9:06 am
any other candidate on stage. now, across town, at that debate, his absence actually left room for his rivals. last night florida senator marco rubio defended his stance on immigration. >> number one we're going to keep isis out of america. if we don't know who you are or why you're coming you will not get into the united states. number two we're going to enforce our immigration laws. i am the son and grandson of immigrants, and i know that securing our borders is not anti-immigrant and we will do it. >> the other florida candidate spoke about the establishment label people have given him. >> this election is not about our pedigree, this is an election about people that are really hurting. and we need a leader that will fix things and have a proven record to do it and we need someone who will take on hillary clinton in november. >> now, as the debate was going on, donald trump held his rally just three miles down the road. his event was sold out.

$6 million for wounded veterans. meanwhile, the democrats are also trying to drum up support ahead of the iowa caucuses monday. hillary clinton held a town hall in newton, iowa yesterday. she went after those gop candidates and vowed to be tough on wall street. bernie sanders is denying claims by clinton supporters who claim he's recruiting college students from other states to break the law and caucus in iowa. be sure to stay with fox 35 for the latest on you decide 2016, the iowa cause uses as we said are coming up monday, and we will have live coverage from the hawkeye state. back to you. >> john: interesting cruz and rubio dominated the talk time, almost 14 minutes, carson only spoke four minutes. >> amy: he tends to be quieter. health alert, the zika virus still spreading. the cdc says it's in 23 countries and counting. >> john: we hear more about this because it's linked to birth defects.
9:08 am
other countries are certainly impacted, as well. the world health organization estimates three to 4 million peopamericas could be exposed to the virus in the next 12 months. there are 31 cases of zika infections that have been reported among u.s. citizens who traveled to those impacted areas. three of those cases as we said are in florida. the government is responding to that threat. >> there are certainly reasons to be concerned about this disease. and i think that explains the federal response has been mobile iized by the united states. >> john: the health experts are warning pregnant women against travel to several popular southern american destination. you should avoid barbados and the u.s. virgin islands to name a view. one of the hardest parts about having a baby, of course, is thinking of the name, depending on who you ask, i'm sure.

