new focus on screening for depression. and influential panel of experts say all be evaluated for the condition and, for the first time, the u.s. preventive services task force calls for depression screenings for pregnant women and new mothers. our dr. holly phillips good morning. this is significant. why this call? >> it really is. it's a major statement. but honestly i don't think the task force had much of a choice. they really had to respond to of evidence that shows maternal depression is far more common than we previously thought. so the report states that egnant women, 10% of new moms will experience new episodes of depression, major depression. some cases of what we thought waspression started during pregnancy or before. so there was, you know, a real outcry this is something that needs to be priorityized and

expectant mother and new mothers? >> there is an increased risk ofming the baby but much more commonly, it's just that depressed women don't take good care ofkely to do their prenatal visits and take vitamins and eat well. beyond that there can be a children who are born to mothers depressed during pregnancy or after. there are behavioral changes in kids and emotional issues. you can even track changeseir school performance years later. >> depressed expectant mothers may be involved in substance abuse which they the report >> the report did point out sometimes women feel so isolated, they don't want to ask for help and start to self-medicate with substances that could hurt the baby. >> how do you know when to seek help? >> one the biggest hurdles of the task
