. >>. >> good evening. thank you for joining us. on tuesday, voters will head to the polls. in lakewood, the hospital there remains a hot issue. how lakewood city council voted to close the hospital back in december. people there are still fighting against it. >> yes. city council voted to close lakewood high school so it could be replaced by a health center. now people are rallying others to overturn that decision by voting no on issue 64. a group of people who live in the community are campaigning the issue. they say the hospital was one of the largest in the area. they argue it is difficult for people who can't get around to find nearby healthcare. they made a deal to replace lakewood's full service hospital

>> most people never knew diesel fuel was spilling into the rocky river for years until the situation was uncovered in ma questions about what is being done to prevent future pollution. >> a beautiful scene taking on a sunny morning. it is a key link. the the scene is behind and below fair view hospital which sits above. if you look closely, there was something that didn't fit. karen came to us and asked to

we asked what were these? why are they there? we found out they were placed on the water to contain diesel fuel leak ing fromtanks at the hospital. they sit on the shore at the bottom of a long culvert fed from a drainage pipe. the leak has been going on for years. >> really? >> did they clean it up or did it trickle down? >> records show the booms were not always doing their jobs. at times they were not tied properly, allowing diesel to fall into the water. the problem began in 2012 when an oil sheen was found on the river. tests were done on the underground storage tanks but they checked out. the e.p.a. began to monitor the situation. fast forward a year to december 2013. there was what was called a mystery overpressurization of

apparently not into the river. a pumping station was put into place. in april of 2014, another leak. the boomsor were put into the river. the pumping system was restarted. september of 2015, the e.p.a. investigated and another leak of diesel. >> the diesel fuel was used to supply the backup generators. the e.p.a. documented all the spills. some were st. paul leaks but enough to follow the river. a containment tank had been installed but it >> when we were 30 yards to it, you could smell the oil. and you could see it glistening on top. >> crews are busy installing a new tank. the hospital says and the e.p.a. confirms the job includes installing tanks and replacing
