cities so far. >> mark: yep, we have. a number of them, as a matter of fact. officers in oregon confronted thousands of protestors. police called it a riot there, as a matter of fact. arrested more than two dozen demonstrators. getting answers now on those nationwide protests. >> reporter: over night, violence erupted on the streets of portland. during the second straight day of protests. >> i got hit. >> reporter: over the election of d police in riot gear launched flash banks and fired rubber bullets to try to break up the people. they called it a riot after people began vandalizing cars and businesses in the city's pearl district. some protestors launched fireworks and other projectiles at police. >> i threw a trash can at them because i'm angry. >> will you go home?

>> reporter: at one point a man brandishing a gun demanded the protestors move away. >> i live here. i didn't vote for trump. >> reporter: there were reports of attacks on drivers. cell phone video shows a woman throwing detergent on protestors after she left her car. what started out as a peaceful protest descended into chaos. >> we are here for love. we are not here to spread hate. >> reporter: it is expected more protests could tonight. >> romona: it's hard to watch those pictures at case western here this afternoon a smaller protest than many around the country. students told cleveland 19 news their message remains the same. they don't support a president who doesn't support them. and many of the students brought up their frustration with the electoral college saying they would love to see that go away in the history books.

news from lorraine county. l lacy crisp is live right now where people are protesting for a different reason. lacy. >> reporter: that's right. you can see there are about 100 people here protesting what they say is racial profiling. this is the second day of protests here. according to a police report, wednesday night a store employee accused jonathan aladdin of stealing two bottles of wine. the worker told police he tried to take a picture and keep him in the store but he slaps the phone out of his hands and able to get outside. police say when they arrived, they saw a group of people punching and kicking the store worker. they have handed out a flyer saying a member of their community had been assaulted and the bakery has a history of racial profiling. now, aladdin and two other women were in court this morning. i did speak with one of the store owners. she says more people have come into the store in the last two days telling them that they

relocating to washington where he'll take the oath of office ten weeks from today. jurors told a judge they can't reach a decision in the murder trial of ray tensing, the white former police officer who fatally shot sam debeaux, an unarmed black man last year. the judge told him to keep deliberating. have you been outside at all today? if you have, you noticed it was awfully windy out there. pe warm against the whipping winds. waves crashed along the shoreline of lake erie. the powerful winds had flags flapping in the wind as we celebrate our veterans on veteran's day. look at this. still dealing with the winds along the lakeshore. it's out of the north. we had the front that came through this morning. a little bit of rain with it but no rain out there right now. temps have dropped into the 40s.

at arlington national cemetery on his last veteran's day in office. he also participated in the laying of the wreath ceremony at the tomb of the unknown and held a breakfast this morning in the state dining room to honor those who served. any time a veteran is away from home, hearts are heavy. when they return, spirits soar. >> romona: that was certainly the case when a little girl's dad walked into a veteran's day celebration at her school. reporter harry boomer is here with their story. harry. >> reporter: ramona and the phrase daddy's little girl is like nothing you will ever see. get out the kleenex. love doesn't get any better than this. phoebe, a third grader running and crying at the same time to greet her dad who she hasn't seen in stix months. he is stationed at langley air force base in virginia.

morning, wasn't it? we had the sun. we had that little bit of a warmup early in the morning. and then the front came through. forget about it. that north wind kicked in. we had a little bit of rain. now the temperatures are dropping. so 43 at 7:00. it's still going to be fairly windy at least early this evening, which, you know, that wind chill will make it feel like it's in the 30s. 10:00, 40. and then we drop well into the 30s in cleveland. by 7:00 a.m., about 33. and inland i have 20s in some cases. for instance, akron-canton, wooster, et cetera. 46 akron-canton right now. north wind at 17. and in downtown cleveland it's 47 and a brisk north wind at 21 gusting to 30. it's still mostly cloudy. slowly calming down, though, as the night wears on, which means the wind will slowly decrease. not as windy this weekend and sun filled. we're going to change things up just like that.

you first about the electoral college process. it's actually the electors that cast the votes that legally elect the president. >> mark: there are petitions floating around. ignore the state vote. cast your ballot for clinton. this is sort of shades of 2000. it comes down to history, right? >> right, right. it would be a violation of the rules and you only have a certain number of states where that's even allowed. generally speaking an eor their state voted in general. now, this has brought attention back to the core issue of the electoral college and the popular vote. i have always believed and i've done studies of this, i think the electoral college to have real value. if you didn't have them have a point system, they would never travel to different states. they would stick around and

i think when you have an electoral college versus popular vote, they should win. that's not the right -- trump is president-elect of the united states. >> romona: it's disheartening to see all of the protests that are happening. some of them peaceful and that's okay. but the ones that are not, some people rioting, what do you think needs to happen? should president-elect trump come out and say something to calm the nation's fears? or do you think that's the job of president obama? >> well, ramona, here thing. these are not protests about trump just getting elected. these are in response to the brex it-level rash of hate crimes and racial violence that we've seen since he got ee leblingted. trump has been saying all along that this was going to be the american brex it. what did we see happen in the uk. attacks against muslims. attacks against people of color. there have been lists. there have been skyrocketing attacks across the country. you have a black baby doll that

