tv   Good Day 8am  FOX  February 5, 2016 8:00am-9:00am EST

8:00 am
>> amy: . >> announcer: it's 8:00 a.m. from fox 35, this is "good day orlando." >> john: it is friday, february 5th. "good day orlando," i'm john brown. >> amy: i'm amy kaufeldt. it is the reason we are wearing red today, heart health month and today we all show our support, and raise awareness and we hope you wear red, too. the stories we're working on right now. first we are about half-hour
8:01 am
at the cape. you be see the rocket there, on the pad and we'll have a love report, coming up. >> john: we'll head live to mt. dora with a preview of the huge arts festival this weekend. okay, ready for this number? 250 to 300,000 people expected to be there. >> amy: i'm going! >> john: that is a lot of people. >> amy: and a local girl featured in "rolling stone" magazine is going to sing for us in our 8 o'clock hour this morning, you don't want to miss it. i got to hear a little bit of her yesterday and she's really good. plus, david martin. >> reporter: good morning, amy, hi, john, we're live at the beautiful holy trinity greek orthodox church -- say it three times! i can't! hey, but these are beautiful tables, extraordinary tables, calling it tables extraordinaire. i don't know what it is but we'll put it together on the 8 o'clock hour of... >> "good day orlando"!
8:02 am
>> john: my wife and david martin are talking behind my back. my wife came in for lunch and she said you needed to have david do this and i goes they spoke. >> amy: david does it. >> john: something greek. all i know. >> amy: baklava. >> jayme: how about saganaki? cheese on fire. >> john: let's do it today. >> jayme: in the back of the weather center, she'll tell us what that is. our sky scape now as we are mainly clear, we have cleared things out. the temperatures have taken a big drop out there. let's come back and take a live look at what is going on with 30s and 40s, now and made their way into north central florida and east central florida, so, sun returns, cool and breezy, 59 by 2:00, here's a live look here, what is going on, at i-drive, and this is our orlando tower cam high atop the hyatt
8:03 am
looking back at the city things are clear but on the cool side. clear because the clouds now moved offshore bye-bye, see you later! as we see ample sunshine in place, today. a nice day overall. the weekend, that is up for debate. we have/rain chance tomorrow and it peaks saturday night at 50%, a lot higher along the beaches, and sunday it is all gone and ample sun returning and notice we stick and stay through the 50s and 60's for highs in the overnights and around, 44 by monday morning and down the 30s by next wednesday morning, that's your forecast. here's gina. >> hi there, happy friday. we do have a new crash, though, this one here on north ranger road and aloma avenue, you can see there is a roadblock there, causing significant delays in both directions. on aloma. use caution if you are there. not far away, we have an earlier crash, goldenrod at the 408, still causing delays there, all of that is off to the shoulder. still causing quite a mess, just this morning.
8:04 am
westbound, from lake mary to colonial, takes you 20 minutes, right now. i-4 eastbound from those attractions to downtown, takes you 19 minutes, and on the 408, the 417 to downtown, takes you about 16 minutes, right now, that's it for live drive traffic. back to you. >> amy: thanks. >> john: developing right now, we're just about a half-hour away from a rocket launch at the cape. >> amy: you you united launch alliances will send it into space this morning and we are at cape canaveral air force station. how are things looking out there? it is windy in orlando, how are things on the cape this morning? >> the same thing out here. we are dealing with winds and that factored into an issue here. with whether or not we get the launch off today. we're at the cape canaveral air force station. behind me is launch complex 41. an atlas v rocket on the pad and at the moment we're dealing with a 30% chance of launch, at this time. earlier it was 40% and we have decreased it. though the clouds have completely cleared out of here
8:05 am
look out over the banana river you can see the tops of the river and effect the wind is having on it as we push out towards the launch pad. they are blowing around 20 knots at the cape. and launch managers want to make sure that it is this direction of these winds that is the issue and kind of fickle at this moment. they have a tolerance level of around 24 knots and we have seen gust up to 25 knots and it is riding that line, and they basically don't want the rocket to move around when it gets up off of the tower and hits any structures around the rocket there. the mission today, the 12th and final upgraded gps satellite for the u.s. military and civilian uses. looking at video from the 11th satellite to launch on an atlas v and the satellites are more precise for the digital devices but more accurate location tracking and are more resistant to jamming, another potential hostile activity is the u.s.
