9:15 am
welcome back to good day orlando at 9:00 o'clock. this morning we're wishing a happy birthday to twitter. the social media site turns ten today. the very first tweet was from ceo jack dorsey. he sent the tweet, setting up my twitter. the site has 320 million users now who connect people around the world. over to you. >> thank you. speaking of social media and phones, it is a dilemma for kids everyone, when is it appropriate to make a phone call and when would a text message be best? danny fowler with the etiquette school of florida joins me now with great advice on when we should text and when we should actually make a phone call.
9:16 am
>> good morning. >> it seems like everyone texts now. but you say it's not appropriate in every situation, right? >> it's absolutely not. and texting is informal. is if you can remember that, if you have something important to say, texting is not the way to go. remember it's just the beginning of the conversation or following up from a conversation, but not the meat of the conversation. >> i think millenials think it's not informal. don't you think? >> absolutely. and i think they think it's acceptable because they grew up that way. i know my children text me and we -- we have to text our children because they don't listen to the phone ring. >> they have their ear buds in. my son will be in his room and i text him because i know that's the quickest way to get ahold of him. >> it's great with your children because it's good to know they arrived safely, where are they? how are you feeling? it's really quick. they have a tendency to check really short messages anyway. this should be short. they should not be a long story of what's going on.
9:17 am
precursor, ending. remember, millenials, they have a tendency to do all the texting that has the slang. i don't know all that slang. >> i can't tell any more. it's an abbreviation for everything. >> right. which makes it casual. if it's for something informal, like you want to talk to your boss, i suggest you don't text them. e-mail or call them. we've also discussed this, bosses sometimes want to text us first. >> yes. >> that is okay. that's perfectly appropriate because i believe we're in such a fast-paced world now, texting sometimes makes more sense. >> if your boss texts you first, you can text back, but you can't text them first. >> you have to set the standard. i would not text my boss just information. lost in translation. >> what about couples who are just dating? is it appropriate then to text? >> i would not -- i would say it's not okay to text someone when you're picking them out and outside the door. not okay. you definitely want to go to the door to pick up the girl.
9:18 am
especially in the beginning. later, still don't do anything important in the text. anything with serious connotation, you want to make sure you say it in person because things get lost in translation. when you're dating, you want to have conversations with that person. you get to know each other that way. >> the nuances are there. they're not in the text. definitely don't break up in a text. i think that's the rudest. >> i hate that. or e-mail. that doesn't work either. >> in person, first. >> what if you're married? sometimes our lives can get so crazy, is it okay to text our spouse? >> it is, because we're all busy. sometimes we're in a meeting or sometimes just if you're driving, don't text them. you want to also think about where they are during the day. don't text them -- you forgot this or some sort of mean text. >> don't make them mad behind the wheel. >> and also at work. they may be in a meeting. if you have something you really need to discuss, can we talk later, and then they're going to worry. but it's better to text that. don't text the serious things
9:19 am
not good. >> all right. great advice. where can people find you had? >> etiquettefl.com. >> thank you so muchment we appreciate you coming in. >> 9:18 is the time. let's see how ou monday is shaping up. a little chilly out there. >> chilly and windy. look at the lake eola. that spray is going across the lake. there you see the wind picking up. that's how it goes this monday morning. good morning, central florida. temperatures now 40s. some low to mid 50s. orlando metro areas south of that. you can see the culprit in the wind this morning. the high is the departure of our surface front. a squeeze play going in. you can see ripping across the gulf of mexico. on top of the state right now. winds tamp down and subside tonight. as for right now, it's very plussery. still sustained winds now at over 20 orlando and north northwest 22 reported at deland and volusia county. bottom line today, we're cool, breezy.
9:20 am
no issue. just a whole heck of a lot cooler than we've been as of late. you can check our tower cam here. this is the visit orlando tower cam on the hyatt regency orlando overlooking i drive area and area hotels. you can clearly see at times things get wobbly. next system arriving by friday, saturday. so with that said, shifting winds, a warmer atmosphere for us as we ramp up the remainder of the week. florida cold today but gone tomorrow. a big warm-up op the way. this guy, big swirl over the pacific moving i don't know shore, bringing weather with it. by the time it gets to our portion of the globe, it will begin to harness quite a bit of moisture out of the gulf and the florida straights. thus the rain chance begins to rise during that time. today, one to two feet, flat late day. maybe another surge of swell in the back end of the week outside of that. it was fun while it lasted.
9:21 am
if you were out, it was fun on saturday. high tide 8:41. early tide today at 8:23. low in between at 2:36. water temperatures are moving on up, in particular across brevard county now. surf zone approaching the mid 70s at this time for a change. looking good. again for today, 60s, wide sunshine. blustery winds. tonight's winds a lax. temperatures fall off. we think 35 at gainesville compared to 47 orlando. and 46 from titusville and scots more south into brevard county, toward melbourne and palm bay. next seven days, breezy today. not so much by midweek. winds couple down, temperatures come up, as well as the rain chance. 50% by saturday and sunday. that's your forecast. over to you now. >> still to come, we're mixing painting with break dancing and this morning david martin giving us a sneak peek. two great tastes great together. just like the old commercial for reese's peanut butter cup. that's with this is, david. >> reporter: yeah.

9:25 am
how did you get started in speed painting and break dancing? artist. i've been painting since i was five-year old and started break dancing since i was 16. i've been painting for 18 years. >> reporter: which one do you do better? >> i love dancing 'cause you get the reward right away. but painting, is a beautiful visual that you get at the end. you just have to wait for it. >> reporter: do you ever have people say i want you to make x, yz person? >> yeah. i get requests all the time for people want me to do logos, product reveals. they want me to do icons or daughter or sons for their birthday. i plan for all shows. i make the music, i design the experience with the acrobatics, with the dancing and painting. and with the crazy costumes. >> i love it all. come here, clay.

forecast in ten minutes. >> do you ever wonder what your pet is thinking. according to a new study, our dogs really know what we're thinking. they can read our minds. >> yeah. ryan is here to explain all the details. what's going on here, ryan? >> is that a good thing is another question. dogs cannot talk because not only is that the case, but pets can read our minds. that's what a new study says. they think that they know more about people than we really know. this new study published by a professor in france says our dogs pick up on social clues the same way that younger kids do as well. they call this social referencing, is how they describe it. our four legged friends react to strangers based on our reaction. so a dog will choose how to act toward a person after they watch their owner interact with that person first. researchers think their study could help owners actually train their dog more effectively. maybe that's one reason we get along so well with our pets. we don't know what they're thinking. >> yeah.
9:38 am
