tv   Countdown To The Primary  FOX  March 5, 2016 11:00pm-11:30pm EST

11:00 pm
. >> donald trump is a phony, a fraud. his promises are as worthless as a degree from trump university. >> countdown to the florida primary. the race for the white house sets its sites on the sunshine state. >> it's going to be close, no doubt about it. >> there are clear frontrunners. >> look at this winning a lot, folks. get used to it. >> now this moves forward, the crescent city, the motor city, and beyond. >> the others say they'll fight to the finish. >> don't worry about it. >> gentlemen, we are the
11:01 pm
beaten donald trump once, and twice, three times. >> are you ready to be heard? you decide 2016. >> welcome. >> people in five states voted today with caucuses in kansas, kentucky, maine, and nebraska, and a primary in louisiana. >> in kansas, ted cruz is projected to win. donald trump got about 23 percent with marco in third. bernie sanders and hillary clinton >> ted cruz lost by about 4 percentage points. very close there. >> in louisiana, voters for both parties are holding primaries. donald trump has been declared the projected
11:02 pm
the gap over ted cruz is just 5 percent. for them, hillary clinton has been declared the winner, topping bernie sanders with about 9 percent of the vote already in. >> in maine, ted cruz winning, getting almost 46 percent of the votes. donald trump finishing 2nd, at a little more than 32 percent. >> in nebraska, bernie sanders has been declared the winner there, taking 55 percent of the vote. we are watching all races. we have more from new orleans. >> reporter: five states holding presidential primaries. ted cruz won in kansas. >> if donald wins, in all likelihood hillary wins. we have to come together. >> reporter: donald trump looking to extend his lead in the fractious g.o.p. states. >> i watched the other day
11:03 pm
"well, donald will not win." i mean, this guy's got so many problems, i don't think he will come close to his own state. >> conservatism is not how loud can you be, how many ridiculous things can you say on television. >> reporter: democrats are choosing between hillary clinton and bernie sanders. >> in poll and poll including a recent cnn poll, we are beating trump in bigger numbers than hillary clinton is. >> reporter: clinton meeting with african-american ministers about the flint water crisis. >> hearing about it, i was just sick. we have to do more. >> reporter: puerto rico votes on sunday. there are crucial primaries on march 15th in ohio and florida which could make or break some of the campaigns. doug mckelway, fox news. >> the big prize in the
11:04 pm
voters in both parties head to the polls there tuesday. 59 delegates up for grabs to the republicans. a whopping 148 delegates for the democrats. >> we are just ten days away from florida's primary march 15th. florida is important because it's a winner take all state with 99 delegates at stake. >> donald trump had to stop a half dozen times as security hustled out protesters. then he made an odd comment when a woman passed out. >> we need a doctor. a doctor. we have a doctor? a woman fainted. a woman fainted. we love -- we love people that paint. >> we love people that faint. trump's speech took an hour and 11 minutes to get through with all the interruptions.
11:05 pm
for his g.o.p. competitors, a lot of rhetorics, and not a lot of specifics on policy. that is, of course, a formula that is working very well for him in the polls right now. >> marco rubio rallied voters today, bringing new mexico's governor. he didn't spend much time acknowledging donald trump, but when he did, it was to draw a contrast between trump's bluster and his own message. i'm john brown. the mitt romney factor. did his pleaing make much of a difference? >> all the proof you need to know that donald trump is, in fact, a phony. >> does he hurt or rep --

11:07 pm
>> on the twitter trail, this
11:08 pm
he wrote if trump had said four years ago the things he said today about the kkk, muslims, mexicans, disabled i would not have accepted his endorsement. >> donald trump tells us that he is very, very smart. i'm afraid that when it comes to foreign policy, he is very, very not smart. there is plenty of evidence that mr. trump is a con man, a fake. >> that was mitt romney taking to the podium thursday doing everything he could to discourage you from voting for donald trump. our power panel joins us today. always great to see you. appreciate you being here today. let's hear more of what romney had to say and we'll get your reaction. take a listen to this one. >> you say wait, wait, wait. isn't he a huge business success? doesn't he know what he's talking about?