8:06 am
countries looking at technology to do our satellite some harm. these are far more resistant and again, as far as the launch is concern, people who are viewing it, it is a little chilly and windy out. and we'll find out and see if those winds will be an impact on the overall launch. again launching at 8:38. about a 20 minute window. which gives us roughly three chances to get the rocket off under good, favorable wind conditions. now we're live at the cape canaveral air force station, fox 35 news. >> amy: all right, thanks, orange county deputies say an innocent by stander has been shot after a man was ambushed by a gunman, it happened just before 2:00 at a restaurant on orange blossom trail and there was an argument inside the restaurant that happened earlier in the evening and then later, when a man involved in the argument was leaving the restaurant, several gunmen opened fire outside. and he was shot in the leg and another man who was an innocent by stander was also shot. both are expected to survive.
8:07 am
>> john: also new, a proposed ordinance to put an end to discrimination against the lgbt community has been shot down in palm bay. >> amy: it was voted down after hours of debating, a meeting that lasted until about 1:00 this morning. luanne is here with more on that. >> good morning, yeah, the meeting drew a passionate crowd. more than 500 palm bay residents showed up to voice their opinions on the proposed human rights ordinance. intended to protect the lgbt community. now, here's the gist of that ordinance, its intention was to protect the rights of the lgbt community, at work, in housing, and, in public buildings as well. the 25 page ordinance detailed specifics about allowing transgender people to use the restroom they most identified with. schools and churches would have been exempt from the ordinance. we caught up with community leaders, following the ordinance being vote down. -- voted down. >> it was overwhelm to see so many people come out.
8:08 am
passionate in the city and they care. and they wanted to make sure they voiced their opinion. >> luanne: now, one city council member simply put it this way: they said this ordinance was written like a solution in search of a problem. after more than 6 hours of discussion, the mayor and three council members voted against it. john? amy, back to you. >> john: you decide 2016. the gloves coming off during last night's democratic debate in new hampshire, ryan joins us with the fireworks. >> ryan: they have been hiding these democratic debates on the weekends, and last night did it on the weekday in primetime. and the sparks were flying. hillary clinton and bernie sanders trading blows over a here's one of the more heated moments from last night. >> arguing about definitions. let's talk about -- let's talk about -- yes, you do and one of the things we should do is not walk. >> if we get into labels it wasn't progressive to vote against the brady bill five
8:09 am
i don't think it was progressive to vote to give gun makers immunity. >> secretary clinton represents the establishment. >> i have to jump in here, because honestly, bernie sanders is the only person who i think would characterize me a woman running to be the first woman president as exemplifying the establishment. >> being part of the establishment is in the last quarter, having a super pac that raised $15 million from wall street. >> i think it is time to end very artful smear you and your campaign have been carrying out in recent weeks and let's talk... let's talk about the issues. >> the crowd booing hillary clinton there. look at the poll, bernie sanders leading in new hampshire, most by wide margins and every poll has him on top and the cnn poll has him with a 31 point lead in new hampshire. and fox 35 is taking an in-depth
8:10 am
to the florida primary saturday morning, 7:30, our sister station, my 65 and see saturday night at 11:00 on fox 35 and tuesday they votes in new hampshire. >> amy: thanks, coming up a quarter million people are about to descend on a small central florida town! >> john: taking you live to mt. dora for the arts fest when we come back. plus, good morning, david! >> reporter: john, amy, what does your dining room table look like? chances are it looks nothing like the gorgeous 30-plus tables here at tables extraordinaire. an event that you can check out today, and tomorrow. my friends, how are youis morning? >> well, thank you for having us. >> what is table extraordinaire. >> reporter: different table scapes and each more imaginative than the next and over-the-top designs, amazing, have to see them.
