tv   Good Day 9am  FOX  March 22, 2016 9:00am-10:00am EDT

9:00 am
it's 9:00 a.m., from fox 35, this is "good day orlando." >> 900 here on your tuesday morning. brown. >> and i'm luanne sorrell. here's a look at what's coming up on today's show. chaos in belgium, we are
9:01 am
the deadly terror attacks there. >> plus, a number of people using help apps has doubled in the last two years, but do they really work for you? the fox medical team is taking a closer look. >> plus a texting mix-up over a newborn, and the sweet moment between strangers, more on this florida story that is going viral this morning. and david martin, good morning. >> louann, good morning to you live along the busy avenue in winter park. we're going to take you to a brand-new glass-blowing glass, they're calling it old kinderhook, on the 9:00 hour of... >> good day orlando! >> aren't they cold, in tee shirts out there. >> a second ago i said not a good day to go to the water parks and the zoo. i meant the beach. great day to go to the zoo. time. that's why. freezing his brain, j.k. >> later today, we're looking
9:02 am
how it pans out this morning, frost advisory has been lifted, discontinued, whatever you want to call it, come to orlando, 55. we are getting better sun angles changed a lot. we'll warm up things a little bit more efficiently, a little quicker for us as we approach the afternoon. by 2:00, we're at 74, a cool start with a fabulous ending, heck of a day for you, things do change over the next 72 hours. we start to see the storm track bend downward, not quite into the states, some of the areas of lower pressure, the associated fronts dragging along this attendantant cold front, and the lows passing by mr. begin to bring in foist from the south, with that southerly flow, the temperatures go sky high, time talking thursday, looking at about 85, we increase the clouds and general moisture content of the local atmosphere. rain chance goes up big time. 50, 60% type coverage.
9:03 am
with that. i'll share that in just a bit. over to you now. >> staying on top of that breaking news. the death toll is growing after multiple terror takes in belgium. >> let's get to jackie orozco. >> reporter: we're hearing the latest that at least 28 people are dead in several terrorist attacks in brussels. talking about at least three attacks at the airport and subway stations, the white house says president obama, who is in cuba, has been briefed on the situation, and may speak about the situation in a press conference later on today. now, belgium's prime minister says that this is a dark moment for his nation, and is calling on calm and solidarity. now, the first attack occurred early this morning at an airport. 13 people were killed, when two explosions went off. now, reports are that the explosions went off at an american airlines ticket counter, and a departure lounge. planes evacuated and all the flights in and out of brussels have been cancelled. just an hour after the airport
9:04 am
through a brussels subway station, there, 15 people were killed, and 55 others injured. belgium is now at its highest terror level. as of right now, we still do not know who is behind all these terrorist attacks, and of course, stay with us for the very latest. for now, reporting from the zoe , jackie orozco, fox 35 news. salah abdeslam is the only surviving suspect in the paris terrorist attacks. it is believed he may have built a new network while on the run. meanwhile police are looking for a suspected accomplice that helped him in the attacks. what are your thoughts on what transpired this morning? >> good morning, john. my immediate reaction is actually since he's been arrested, this is a reaction from the cell groups, to show france and brussels, whoever,
9:05 am
we're still going to show you basically. >> for people who don't follow this closely, brussels, and the country of belgium, have had a growing problem, they've let in so many people, and people there have been saying, heard them all over the news today, saying we knew something like this was going to happen, because our now. you've been there, is that what you're hearing, too? >> the european union has been lack on allowing the extremism since the 70s, i remember in london, and in paris, and france, they have not been vetting them, as we need to vet them better. they are actually allowing, and gave them such a freedom now, they've grown so much, and they're so out of control, now they're trying to, of course, bring it back to normality, which is not going to happen, unless they start really taking out the cells, eliminating any situations like the one we had in paris. and do much more human
9:06 am
doing the last decade, or two. >> i heard a law enforcement official on our parent network, fox news, this morning saying they made a mistake when they captured saying he's talking to quickly. he's talking to us now, they should have kept this quiet. >> trust, when you breach it, you become an outsider, you'll never hear the fbi, or any other agency that will disclose what discussions, or what cooperation this individual is providing. so therefore, yes, the answer, it's a terrible mistake, actually. >> i want you leave you with this, you said numerous times this is a hard issue to tackle, you're not just talking about beliefs, this is a group that wants to take over the world, how you stop that, it's going to be really complex.
9:07 am
allowed such a freedom of the radicalization of any person, it doesn't have to be islam, or any other, but the point is that we need to nip it in the bud, and stop it right there, if we can start doing that here and have better -- and we do have human intelligence, but also cooperating with other agencies, and work together with international, either be international intelligence agencies, it would help us a lot in the future. >> our terrorism expert, appreciate your time. thank you. >> 9:07 on "good day orlando." also developing, the search is on for two suspects who broke into a ucf's student's home and robbed him. >> right across from the campus of ucf.
