belgium under attack. reports of multiple explosions at an airport and subway station. the government is calling it terrorism. >> belgium is now at its highest terror level ever. 23 people are confirmed dead. fox 35's jackie orozco has more on what is going on. jackie, what have you found out? >> reporter: good morning. we are just getting in word that this is a terrorist attack. authorities in brussels are telling everyone to remain where they are after explosions rocked an airport and subway station. capturing the chaos moments after the explosion. people can be seen running from the airport as smoke billowed

outside of the airport you can see smashed glass, debris, debris. reports that there was gunfire before the explosion went off. initial reports are that the explosions went off at an american airlines ticket counter at a departure lounge. american airlines tweeted that they're working to take care of customers and employees. runways are being evacuated. and all flights in and out of brussels have been canceled. planes diverted away from the airport. planes are shown circling the airport after the explosions. authorities are telling people to stay away from the airport. here's what an american couple just told sky news. >> you feel like a wave.

as soon as it happened? >> yes. >> reporter: the subway system in brussels is closed after the explosions rocked at least one subway station. belgium on high alert since they have arrested a terrorist. they believe that he may have built a new network while on the run. and police are looking for a suspected accomplice that may have helped him in the terror attacks. at least 13 people are dead in brussels following several explosions. that number could be going up. one explosion happened under a building where europe leaders meet. they've been trying to ease the migrant crisis. >> retired kernel jay voorhees

>> john: what is your immediate reaction of what you are seeing this morning today? >> good morning. i wish we were talking under better terms. my immediate reaction is that we need to understand this is a network. you just mentioned the take down of salih, but this is a network that continues to be very vibrant, as demonstrated by terrorists, this event, other event, and we need to continue to be relentless. we can't get comfortable with individuals being taken down. we need to collectively focus on the network. it's very sophisticated and our hearts and prayers go out to everyone in belgium. >> in the network is, in fact, isis, how does belgium strike back? >> we need to continue to be vigilant. that's the big question, luanne. we can't be comfortable with individual takedowns or

this is going to be a long-term campaign and we need to continue to gather intelligence and share intelligence. a good example is that a lot of the folks that did the attacks in paris came from belgium, and now we have the refugee crisis flooding into europe and it needs to be taken seriously. there are folks that want to do bad things and it continues to be evident. it impacts the our way of life. >> john: they said that maybe it forced the other groups that he's talking, they'll be on to us, we need to act quicker and maybe they sped up the attacks? >> i think that could be a factor, john. in general, whether they hear he's talking or norkts they're going to strike back and say they're still operating from a position of power. you may be able to take folks

networks but they're sending a message that they have a sophisticated network not just limited to one group and they strike and put fear in when they feel we have had a strong victory. >> i guess the big question for us here in the united states is, do we need to be concerned? could we see something like this happen in the united states? >> i think we have seen it. i think, luanne, it's a great question, and a great point, and it needs to be continued for ever to understand that there are folks and cells reported in the united states. they could be waiting to strike as well. and i just have to re-emphasize the fact that this is going to be a long-term campaign. there are people that want to do bad things. and we need to continue to report and coordinate and talk through police channels through community channels, through military channels to try to

and that's where gina benitez is this morning with the very latest. >> reporter: that ucf student said he did not know the two men who broke into his apartment. this morning, it's still unclear if the victim was targeted or if this was just a random home invasion. it all happened a little after 12:30 this morning. the sheriff's office deputy said that the two men went into an unlocked apartment here. in the victim's bedroom door, as he slept, and robbed him at gun point. they stole items but it's unclear of what they are getting away with. the two men's responsible for this here did get a way. it's unclear how they were able to get away. but they're still out there this morning. if you have any information, call the seminole sheriff's
