7:41 am
and they say, but if you open up our credit card, you'll get 20% and you spend $300, so you'll save this much money. you think, oh. it's very tempting. >> you don't want to do that. if you shop frequently at one shopping store, it's okay to get a card to get 20% off, about you you'll end up running your score. it won't run up with the different inquiries. let's go back to the extreme crediting. >> okay. >> what that is, to me it's like a financial russian roulette. you open up a dozen credit cards in a given year, you use it, pay it off, bill up points, use the card, pay it off, that's the idea. they say increasing your credit availability and that usage and paying it off increase dz your score. i really don't believe that. i mean, i haven't tried it obviously. when you open up that many credit cards and you have much available limit, that's not a
7:42 am
remember in 2008, people maxed out and defaulted. the other thing is, what if you miss a payment? that's a negative f you miss a payment, that's a negative. all the fees that comes with the credit cards, but the worse thing is the inquiries. when you have a hard inquiry, which is a loan or a credit card you apply for, that drops your score a couple of points. >> okay. >> so you have to figure you'll drop your score a few points for each card you open, then how much are you really going to build your credit back up? you don't have a guarantee that you're going to build it up another five points per card, no one will tell you what that is. to me, i think it's financial russian roulette and i wouldn't try it because who needs to take that kind of a risk. you want to build your score. what i recommend doing make sure you pay your bills on time. if you pay your credit card and can't play pay it off early, you can't pay the whole thing off,
7:43 am
and pay it early, that looks better on your score. and only use maybe up to 50% of your available limit. >> that's a big one. >> that is huge. they look at that more so than the amount of available credit. that can be a negative. >> if you're maxed out on every card, it's a bad sign. >> exactly. those are negatives. there's so many things you can do to increase your score, like paying everything on time, paying early, not having too much in credit, and also the span between the time that you apply for credit. so i think every adult should have at least two major credit cards, and maybe one department store card. you don't really need much more than that. >> you're good. >> you don't need a gas card, each individual store you shop at. >> right, right. >> they're out. i will tell you shopping in the last week, i was probably asked to open a credit card at five different vendors. they're out. >> they're so testimonying. >> don't do it. just say no. >> maybe give it up for lent. >> i like that idea.