9:08 am
we are having trouble with her signal. orange county deputies are searching for the gunman who shot and killed a teen at a crowded playground. >> this shooting happened near a basketball court near old apopka road and 13th. deputies arrived at 2:30, they say multiple shots were fired, boy. he later died at the hospital, and despite the crowd, they say no one is talking about what they saw. right now, investigators are not releasing the name of the victim. in seminole county, police are looking to track down a pair of robbery suspects before they're able to strike again. they are responsible for four armed robberies, all inality month -- in altamont springs. they are seen wearing hooded sweat shirts. the two men robbed four people
9:09 am
detectives say that in all four cases, the suspects approached people in the parking lot, robbed them at gunpoint, and then just calmly walked away. thankfully, no one was hurt. >> a search is under way this morning for a missing teenager from semino county. she was last scene on morning glory drive wearing a grey jacket with yellow sleeves, blue jeans cut over the knees, and black tennis shoes, if you know where jayden is, you are asked to contact the sheriff's office. the battle between seaworld and peta continues. ryan elijah join us with the details. >> good morning, peta pleased breeding whales. it wants more, they want them to be taken to pet sanctuaries where the444444444444 live in pens. they would struggle to survive on their own in the wild. it is argued the orcas are best
9:10 am
despite phasing out the killer whale, trainers can do a much better job of taking care of them at that place. peta owns a very small number of shares in seaworld, which lets them vote and file a request on behalf of shareholders. >> developing this morning, back to the search for suspects who broke into a ucf student's only. >> it happened after 12:30 at the apartments across the street from ucf. that's where gina benitez is with that story. what do we know about the two suspects in this case? >> good morning, louann, at this point we know very little about them. we do know that the victim in this case does not know the two men who broke into his apartment and robbed him. at this point it's still unclear if he was intentionally targeted, or if this was a crime of opportunity, because his apartment door was unlocked. now, though this is a private
9:11 am
majority of people living here are ucf students. two men went in around 12:30 this morning. the men kicked in the victim's bedroom door while he was asleep, pulled out a gun, and robbed him. they stole property, but it's not clear what they got away with. the good news in all of this is no one was hurt, but those two suspects still on the run this morning. if you have any information on this case, call the seminole county sheriff's office. reporting in seminole county, gina benitez, fox 35 news. still to come, fitness app exploding in popularity. >> but, do they really work? a closer look at if your health app is doing what you pay for it to do. plus, david martin hanging out at a cool date night spot. hey, david. >> yeah, good point, louann, hi, john, very excited to show you the brand-new old kindergartener took in winter park, a glass blowing studio, bring your

9:15 am
. 9:14 here on good day. on the health watch, research shows a number of people using health apps has doubled in the past two years. >> around christmas time, 28 million wearable fitness trackers were shipped to the u.s., and the popularity is absolutely exploding, but, are they working, that's the question. and fox medical teams, dr. joe is here to take a closer look. good morning, dr. joe, great to see you. >> good morning, good to see you, too, louann. you have to remember with these fitness bracelets and all of this, the trackers, it is helping a lot of people. and basically, we talked to some individuals, they said that it's stimulated them to get a group together at work, they walk during lunch breaks, they've lost weight, and they watch each other, they included their families now into those circles, and they try to compete with one another. if someone has more steps than them, they try to increase the steps and try to overcome that.
9:16 am
to keep people accountable, but we have to look at the flip side, as well. we know some of the medical information that's being transmitted through these may not be totally accurate, there's a lawsuit right now against fit bit, they're saying the heart rate monitors are not working properly. i just heard about another one where they looked at some of the energy expenditures, and they're saying those can be off plus or minus 200 calories, we have to take it with a grain of salt and use them for what we know that they can work for. remember, they're not necessarily accurate. >> you touched on the wealth of information that these trackers can hold in them, or inside the app, are doctors able to access that information so that they can evaluate their patients? >> you know, that's a great question. i think we're in its infancy, some doctors don't know what to do with the information. i have an app called a live core, it's phenomenal, and
9:17 am
this is a fda approved app, not all of them are. >> over time we're going to see more and more apps fda approved, especially along the medical line. but when we look at the fitness information, i think a lot of times doctors don't know what to do with all of that information. people come into them and want them to see all of their steps and everything. over time, there probably will be software that's going to help condense that and streamline it and help doctors incorporate t. right now, it's kind of toughgh. yeah, i really think they're going to have a play. >> and dr. joe, another concern is security of these devices, are people able to hack into them and get our personal information? >> wow, that, you know, i'm very concerned about this. there was a recent study on the android app, 81% of them did not have any indication of privacy, so that information can be shared. some of them were -- had information like insulin usage, and glucose levels, and things
9:18 am
shareable, but at the same time, i see the benefit of having the cumulative data if it's anonymous, you can target an area. look, i've got the orlando area, and they're not walking, let's do something here to stimulate those people, or try to increase the education to help them to do those things, so i can see a benefit. but there's a tradeoff. and there's some people that are speculating that maybe insurance companies could use them, could they lower your premiums? could they raise someone else's premiums, how is it all going to play out? i will tell you there is money being invested right now, and there is studies going on by private foundations to try to figure this all out, so that all of our information isn't out there and being hacked >> all right, dr. joe, always good to talk with you, thanks for being with us this morning. 9:18 is now the time. it is still cold out there, jayme. >> 55 out airport, 62 by 11. 74 by 2:00, a cool start with a
9:19 am