you have the klu klux klan doing a march in downtown durham in north carolina. i have a colleague who woke up to see a watermelon smashed and smeared over the hood of her car. i know people with immigrant children that are being told you're going to be sent home. so people are protesting not just because they're unhappy but out of legitimate visceral fear for their physical safety. with donald trump being endorsed by terrorist organizationsik as the leader of a peaceful transition to go out and say i'm a law and order president and therefore anyone who wants to harass or attack in my name, we will prosecute you. and anyone who protests and violates the law, we will pros prosecute you as well. i don't think he's going to do it. >> mark: we have a long way to go and hopefully we'll get some

dr. jason johnson, thanks for joining us today. appreciate it. >> any time. all right. it used to be that women were discouraged from getting pregnant once they were in their late 30s and early 40s because the risks were just too high. but more women are getting pregnant and having healthy babies well into advanced maternal age. while those myths are being busted, a new set of risks and realities is not being addressed. well, jen picciano is getting some answers on that. >> reporter: stacy is the picture of health. five months pregnant and at the ripe old age of 35. >> how does that sit with you? just the title itself? >> i think it's kind of funny because i feel like i'm so young. but, i don't know, when you hear it, you think of someone that's maybe in their 70s or 80s. not 35. ? clinically considered advanced maternal age, she says she has already had twice as many appointments with this pregnancy as she had with her 2-year-old son austin. >> they kind of scare you.

ultrasounds and i don't do these extra tests and something does happen, could we have done something about it. or just been more prepared. >> reporter: dr. stacy erinburn, a maternal specialist at the university hospital says the risk of genetic complications or chromosomal abnormalities does increase as a woman gets older but the odds aren't against you. >> it's still less than 1%. and i'm not much of a betting woman. but if i were, chance my baby is not going to have a chromosome abnormality. i would take those chances. >> reporter: women of advanced maternal age face higher risk of blood pressure problems, multiples, low birth rate, pre maturity, loss of pregnancy, csections, down's syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities. >> i think a lot of women feel should i have a child older because what about if something is wrong and it's my fault because i waited too long. >> reporter: but the doctor

abnormalities in babies born to women over 40 is still less than 2% if you're healthy. >> we actually tend to see more birth defects in moms who are in the over weight or obese category if you base it on bmi than we do in moms who are between the ages of about 35 and 40. >> reporter: she says the risk for a host of different problems for baby and mom are directly related to a woman's bmi. >> the older you get, the more likely it is to have a chromosome abnormality with your baby. higher your bmi, the more likely you are to have a baby with one of these birth defects. >> reporter: they often see brain and spine issue like spina bifida as well as abnormality like a cleft lip or cleft palate among women that are overweight. women that are overweight may have a baby with heart dpeekts. for those who are severe re obese, the risk jumps to 30.

a normal bmi. >> gestational diabetes, preeclampsia which is a high blood pressure issue in pregnancy, sleep apnea. and all of those things also increase your risk for you and your baby to have other complications during the pregnancy. >> reporter: the doctor says mom who are overweight or obese also put themselves and baby at risk come delivery time. c sections are significantly more common and more risky. >> it may be harder to keep your baby on the monitor because the further our from the baby, the harder it is for us to really understand what's going on with the baby at the time. >> reporter: there's also more risk for postpartum depression. now, we all know you can't turn back time to combat the risks for older moms, but dr. erinburg says getting your diabetes under control, getting active and even losing as little as 5 to 10% of your bmi prior to pregnancy can make a huge difference in the overall health and well-being of you and baby. >> good job, buddy.

realize you're 35 and they say, okay, well, do you want to go and get these special screenings, the special ultrasound, we want to make sure that everything is okay with the baby. >> reporter: stacy, a long time vegan, says she's confident she's doing all she can to ensure a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. getting answers, jen picciano, cleveland 19. >> romona: he's a cuty. so how many moms and babies does this affect? well, one-third of reproductive-age women are overweight. and when you include the ones who are obese, that to 60%. according to the cdc, 7,000 fetal deaths and nearly 3,000 heart defects can be attributed to high bmis among mothers. mark. one local navy veteran has been building flags since last summer and says it's his honor. the man creates the flags with his own two hands. sia nyorkor spent some time with him in his workshop. >> there's a flag right here i'm

hours crafting his pride and joy. >> a flag like this, i cut the boards down to size. and then i torch the boards and i hand carve every star. and that's what takes awhile. >> reporter: but the navy veteran tells me it doesn't feel like work. since last summer, he's been designing and creating these flags and now he can't seem to stop. >> i turned it into a little business. and i like to think that i'm -- you know, i'm promoting patriotism. >> reporter: it started as a way for him t in service but then it took off. since then, he sold more than 40 flags and has orders for at least 30 more. the flags cost about $200 but he offers a special discount to his fellow veterans in law enforcement officers. >> i mark it in half. i don't want to hit a homerun. i really do it for them. so i only charge $100, which is -- which is a really good price. . >> reporter: he also tells me he's not into this for the