11:09 pm
and no, he doesn't. [ applause ] look, his bankruptcies have crushed small businesses. and the men and women who worked for them. he inherited his business. he didn't create it. airlines? how about trump university? and then there's trump magazine. and trump vodka. and trump steaks. and trump mortgage. a business genius he is not. >> carl, let's start with you on this one. did romney help or hurt the gop's cause to knock donald trump down a bit? >> i think he definitely hurt it. the only thing that has helped donald trump in the last day or so is his horrible debate performance, but as far as romney is concerned he definitely hurt it. to me it seems as though the establishment, which people consider romney a part of, is totally object live just to the blood of the country. so once there was polling done
11:10 pm
86% of people said he did not hurt trump, and they didn't want to hear from romney. he was four years too late. as a matter of fact. if we would have heard romney four years ago there's no doubt in my mind romney would be the president today. >> the way i saw this play out was the people who are for trump said oh, he's a stab rushment guy. the guy against trump said he should have come out earlier. bottom line it made trump more popular with his people. you stay the gop establishment is in big trouble. what do you think about that? >> i think they're right to consider that. i think they're absolutey right to understand he frankly has underminded a great deal of their i would say efforts, i don't know how good they have been in the past, to expand the party. he has said a number of things hurtful to minority communities, to women, the disabled, as romney pointed out. i think they're right to have that fear, but there's also selfishness. they are concerned about keeping the senate, about what type of
11:11 pm
i think we have to pay attention and actually kind of look at it with a grain of salt in terms are they really concerned about the presidency as much their own positions. i will tell you hillary is enjoying watching what's going on in the circus right now. she is doing a good job of not talking about bernie sanders. she is running against an eventual republican nominee she thinks is trump. her newman tray is we don't need to make great we need to make america whole. >> before we let you go, romney called trump a phoney and liar. donald couldn't stand that without saying something. >> he failed. he was begging for my endorsement. i could have said mitt, drop to your knees. he would have dropped to his knees. he was begging. [ applause ] >> carl, is anything really going to deter the trump supporters right now? >> it may be too late, but something could. and that is if you stop doing what romney did, coming out
11:12 pm
is forcing people to stick their feet in the ground. do. merits. this is what people did not do. earlier they should have framed trump four or five years ago. he got daddy's money and he built this as a result -- they could have framed him months ago and they didn't do it. that debate performance the other night was horrific and that's what they should allow to stand. >> earns, we're out of time. appreciate you guys being here. have a great weekend. now with more on democratic side, here is bob frier. >> always good to get a good political perspective. always good to see you. you know, hillary clinton is not the first person to try and reset a campaign. jeb bush tried it, jeb can win, and we don't see jeb anymore. what did hillary do after iowa when she had that real scare? what did she do that was so successful? how was she so able to
11:13 pm
and get on the roll? >> she moved away from states that were not quite friendly to her campaign and moved to territory that was, specifically in the south. this is where you are dealing with states that are far more diverse than iowa and new hampshire. this is also a place where the clintons are originally from, arkansas, and where they performed very strongly in the polls for a long time. it's not so much hillary clinton changing much, though she changed a little, it's the dynamics of ththe race changing and shifting as they move around that's why bernie sanders is saying wait a minute, look, okay, i got drubbed in the south, i get it but the race is heading to north and midwest and that's where he thinks he can stay in the race for quite a while. >> but he's got to figure out a way to tap into what hillary clinton has really tapped into, and that's minority voters. people in the south. african american voters in particular know clinton. and trust clinton far more than they know and trust bernie sanders.
11:14 pm
make some inroads but the fact of the matter is the calendar is so compressed, you don't have a lot of time. and you're running against someone who has decades of ties, connections, and experience that certainly is paying offer. did it pay off for her super tuesday and it will continue to give her a huge advantage as the race shifts all across the nation, in particular because when you combine her delegate lead of pledged delegates she has crossed more than a thousand. >> she has to convince -- she has to walk a fine line. she has to convince them his message, which is a popular and attractive one, free health care, free college education, she has to convince them that that may not be the feasible and still come to her even though she is saying you can't have the cookie. you know what i'm saying. >> yeah, and i think she does that by trying to convince the democratic electorate that did not vote for her in the caucuses and primaries that she has
11:15 pm
and with this, i think she can mobilize more voters than not that stayed out or didn't vote for her but it's going to be difficult and part of what she does i think is embraces not just the language but the core issues that are driving the sanders campaign. and by the way, i think people on both sides of the aisle agree there are problems with campaign finance in this country. >> you always do a great job for us. we appreciate it. thank you, sir. >> believe me, he is not a leader, believe me. >> that doesn't answer the question. >> the war of words between marco rubio and donald trump
11:17 pm
11:18 pm
>> on the twitter trail from bernie sanders, the bottom line is it's more expensive to throw people in jail than to provide them with a training they need for decent paying job. >> now it's time for our good week, bad week segment. mike synan and dana jay join us. mike was at the trump camp and dana covered marco rubio. let's start with you. this is not where a lot of people expected marco rubio to be, taking cheap shots at donald trump. let's take a listen first of all. >> he has a terrible spray tan. it's the worst i've ever seen. this is a guy who can afford to get a better spray tan. he needs to sue whoever did that
11:19 pm
>> i don't care if it costs me my voice i will never allow a con artist to take control of the party of lincoln and reagan. >> okay. he took this turn recently. what are your thoughts on this one? are those remarks starting to hurt him? >> i don't know if they hurt him necessarily, but he kind of on his super tuesday night speech returned to the con man line of attack, stopped those sort of things about his tan and the hands and things like that. i think he might roll that back but continue on this line of accusing donald trump of being a con man and we'll see if that takes over the next few days and over the next couple weeks. >> it's interesting because the reason people gravitated towards marco rubio was he was the adult in the room. remember early on he was the adult there and now he's gone to trump's level some people are saying. >> some of the supporters that i spoke to at the campaign rally on tuesday night said we don't like this about marco rubio.
