recovery. >> if they can't do the surgery, he'll be in a wheelchair permanently. if he's in there permanently that's going to kill him. >> amy: he is being held in jail without bond. >> john: the volucia county school board is delaying their
9:09 am
>> amy: after listening to parents, board members decided they would add jeans to the proposed december code. they already plan on requiring kids k through 12 to wear a collared polo shirt. but with the new addition of jeans, they're going to need to meet at least one more time before they put plans into motion for the next school year. the board has yet to schedule a new date yet for that next vote. coming up, local moms battling for recess in tallahassee. >> john: one of the mothers joins us live to talk about the next step in the push to bring playtime back to schools. david martin is getting playtime. good morning, dave. >> reporter: good morning to you, john and amy. la nouba just updated their showdown here at disney springs. cirque du soleil, and one of the acts features these guys right here, the b boys. how you doing?
9:10 am
9:11 am
what's going on. it's all about the rain now, starting to go along the coast. there is a marine warning in effect for coastal waters to the east of the melbourne area. and i just told our facebook fans and followers and viewers on facebook live, we continue with new record rainfalls for daytona beach, smashing the old record back in 1937, orlando, a new rainfall record. melbourne also with a rainfall record waiting on new data out of vero beach. but this is all tied to that first initial swath, that first push of all of this heavy dense rainfall coming up and out. the gulf of mexico. and guess what. we got more on the way. it's back through here, so a little bit of a lull, maybe a few light showers, couple of springs wouldn't shock me. we welcome in the next area here, quite a bit of heavy rain. this line here went severe for a brief moment or two, spawning a tornado in southwestern portions
9:12 am
but you can see now that next area reloading and heading up into the northeasterly fashion. i do anticipate another wave of rain moving in as we head closer to about the new hour. 62 in gainesville, 63 at the villages. melbourne through titusville, all of brevard county at 70 degrees plus a warmer start brevard. rain likely, isolated storms about 70 by 2:00, 69 for the drive home. ongoing rain chances. by tomorrow we continue with chances at about 70%. come friday though down we go. rain chances, temperatures though looking good, and ample sunshine in place all weekend long. so the modeling showing us that secondary batch of rain moving in on top. by tomorrow another round of rain but the good news is once that low moves away and another low comes out of the desert southwest that should bring us clear skies and big high pressure filling in. we are looking good and way better than we got now.
9:13 am
looking weekend. 72 at orlando today. vero beach one of the warmer spots, 75. your forecast for tonight, widespread 60s in place. ocala about 58. gainesville 56, and sumter county the bushnell area around 60. our forecast for the next seven days, looking good. love it. and you should, too. very nice weather overall. it looks like temperatures again around 79 for us by tuesday, and 60 as we take you to the morning low there, no rain in sight. that's your forecast. i guess it proves -- >> john: well the nice spot comes out. all right. local parents take their battle for mandatory recess to the capitol. >> amy: a bill that requires 20 minutes of recess every day passed the first committee yesterday. the proposal says that recess cannot be taken away from a child for disciplinary or academic reasons.
9:14 am
grade. lawmakers say although students are in school to learn we have to let the kids be kids. >> these are children. they're not little learning robots. and i just think it's -- with all the important stuff that we teach -- we mandate that they be taught and that they have to learn, we have to let our kids be kids. >> amy: that's what a lot of parents are saying. yesterday was the first of three stops in the house. the bill has to be heard by the senate before it can become law. joining us this morning to talk about it is amy, part of a local group that todays themselves the recess moms. great to see you again. nice to have you back. so your thoughts first on this passing the first hurdle yesterday? >> yesterday was a really exciting day for us. we have -- it's been a long process. yesterday we finally felt like we were heard, the research was understood, our kids were respected. it was a really good day for us.
9:15 am
don't get recess. are there a lot that don't get recess? >> : it's inconsistent from school to school from class to class. i might have recess at my school and a mile down the road they're not doing recess. >> john: the other thing people say is how can kids not have recess. a lot of us look at say they don't have recess? is that the same thing you hear? >> i do in tallahassee. they're saying common sense, why aren't these kids playing. and i said i don't know, but they're not. and that's what we have been trying to implement in all schools because the research is abundant that this is critical for children and their >> amy: people may not understand it, that it's really principal, which is why some schools have it and some don't. and in the pressure on these educators they feel, they have some crammed into their work day they feel we can put that by the >> correct. get that. the teachers are being put through a lot of pressure but i'm concerned about my kids.