8:11 am
>> amy: wow, it will be cool, a rocket launch is scheduled for 8:38 this morning, and darrell says the wind is a factor out on the cape this morning. so, we are keeping an eye on that and telling jayme to hold the wind factor, if at all possible. he says he's doing his best. >> john: jayme never held the
8:12 am
>> jayme: that is funny, john! i'll be here all weekend, mt. dora, one of the two... >> amy: it is -- i wondered what that was and now i know. thanks. all right. this weekend... a quarter million people are going to be descending on the town of mt. dora. >> john: and they are there for one thing, art -- actually not one thing, there is great food over there as well and this is one of my favorite events of the year. >> amy: it will be fun. >> john: andrea jackson is there, what, two hours before the party starts. what do you have for us? >> reporter: well this is it, you guys, the 41st annual mt. dora arts festival happening this weekend. check out this cover, tim guard dis -- tim gardis, his art is used for the guide and it will be a huge weekend, as you said up to a quarter million people, possibly more and i'll introduce you to christina rosenberg, the pr marketing master, good morning to you! >> good morning.
8:13 am
>> this weekend, we have a variety of different things happening here at the arts festival from art smart, the free art seminars, which is explaining to people what are they looking for, when it comes to different types of art mediums and purchases at the arts festival. >> this is great, if you are a first time art gore ore buyer it gives you the edge, right. >> yes. it is nice to have that kind of information when you are looking for purchasing the art work. we have a free kids zone area kids can create free art projects and it is great tor all ages and entertainment, jazz music, we also have and brainer from new york's broadway. and, of course we have food, and over 280 exhibiting artists. >> reporter: this year you expect a bigger crowd than ever before. why is that? >> yes are hoping for a bigger crowd because it is this first year we decided to do digital
8:14 am
larger target and demographic. >> reporter: what are we talking... >> hoping for 300,000! >> reporter: somehow i think you will get it. with the number comes parking and that is always an issue when you bring 300,000 people to the lakeside community. what can people expect when it comes to parking? >> we advise to get here early and have three designated areas for shuttles, so, a shuttle is getting to a designated parking lot, that we have. which is at mt. dora, christian academy and the triangle center, and mt. dora high school, and, includes a round trip shuttle. and we advise a few boats in the area to boat in as well. >> reporter: good, we'll talk to you more a little later about what else is available at the festival. now we're in mt. dora, i'm andrea jackson, and we'll send it back to you in the studio. >> john: all right, thanks, guys. >> amy: 8:16. let's find out how windy it is in the weather center. jayme king. >> jayme: not so much, the cape,
8:15 am
i see, i see! i heard it is a trap. the atlas v going up and, this rocket -- hopefully we hear that and see that. temperatures, a 53 to 55 and darrell is at the launch and, we are getting closer to launch time and lunch time where temperatures should close in on 60 degrees and 38 gainesville and 39 ocala and pretty much 40s for the remainder of us, winds are up and up, cranking pretty darned good, along the space coast, dead north wind now, call that a side shore breeze, and blow from north to the south and can miss with the trajectory and path of the rocket as it goes up. don't call the ballgame. it would be nice to see it go up. hopefully.
8:16 am
by 5:00 solid 50s, you can see the clearing trend we are embarking on for today. that sunshine will be rather plentiful and comes back pretty good today and by tonight the clouds continue to thicken and rain chances are rising. and it looks like by tomorrow we'll start the day off okay. and i think closer to noon the chance of rain at 30 or 40% and tomorrow night more rainfall potential overpresent the region as the low pressure moves across the eastern side of the state. the highest projection of rain now the chance will be along the space coast and toward coastal volusia county with chances in the range of 60 to 70% and wrapping it up now, the 7-day forecast, shows us the numbers and they are cool, with 50s and 60s for highs and overnights down to the 40s, that's your forecast. gina? >> gina: happy friday, a quiet morning out there, for the most part. good news there and looking now at your drive times, i-4 westbound, looks great. lake mary boulevard to colonial, limits you to 18 minutes on i-4 eastbound, and attractions to

>> announcer: you're watching "good day orlando" on fox 35. >> welcome back to "good day orlando," we are about 8 minutes away now from the rocket launch on the cape this morning, it is great, brought to you by unite launch alliance and we have a 20 minute window they've been talking about and weather conditions right now, a 60% chance a go, but it looks beautiful. >> a beautiful morning along the coast today. and again, you know, it is -- obviously not clouds, the big issue but it is about the winds and we'll check in with jayme king, at mission control right now hoping for the best.
