. happy birthday if it is your birthday today. if it is your birthday, you're celebrating with dakota fanning turns 22. and our good friend phil rawlins is having a birthday today, but he won't tell us how old he is. >> no. and he's a celebrity here. on the health watch, more than 6 million kids suffer from adhd is in the united states. >> now a new study from florida international university suggests that parents might be to blame. after looking add more than 500 families, the concept is that children are less likely to out grow those adhd symptoms if their parents criticize them a lot. researchers say their goal isn't to judge the parents, but they hope the study will encourage them to overcome those highly critical behaviors.

p. well, i think that coping mechanisms definitely take place. and if the child gets a good educational background, they can definitely function quite well. and so if you look at adhd, and i have one child with it, they actually do very, very well. there are some issues, certainly. but when you think about what they're saying in the study, i have to really go back and say, look, there was no cause and effect relationship established with this. they're finding a correlation to it, so it doesn't mean that those critical parents caused them to not out grow the adhd. in fact, we don't know if those kids were more severe and those parents were more challenged than the other parents. we don't know those things. we also know it's kind of a group of parents, 70 to 80 % were white, boys, and they had the inattentive hyperactivity type of adhd. so it was a certain group of kids that they were looking at.

through this, what advice do you give to other parents? >> i think really getting help and my son wasn't recognized until really late, you know, like college. so i think that just trying to figure out what it is, how it occurs, getting help, getting psychological help. but i think that the critical nature of some of the these parents, honestly might reflect back on them in some way, that they may need help, as well. and i would say seek it out. definitely seek it out. and ask your school. there's psychologists. there's educational specialists. there's all sorts of people that can help you overcome it. you know, i was certainly lucky because my son didn't have that hyperactivity portion of it and he was very, very bright. so we did well. but other parents, you know, they're struggling a lot more. >> yeah, it's certainly not easy. that's for sure. we know that. all right, dr. jo. always good to see you. thanks for the great advice. we appreciate your time. before we go, we have big changes coming our way.