9:16 am
now. there's other problem going on in education and i get that. let's give these kids a break now and let's go back and try to fix other things, but -- >> john: by the time if it takes two or three years this whole group of kids will have never had recess. in this bill they're saying that they can't take it away. so if a child was acting up you can't say you don't get recess today. include? >> because in the last year and a half on our facebook group that we've had we had so many comments from mothers that we're told there is one kid in the class that was misbehaving and the whole class didn't go out for recess. or the kids weren't quiet at lunch so didn't go out for recess. somebody didn't turn in their homework so guess what, you're not going out for recess. those are inappropriate discipline for a child. >> amy: the whole point of recess is to get the wiggles out. >> need to be done daily for them to focus, to sit in the classroom.
9:17 am
expect these kids to sit without a break. >> john: how can people find more about your group? are you on facebook? i'm sure people want to read more about it. >> we have a facebook group, recess for all florida students. we have a web page which is restore recess.com. and you know -- >> john: all right. >> amy: do you feel like the momentum is there, like this is going to go all the way through? >> i feel the momentum is good. the problem is no matter what happens in the senate -- the house we still need to get on the senate agenda. there has been an outcry of support from the public and from the media pushing him to put this on the agenda, and he hasn't, and we're nervous, that one man will be able to silent so many voices. i respect the political process and he has the right to vote against our bill but let us be heard and let the people vote. >> amy: what the viewers at home should know about that is if they want it heard in the senate they need to contact senator legg. thank you so much.
9:18 am
coming up, acrobatics, oh, and david martin. >> john: he's all of those things. >> amy: yes, he is. >> reporter: good morning to you. we are on the stage of la nouba down here at dig disney springs. with cirque du soleil performers. there are two new acts you must check out. you met flying buda in the last commercial. this is incredible. how are you? >> i'm all the way from new york city. >> reporter: wow. he talks fast. and this is -- oh, nice. how are you, my friend? >> i'm doing great. i'm doing great. i'm from puerto rico. i represent true magic, baby. >> reporter: john, amy, they

>> john: whose version is this? >> amy: this is new. >> john: anybody know? >> amy: nope. but it's a -- it's ugly downtown. that's the live view on the right. on the left is live view of traffic on i-4 at maitland. i can't see. my eyes aren't that good. it is not a pretty sight out there. it's going to be a wet day most of the day. grab an umbrella, rain jacket or something before you head out. >> john: we need to hear from our friends at the barn. it's been a while since we checked out the cirque du soleil
9:21 am
>> amy: it's so much fun. la nouba wows audience of all ages. david martin joins us at disney hi, david. >> reporter: i saw the show like this. i swear amy i was watching it like this, because half the acts are death defying, flying from the ceiling, dropping down. i felt much safer with one of the newer acts because it was on the ground. this is matthew sparks. how are you, sir? >> good morning. i'm well. >> reporter: what's your official title? >> head coach and dance captain. they are perfect fit. the show is as a youthful energy, has a hip-hop feel to it. these guys coming in here, it feels like they've always been here, feels like the natural beginning of the show. >> reporter: should we make them prove it? >> i think we should. >> reporter: good morning, boys. show us what you got. pressure's on. this is the flying buda from ukraine. he's good, i know he's good. all right.
9:22 am
been good. fantastic. >> it has helped revitalize things. the beginning of the show is all basically brand-new, and the audience -- the show begins with energy and sustains itself in a way that i think it hasn't before. >> reporter: these guys are so talented. they have been b boying for a long time. some of them are national championships around the world. did you find these three specifically for the show? >> what we do is we have an international task department that works and 64s the globe to find the best of the best. these guys are three of the top b boys in the world. you're not going to see anything like this anywhere. two of these guys are red bull finalists. they toured with people like janet jackson. these are really three of the top dancers in the world today, and they're going to light things up. >> reporter: they do two shows a night. >> nearly 500 shows a year, but they take incredible care of
9:23 am
>> reporter: they really are. and is it improvised to some degree every night or is there a specific step they do? >> it's actually both. there are car yes eces of the show. these guys have a solo set that they can do, and some of them the guys dancing right now flying buda i've never seen him do the same thing twice. i love it. >> reporter: tickets start at $52 through april 2nd for florida residents. the show is 90 minutes long? >> 90 minutes. actually a little bit of intermission with clowns. there is -- they're so good. they brought new energy that works its way through everything. i think about 30% of the show is new once you take in the new clowns, new costumes, new music, no lighting, two new acts to start the show and an act that has been put in the last couple years. it's a new show. >> reporter: you guys -- i can't recommend it enough. every seat in this theater is intimate, it's good. you will not miss any of the action.