8:27 am
>> you mentioned the winds, john, and that is critical indeed and what is happening now is more of a pure and true north to south wind direction blowing out of the knot and along the eastern edge of the cape and the kennedy space center and when it happens it toils once the rocket messes with the trajectory, the path of the rocket and when you complete mission upgrade. as the wind cranks up and hovel they get that up and u7 and a breezy to locally windy scene and how it plays out behind the strong cold front and temperatures, 30s, gainesville and ocala and 40s, south of that and we factor in the winds and had a windchill to contend with and take a light jacket and we are clearing out, behind the front and dropping southbound through the southeastern bahamas now, moving far removed from central florida and south
8:28 am
today, returns, 59 by 2:00 and cool and breezy by 5:00 and 58 and 54 by 8:00 and notice i've handed -- added clouds and bringing back the rain chance, 30%, early as we approach the noon hour and higher overnight, saturday into sunday and, 50% and much higher along the coast and better area wide and high 60s and lows around 44. that is your forecast. over to you, gina. >> gina: it has been quiet, we have a new crash, this is here on alafaya trail at lake underhill road. no roadblock, causing delays and be aware if you are there. a look at drive times, looking okay, i-4 from lake mary to colonial, takes 16 minutes, and now on i-4 eastbound, attractions to downtown, 20 and on the 408, 417 to downtown takes you 13 minutes. that's it for live drive
8:29 am
>> john: developing, senator bill nelson asking president obama to appoint a zika czar as a number of confirmed cases continues to grow. >> a 12th case was reported in florida yesterday, and the person was in broward county an broward is added to the list of counties under a public health emergency. there are now five counties including hillsborough and governor scott is working with the centers for disease control and prevention to provide additional testing kits to catch the virus early on and prevent it from spreading. the governor says there are ways we can all help. >> make sure there is no standing water, no standing water around your house and you will be outside, you know -- use represent lent. one in five will show symptoms and most are mild. pregnant women are the ones who are highest risk. and, because of the danger of birth defects. >> ucf students and staff will

were compromised or stolen. the university is sending out letters today notifying 63,000 students and staff that hackers stole their social security numbers and the university says they first found out about the hack last month and the fbi is investigating and warning other colleges in an effort to identify other potential victims. >> amy: orlando is named a top city for job growth. the career builder study says orlando added over 50,000 jobs from 2014 to 2015, nearly double the amount of new jobs expected. based on previous years data, dallas in texas was number one. into happening now, four minutes away from the rocket launch over at the cape. >> and, they are looking to send the atlas v at 8:38 and they have a 20 minute window and a lot depends on the weather now and is joining us live at cape canaveral air force station. we see the white caps behind you
8:31 am
there. >> it is windy and that is because -- the are concerned otherwise the weather looks good, clear skies here and the winds helped push a big bunch of clouds offshore, and that part is not a problem. but the winds are dancing around, i'll tell you this, and i spoke with the air force and it has improved how to 60% chance for launch and i want to give you a look at the pad and the rocket on the pad. and it is carrying one of the air force's gps satellites on top and the launch as you said scheduled for 8:38 p.m., and look at the police department you can see the winds coming over the river and the effect they are having on the water and we danced around 20 knots earlier and the cut off according to the air force is 24 knots, and, so as long as we are underneath that we should be good to go, winds out of the north, a little more of a concern for a launch, because they want the rocket to avoid any structure around it.
