tv   Cleveland 19 News This Morning  CBS  November 9, 2016 6:00am-7:00am EST

6:00 am
i'm nichole vrsansky at the alert desk. here's what mr. trump had to say around 2:50 this morning. >> for those who have chosen not to support me in the past, of which there were a few people, i'm reaching out to you for your guidance and your help so that we can work together and unify our great country. >> nichole: hillary clinton did not speak overnight, but her campaign chairman, john they gathered for what they thought was going to be a victory celebration. >> i want every person in this hall to know and i want every person across the country that supported hillary to know that your voices and your enthusiasm means so much to her and to tim and to all of us. we are so proud of you! >> nichole: we have been getting reaction to this upset
6:01 am
we share that with you throughout the hour. tia and brian. >> brian: it's wednesday, november 9th, 6:00. >> tia: at the bottom of the screen, you should see all the local elections and those issues. they will be running all morning long letting you what happened in the election. before we get into the big election day and the aftermath, let's check with samantha roberts. hey, sam. >> samantha: good morning. a mild morning and a little warmer than you would expect this timf we still have rain we're tracking for you along i-77 and points off to the east. if you wake up with me around akron, good morning to you. it is still raining there. also still coming down in the canton area, especially on the west side of canton, although as i mentioned that is drifting a little closer to the 77 corridor. showers still ongoing on the southeast cleveland out in geauga county, northwestern portage county and northern summit county.
6:02 am
you have a little more shower activity on the way. we have to get through about 6:30 or so before the rain winds down there. your forecast for today, okay, this rain is not going to be an all-day thing. i think by 9:00 or 10:00, most of us will be dry. if not a little bit sooner than that. notice how the chances do drop through the day. our temperatures in the upper 40s all day, and laura, it is going to be a windy day, so a lot of folks that steering wheel. >> laura: yeah, i heard and felt that wind. you have to hold on tight when you have wet road conditions, and we definitely do this morning. it's caused accidents and slipping and sliding around. be careful out there. most of the accidents have cleared, so you're looking at a very green map right now not with a lot of problems, right? we have some construction out there. so construction on i-90 eastbound will take place overnight near i-77 near 19th street. so we're there on the innerbelt
6:03 am
tonight. that will start at 8:00 tonight, and it will wrap up at 6:00 tomorrow morning. then we have your drive times. 19 minutes from strongsville and running on time from north olmstead and akron. they're good commutes albeit very, very wet. similar to the other construction project on the innerbelt bridge, we have overnight on i-77 near the innerbelt. i'll talk about that at 6:19. >> brian: shock, awe and even tears. this was the sentiment hillary clinton election night watch party as donald trump kept winning key battleground states, which eventually paved the way to become the next president of the united states. we've been watching social media all night. a lot of people are stunned by how last night's presidential election turned out. >> brian: america has spoken, and this morning sia nyorkor is getting answers for us about what people are saying and how they're feeling this morning. good morning, tia.
6:04 am
there's mixed reaction here at the my friends diner on the west side of cleveland. walked in here, and there were several people sitting at the counter right behind me and watching those results pour in. a lot of regular people, customers told me that they come here for the comfort food and to talk with like-minded people. here's what some of them had to say about the results. >> i'm overwhelmed by this, and i feel like i am very hurt that a lot of people that i care about and people i surd myself with, like, can be okay with this kind of hate and just like someone that would put people down constantly. >> this isn't a one-person team, man. this is a whole 9 million people in this continent alone. it's larger than you think. >> sia: and so there you have it, just a sprinkling of some of what the customers say here at my friends.
6:05 am
little light out, so we expect more people to filter in here and get some comfort food and have some conversation. so we will be here through the morning monitoring that and bringing you all those updates on air and online. for now i'm sia nyorkor getting answers, "cleveland 19 news." >> brian: sia, the old election saying is as ohio goes, so goes the election. donald trump convincingly took ohio winning with 52% of the vote compared to clinton's of the vote. ohio went republican for president and followed suit for the senate race. rob portman beat strickland by nearly 20% of the vote. >> tia: that's right. we have team coverage for you live in columbus this morning starting with cleveland 19's sara goldenberg who was at the gop party last night. sara, a big night for republicans right here in the buckeye state. >> reporter: guys, a lot to celebrate for republicans.
6:06 am
it was called early in the night less than an hour after the polls closed. take a look at this video. this is senator portman celebrating at his victory speech last night. this senate race was originally on the list of one of the most competitive senate races, but that changed earlier this year when portman pulled ahead with big numbers. on the campaign trail he focused on his fight against the heroin epidemic and human trafficking. take a listen. >> people don't want the tape and live through another four years of the same tired and self-defeating roux tone. they're looking for something new. they expect better. we are capable of better. with a fresh start there will never be a better moment than now to rise above the dysfunction in washington, d.c. and find that common ground. >> reporter: the theme of his victory speech last night was this is a fresh start.
6:07 am
in the next half hour we hear from the chair of the republican party on what he had to say about portman's victory. meanwhile, i want to bring in catherine bosley. she was at the democratic watch party. >> reporter: that watch party in the ballroom just above us. it was supposed to be a celebrate. it got quiet as democrats watched the ohio numbers come in. in fact, no one was talking much about it at all. it was the second hard hit after ted strickland lost the u.s. senate race early on. what was cal democratic victory party, again, turned out to be anything but. here's what the ohio democratic chairman david pepper had to say about it all. >> a tough loss. obviously, a lot of counties clearly showed up in big ways, and it's just way beyond what even the polls expected. so it's a disappointment for us. >> reporter: so pepper like so many other democratic party leaders across ohio, across the

6:09 am
>> nichole: the doctor suggests grabbing a pen and paper. >> writing down their fears, and then going through and really looking at each one and saying, you know, is this a valid fear? if it is, how can i cope with it? >> nichole: other coping suggestions include monitoring what you're looking at on social media, especially if it gets overwhelming. focus on the present, not the what ifs. and know that you can't control the behavior of others. >> while there may be different viewpoints and different values, what i would really recommend is people stay true to themselves and really monitor their own reactions. that's all we have control over. >> nichole: and with the presidential race, dr. borland says he hopes our country can focus on moving forward, and he also says he thinks the fact that it's over is actually a big sense of relief to many. tia. >> tia: we will continue to work to get you answers on what's next for ohio and our