9:24 am
send it back to you. boys, thank you very much. >> john: that was amazing. >> amy: wow. i got to go to that show. i got to go. a travel alert for -- a woman -- for women that is pregnant is bigger than before. >> john: it's 9:27. what you see is what you get, although it's ending here in some parts of central florida. we'll have the full look of a
9:25 am
we got >> john: it is 9:31. i'm john brown. >> amy: i'm amy kaufeldt. happy you're with us on this wet and yucky wednesday. we want to get you caught up on some of the headlines. >> john: leaders are meeting to talk about that homeless problem that continues there. this comes as volucia county administration center announces they will keep their building open. upwards of 80 or a hundred homeless people have been camped outside that building for weeks.
9:26 am
down by the city after the bathrooms were vandalized. they have since been fixed but the park is only being opened by the city for special events. >> amy: two brevard county deputies are recovering after they were beaten by someone they were trying to arrest. it happened yesterday morning at a home on pineapple avenue in mimms. the deputies were called out to the house because a plan and his girlfriend were fighting. the deputies tried to separate the two when that attack actually happened. investigators say skylar francis pulled out a collapsible baton and started to beat deputy michael hriciso. his partner deputy skinner was hit in the trial when she tried to intervene. the deputies were able to take francis along with his girlfriend into custody. francis was charged with two counts of attempted murder of a law enforcement officer. johnson was charged with resisting arrest without violence. both deputies are expected to make a full recovery. >> john: a leesburg high school is buzzing about a former player
9:27 am
danny trevakian is a linebacker from the broncos. year. that's pretty cool. his teachers and coaches say he was just an all around good kid. he also played college at the university of kentucky. there is he from his homecoming days. he's on the biggest stage in the sports planet. >> amy: time for your morning business headlines. 9:33. joining us live from new york city is the beautiful lauren simonetti. you're wearing green. this is a good sign, right? >> reporter: no, i'm sorry, i jinxed it. do you is down 130, three minutes into the session. boeing out with earnings, outlook weighing on the stock. investors disappointed, lots of other reasons in addition to oil being cheap now. the fed out with their statement on interest rates this afternoon. we'll see what they say about the state of the global economy. that's what everybody is worried >> amy: all right.
9:28 am
zika virus, we have been talking about this lately. issues in florida, people worried about cruising. now the airlines are trying to help people out if they're concerned about this, right? >> reporter: right. if you are traveling to any of the 24 regions mostly south america, and the caribbean affected by the zika virus where there are active cases right now, you can contact the airlines, american and united are being very accommodating. they will let you change your flight, cancel your flight, postpone your flight, what have you, at no additional cost, because they understand that there is worry, especially among pregnant women about going to these areas where you can contract this disease and then pass it onto your baby. thousands of babies born mostly in brazil with brain defects because of it. >> amy: if you have stock in weight watchers right now you right? >> reporter: yeah, this is unbelievable. winfrey. she sent out a tweet saying i eat bread every single day and i lost 26 pounds.
9:29 am
>> reporter: on weight watchers program. so weight watchers stock was up 20% yesterday. it adds $150 million in value to the company. why that's important because if you break that down by each pound that oprah lost, she is worth $5 million per pound. you can say that, right? she is an investor in the company. she sits on the board. i would disappear. i would disappear for you at $5 million a pound. >> amy: eating bread every day? that's impressive, actually, right? >> reporter: it is. her weight fluctuates, but the fact that you send something out on social mediaen an it moves a company's stock price that much, 20%. >> amy: maybe she could do that with some of the other stock that aren't doing so well right now. >> reporter: i know. >> amy: i love it. all right. good stuff. we'll see you later. you can catch lauren each weekday morning on the fox business network.