11:20 pm
we think he needs to play his game and win, florida his way and not stoop to trump's level, so we'll see what happen. >> trump seems to be laughing off the remarks. >> look i always liked marco until a week ago when he decided to go hostile. he decided to become don rickels, okay? don rickels has a lot mortallent. >> trump is always confident, we know that, right? what was the feeling with him? did it feel like they have this in the bag. >> he wouldn't say that he was the presumptive nominee, but you get that sort of feeling when you look at the map. i mean, who is going to stop donald trump? and where are those delegates going to come from? right now marco rubio is far, far behind. ted cruz has won three states, but those are all proportional states. so unless there is some kind of way that marco rubio can come up with winner take all states, he can't get ohio, john kasich or donald trump will get that state.
11:21 pm
campaign is over. >> we hear a lot about the gop establishment going after trump. i think they're scared at this point. >> i'll tell you this, i think if we're talking good week, bad week, marco rubio had a bad night super tuesday, only winning one condition esthe. right after that all you heard was the establishment saying we can't have trump, we can't have trump. you had mitt romney make a speech and it has sucked the oxygen away from marco rubio, from ted cruz, so they're not getting their message out there, either. so you're going to start your bad week on super tuesday and continue through at least late week when you're not getting any more attention or any chance to get your message out there. >> maybe on bad week you put the republicans in there because mike here we go again, for the past 20 i covered politics, they talk about a contested convention. they're talking about it once again today. >> if you want to talk to -- if you want to say there is a bad week for the republicans you have to look at the other side
11:22 pm
of voters that are now coming to the republican primaries, and saying this is potentially good week for the republicans and that's the argument that donald trump is trying to make is that look, i'm bringing in new voters to this party that this party hasn't seen before. i'm going to be able to win 25% of the african-american vote. that's something this party hasn't seen before. i'm winning independents at a level the party hasn't seen since reagan. and when you look at the numbers of voters in these primary, it's basically 2008 flipped over, when massive numbers of people came to the polls to vote for who would be president obama, the same thing is happening on the republican side. and many of them are coming to vote for donald trump. >> all right. nice to see you guys. thank you very much. >> you got it. >> we are whack owe birds. >> still ahead, a little campaign fun. what is a waco bird and why is ted cruz proud to be one?
11:23 pm
11:24 pm
11:25 pm
>> on the twitter trail today, hillary clinton tweeting out, how many more of these do we have to sit through? asking for a friend, gop debate. and we end today with a little fun on the campaign trail.
11:26 pm
you didn't know about ted cruz. >> it's time now for trail tales. the proud back owe wacko bird. it has been suggested that we are wacko birds. mr. ted was called a wacko bird and it made him very proud. >> i'm a very, very proud wacko bird. >> he dreamed of changing the world. >> take over the world. control everything, rich, powerful. >> so he ran for office and made some ads. >> looked at the candidates. ted cruz is my man. >> sometimes he makes us laugh. >> could you, would you, with a goat? >> and sometimes he tries to scare us. >> mike lee, i am your father. >> but in this story mr. ted wants to bring us hope.
11:27 pm
for over a decade. >> and in this story he wants to bring us hope. >> i'm here tonight with a word of hope and encouragement. >> so he delivered a message about the world. mr. ted said the world -- >> what did he say? >> the whole world is stronger? the world is on fire. your world is on fire. >> he said the world is a beautiful place and he loves kids very much. >> and do kids love him? >> are you kidding? >> ouch. >> yeah, and so he gave his mommy a hug and set out to change the world. i love you, mom. >> love you too, dear.
11:28 pm
and hold for a second. >> as a proud wacko bird in a wacko kind of year. >> and thanks for joining us for count down to florida primary. remember to check out fox35orlando.com for the latest breaking news. we'll see you back here rotisserie-style chicken raised without antibiotics? it's what we do. that same chicken pulled by hand? it's what we do. freshly-baked bread and crisp veggies? it's what we've always done. the new rotisserie-style chicken sandwich from subway.