8:32 am
foreground, you can see. one other thing i wanted to noted, looking at the picture, for those who are highly discerning launch viewers you will notice there is a structure to the left of that rocket, and that is new, to this launch pad, a crew tower where eventually, in 2017 there will be manned launches and they'll go into the space and get into the rocket and the capsule, via the structure, just off there to the left and, it is new, not in service and it's an unmanned launch but it is for use in the future and will play -- historic role of putting -- >> back out -- while you were talking we heard the air force, is giving it the go-ahead to launch and if people want to get outside quickly, they have two minutes and we hear back here, they've given it the go-ahead. into yes.
8:33 am
is clear and go. but i would say this, talking to the air force. if there is a gust we could get a hold. is it likely. >> probably not but dancing on the line and will be a real time call, so, yes, green, go for now but are keeping a close eye and we are less than two minutes away. >> amy: a couple of interesting facts about this launch, again, it is less than a man now, they are -- the actual satellite is for the united air force, global positioning system and is a guest satellite and is comprised of 24 satellites, part of the and part of 24 satellites that are at an altitude of 11,000 miles and it is fascinating when
8:34 am
the technicalities of what they are doing out there and how many actual satellites are out there. surrounding it. fascinating. >> and, our math is 15-30 seconds away. everything good? >> that's right. and, we are just a few seconds away from lift off and, it has 860,000 pounds of thrust. >> ignition. and, we have lift off of the united launch alliance, atlas v rocket carrying the 12 gps satellite for the u.s. air force. the global positioning system provides positioning, navigation, and service for
8:35 am
>> providing launch vehicle as -- ascent data. >> looking good. >> 3180 continues to perform well. and it is now complete. and it looks good. engine performance continues to look good as well. on mach 1, momentarily. mach 1. and continuing to look good.
8:36 am
booster back as expected. and signatures look good. continuing to control. >> altitude is 13 miles, down range distance, 8-and-a-half miles. and, 2200 miles-per-hour. >> performance continues to look very good. smooth. close loop steering segment. and close loop. has been enabled. >> amy: there you have it. a beautiful launch. everything is looking great.
8:37 am
looking into space, the united launch alliance atlas v headed to outer space, and touch and go out there this morning based on the wind conditions. and, they were able to make it happen. >> john: let's bring darrell in. i know -- you were about to interview someone out there with good in sight into this mission. are they still around or do you have somebody else there? 123450 i have lieutenant colonel thomas st. marie. a beautiful launch we watched, getting to see the sunrise and the morning launches are the best. what do you think about it? >> absolutely, i thought it was gorgeous, one of those things i like is, when it gets up to altitude and sometimes you can see the condensation, coming out of the plume and it was a clear day and the shadow of the sin is
8:38 am
picture-perfect launch from cape canaveral air force station. >> and the evening launch, too, sometimes they light up the sky, absolutely gorgeous and what a great day on the cape. >> it is indeed and the mission is interesting. earlier. this completes a round of gps satellites that are critical to the u.s. air force's military resilience from attack and also, civilian usage? >> absolutely, so, 31 satellites in the global positioning system now with nine spares and a lot of capability out there and the u.s. military, a lot of great military codes available on this satellite and also, second civilian signal, safety of life signal, available as well and the most advanced atomic clocks we have for stability of the signal and really, gps has become a global utility. and it is out there for the entire world to use, and it is integrated into our daily lives in ways that folks may not know.
8:39 am
grandmother's house for thanksgiving dinner and also there is a timing signal on board that you use to synchronize computer networks, banking transactions, cell phone towers, and you know, our satellite link we're using on the news, absolutely. uses that gops timing signal -- gps timing signal to sy everything up. >> hard to imagine life without thank you very much, lieutenant colonel for joining us. >> a pleasure, thank you. >> beautiful launch and we'll have more wrap-up as we get later into the news for the evening newscast, and again, the successful launch of an atlas v rocket with the gps satellite has yet to put it into orbit and we expect to have that happen soon. now, live at cape canaveral air force station, fox 35 news. >> amy: all right, good stuff. fascinating launch. beautiful and i'm sure it was prettier being up close to it.
8:40 am