9:30 am
business.com/channel finder. >> jayme: not even oprah can stop these rain drops. it has been a wet one today. it looks like again wave of rain number one goes that way. number two, is doing a reload over the gulf coming this way towards central florida, eventually knocking on the door as we approach about midday into the early afternoon, and overnight the chances still look rather bloated and rather large now as highs 90 to 100%, and that rain category department. it is going to be a wet one. here is what's playing out. watching this next cluster here developing, storm prediction center in oklahoma has given us an outline, marginal risk of severe weather around here, with this particular batch moving in. it looks like the ingredients and dynamics, the energy in that cluster more clout than first wave of rain. we're going to watch that here. also far southwestern florida and into the lower keys we stand

wind gusts when it's all said and done. i'm watching it all. we'll be here with you for the next half hour at the 10:00 a.m. time frame. you can join the conversation today and also we take the news online with our noon show for you at 12:00 straight up. join us. 64 orlando. 62 gainesville, 72 in melbourne, rain likely, couple of isolated storms move in. looks like highs today make a run towards 70ish. 66 by 8:00 tonight. our forecast for the next seven, down we go in temps. ample sunshine for the weekend. we'll talk more about that forecast for you coming up in ten more minutes. >> john: thanks a lot. gun control is a hot button issue in the heated political season. the issue is also heating up in your doctor's office. the surgeon general says gun ownership is a public health issue and the american academy of pediatrics says it is a
9:32 am
patients about gun safety. the ongoing legal battle has called docks versus gloucks. a surgeon with georgia hospital joins us. this is -- i mean one it's a political issue, gets people divided, and i like having you here because you're a normal guy. you're a doctor. what are your thoughts? if somebody -- should you be doing this? >> i tell you, with any conversation there are two sides. i can see this side of the people who would say we should be doing it. why? it's 32,000 people killed each year on the discharge of firearms. and that makes it a public health issue. there is about 30,000 automobile accidents. now, on the other side, i can see that too, because i'm the doctor having to do all this stuff. i have to do domestic violence. i have to do drug addiction. i have to do all these things and now you're going to put on
9:33 am
get a quality visit in, i have to now survey and talk to people about gun safety. >> john: i'm sure you thought about that. how do you open up that discussion? i don't even know how as a doctor you would say okay you're here for a sore throat, let me talk to you about guns. i don't know how you would have that discussion. >> exactly. that's a very slippery slope. now, for me, the first step is i see something bulging out of the side of your pants that looks like a firearm, i'm going to have a conversation, all right? >> john: absolutely. >> that's not the usual. what i think is more usual is that there is a mother that is -- a gun is coming to the home and the mother is concerned about how should we have safety profiles around that gun, or dad wants the young child of 12 to now start shooting a weapon. and i mean i may get asked and i think the more natural thing is
9:34 am
if the patient brings up that subject we're obligated to discuss it. >> john: what would you say? i don't know if you're a gun guy or not. if somebody comes to me and says we're thinking about starting shooting what's your advice, like be careful? i don't know what you would say. say. i would alert them to the figures, okay, the data. the data is everything about that this is a dangerous situation. how many people are killed. and the second step i would do is i would refer them to the many organizations that do a great job at gun safety. and those are the -- that's the 1-2 punch i would try to give. >> john: how do you avoid this becoming a political issue? because now all of a sudden you just went through political issues in the doctor's office. obamacare, right? i'm sure that became political. this is the same kind of situation, right? >> it's a similar situation because it's an emotional situation. there are very strong feelings generated over guns, and our rights to have guns.
9:35 am
going to be a conversation, if i aish payent is going to have a conversation with their doctor about the gun, you should set limits. and that limit should be about safety information only. do not let this degenerate into a constitutional debate or gio political quagmire. >> john: because you're not there for that. >> no. and this could disrupt the doctor patient relationship, because we start exploring gio political issues, in a place where there should be no politics, it soils the doctor patient relationship and quite frankly that is the most important thing for good health care outcomes. >> john: the take away, what do you want them to realize? >> i want them to realize that first of all doctors cannot cure all the ills of the world. giving legislation requiring doctors to do more when we can't get a good exam done has ramifications.
9:36 am
9:38 am
gorgeous wedding pictures. ryan, hope i didn't give away too much. >> reporter: a lot of people questioning why chris christie hit the presidential campaign trail this weekend instead of visiting towns. christie said do you want me to go down there and mop? shouldn't have said that. look at this. mopster christie, that is an expensive mop, is it not? all funds go towards buying mops. 190 bucks already. >> john: i get a kick out of when they say what are you doing about it governor? really, he has done what he can do. >> amy: he organizes the people that can help him. that's part of the balance you have to do when you're running for another office, but you were still holding an office.
9:39 am
off and i had to drop kolton off school and my hair was soaking wet. i had clothes on but i wasn't looking my best. >> john: okay. you have seen the same thing i'm talking about. >> amy: yeah, i have. i seen people who work here wear slippers. it's all about comfort. >> the worse is when you get out of the car and for whatever reason you have to get out. >> amy: if you're just doing the whole, you know, open up the door get out little johnny then yeah. >> put your day wear on and you'll be set. let's see. here is jayme king. >> jayme: here we go. we got you, your 60s now, 72 down in melbourne and the otherville at 72. equal playing field jury where.
9:40 am