@ >> amy: welcome back. we've known antioxidants are like a super food for your health but new research says antioxidants are great unless you have cancer. research found that antioxidants turbo charged cancer cells, making them grow and even spread. joining us this morning to calm things down a little bit, dawn. great to see you.
9:14 am
holy cow, this is really scary. especially if you have cancer and you have been loading up on antioxidants thinking they're helping you. >> right. it's an alarming study that has come out. the study was in mice, didn't look at humans yet, but they separated the mice into two groups, one group they didn't give any kind of treatment to, the other group they did give supplements. it's a common antioxidant found in bodybuilding supplement. that's the key, they're not talking about foods. they're talking about supplements. >> amy: which would be what? >> all of the fruits and vegetables will have different antioxidants, and whole grains, the teas, flack seed, nuts and seeds have different types and different amounts of antioxidants. vitamin a, vitamin c, vitamin e those will have the antioxidants in them. >> amy: okay. the key in the study, and i think this is interesting, is that they use supplements and
9:15 am
judge whether or not it's the same. >> right. exactly. so the type of cancer they use was melanoma, skin cancer. they noticed the skin cancer acts the same way in rats as they do in humans. but we have another factor here. we're talking about supplements with a high dose of antioxidants that's not in the natural form versus food that is in natural form, other factors that go into the food, how you cook it or if you eat it raw or with fat, with protein. those play into how our body uses the vitamins and minerals. it's hard to equate that to humans, just from the rats. >> amy: one of the things we were talking about, the antioxidants, we don't understand how they know which cells to gravitate to so they may not understand the difference between a healthy cell and cancer cell, it's just empowering the cell. >> and antioxidant purpose, the whole job is to protect that cell from the free radicals that are really bad and cause damage
9:16 am
what's happening, when a cancer cell moves to another part of the body, it's a really kind of hard traveling, you know, thing for the cell to do. so it starts to become a little bit more weak and fragile, so that antioxidant comes in and stronger. is that what is showing in the rats. >> amy: so what do you recommend to people at home watching this? >> always food first. always get any kind of vitamins and minerals from your food first. i have never recommended for any cancer patients to take any kind of high antioxidant supplement or multivitamin. not only because of this but it could interfere with some treatments that you're taking, your chemo, radiation. so always try to get your foods first. cancer prevention is different than when you have cancer. so even more so before you get the cancer, get your food in first to get all those good vitamins and minerals. >> amy: you're so good.
9:17 am
always a pleasure. thank you. we appreciate your time. it is 9:16 right now. let's find out how things are looking outside. >> jayme: yes, ma'am. dawn, good to see you. let's talk about our satellite as we are seeing cloud cover shifting out towards our south and southeast. and this is yielding ample sunshine all day long. let's talk about the rain over the last two days. i got the amounts at orlando, daytona beach and melbourne. pretty chunky amounts overall. we a couple times have set daily rainfall records through the last couple two or three days. you can see, good morning ryan, good morning folks, you can see here that for the month, this is where we stand for the month of january and it's going to be i think cashing in on one of the wetter januaries we have seen around these parts in some time. let's move into the latest and greatest in your current temperatures. 48 ocala, 52 orlando. widespread 50s all up and down the east side of the coastal areas now.
9:18 am
low 50s, looks like palm coast at about 47. and many degrees of cooling, 24-hour temperature switch up has been great. and northwest winds are up and up. indicative of a cold front sliding through. you can see what it means for the day ahead. sunshine returns, real nice day, 66 by 2:00, by 5:00 for the drive home 61. we'll have bright sunshine, roll down the windows as you know you're going to be stuck on i-4 somewhere. clear, cool and crisp, 49 by 2:00 a.m., 47 by 5:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. temps around 50 degrees. let's talk about the nation now as we see snowflakes flying. the very, very typical and i guess for late january i would call it expected locations. stacking up around the great lakes, lake-effect snow going here out of buffalo, new york. the other side of the earth, the other side of the connected states, big storm ramping up in the pacific northwest. we get a taste of what i think by about midweek of next week, and that should raise the rain
9:19 am
on the back end of next week it will drop temperatures yet again. so for today, widespread 60s for you. what you see is what you get. that's all. again we'll be warmer in the coming days, so hang tight. looks like we're 40s and upper tear 30s in gains veal and ocala. patchy frost in alachua county towards the florida, georgia line. warming, yes, we're about 80 come monday and tuesday, and again the next best chance of rainfall around here will set up wednesday and thursday. severe weather we're not too sure but i think some scattered showers and isolated storms may be in the offing during that time. amy, with us from orange county animal services. you're doing the -- you're doing twirls here. this dog is running all over you. how are you? sorry about your snow boarding injury there. >> all good. >> jayme: let's talk about our pooch of the day. who do we have? >> this is sienna. she came to us as a stray. >> jayme: obviously a mixed breed.
9:20 am
do you know the breed? >> we're not sure because she came as a stray but she is super sweet and friendly. she is a pretty calm dog. >> jayme: she loves ryan large with eelijah with a. i'm just saying, ryan, this dog really likes you. would make a great family pet, great disposition on this particular animal. very good stuff. one of the great things you allow out there, folks come down, you have a private room where you can make sure they're a good fit for the family. >> it's only $20.16 to adopt for the month of january. and that includes spaying, neuter, vaccination and microchip. >> jayme: i love it. there is your info on the tv screen. let's find this dog a home today, not tomorrow, not sunday. this friday. >> super friendly dog. >> jayme: this dog needs to climb in your bed and keep you warm because it's chilly tonight just saying.

9:23 am
we're a local team here based in daytona beach, visit florida. we're a favorite, but seems like a time ago since 2010 i won, and every year gets more frustrating. a little bit more determined. it's been a great couple days in central florida. we're looking forward to getting the number 90 up front and the race tomorrow. >> reporter: people who have appreciation for what this is about their jaws drop when i tell them they race for 24 hours straight. how long are you behind the wheel? >> usually try to do about three hours per driver. most teams will have four drivers. we're doing three. so we had -- trying to keep it strong, but now we -- we feel good about the three guys. we feel that we're stronger with
9:24 am
might get three hours on, typically that means six hours off but doesn't work that i with a. we have to have down time. we go back to the pits, so three in, three out. >> reporter: starts at 2:40 tomorrow afternoon. what's your favorite time to drive? >> sunshine coming up. that's the -- it's a long not time in dau start 2:40, but when the sun comes up, kind of gives you that second wind. if you're still running it's pretty exciting. i have been lucky, come together the last minute for daytona rising, and the job he's done here. i think it is the best facility in the world. hopefully people will come out. it's going to be a good event.

9:26 am
9:27 am
>> john: glad you're with us. >> amy: we want to get you caught up on headlines right now that have happened so far this morning. an arson investigation and shooting happened just down the street from each other in ormond beach. it started just before midnight on river drive. volucia rescue said they were called out to a house fire when they found a body lying in the road. we're told no one was inside that house. deputies believe the person who was in the road died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> john: the marion county sheriff says he is appalled after five of his deputies are charged in a brutal arrest. this happened in august of 2014. this is newly released surveillance video showing the deputies kicking and hitting derrick price. this is what price looked like the day of his arrest. the sheriff says seeing that video was upsetting. >> it was very disheartening. you see what took place and i was saddened by it, also i was upset by it, and i can just tell

9:30 am
