position. good morning from the studio 57 newsroom at cbs news headquarters here in new york. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning, the brunt of a potentially crippling life-threatening snowstorm is bearing down on the mid-atlantic region. but the big storm will affect an area from arkansas to new england. the nation's capital is in the bull's-eye and it started to snow there last night. washington is preparing for blizzard conditions this weekend and up to two feet of snow. don champion is here in new york city where up to one foot of snow is forecast. don, good morning. >> reporter: that's right. good morning. this is certainly the calm before the storm. but there are still some uncertainties in terms of the storm's impact on the new york city area, but one thing looks to be for sure, people in and around the nation's capital could get the biggest storm they

this is where it gathers moisture along theco and producing heavy rain and thunderstorms. then it turns to the east cok area for some big mid-atlantic snow. we will start with today, first. we have a chance of severe weather along the gulf coast and damaging wind gusts, heavy rain and even a couple of isolated that severe threat heads over to florida for friday. looking at this hour-by-hour, here comes the heavy rain for today. as we head into the day on got a full-fledged snowstorm developing and also a major ice storm for much of north carolina and that could have big consequences for power outages and for travel. into saturday morning, the snow is moving up into new york city. during the day on saturday lifting into southern new england and about as far north as this storm gets. so 1 to 2 in the blue area and the epi center likely around washington, d.c. and baltimore and two feet may onditions and keeping an eye on coastal flooding which would be a big
