cleveland 19 news sponsored by national carpet mill outlet. ohio's flooring superstore. asking questions and getting answers. cleveland 19 news starts now. >> romona: now at 11:00 we are getting answers on a deadly outbreak of legionnaire's disease. we did some digging and it is the bacteria that causes it grows and multiplies in a building's water system. you can get the disease by breathing in contaminated mist or water droplets. that bacteria was found at some businesses in eastlake. workers there and some people leafing in the area got -- living in the area got i can is. >> denise: one person died after coming down with the disease. sara goldenburg is in lake

you and your family is at risk. sara? >> reporter: the health department is investigating more possible cases and three out of the 11 cases are all connected to local businesses neighboring each other right here on lakeland boulevard. this dates back to the summer. het -- health officials say it is pretty uncommon. 11 cases of legionnaire's disease started in july. a 54-year-old man died from the illness. the three separate businesses. >> the odds of that occurring are pretty rare. you expect them to be sporadic and unrelated doing your investigation. >> reporter: three employees caught legionnaire's disease from these businesses on lakeland boulevard in eastlake. the other cases residents living within a one to 10-mile radius appear. >> the reason we focus on the

vaporizes and the bacteria can be put into the air up to a one-mile read yous. >> reporter: he says the coolant towers are a frequent source of the bacteria. graham says one tower was contaminated and since then all five towers have been cleaned and they are now negative for any bacteria. >> we are continuing to monitor cases. it is important to know that we will never know the reu source of the bacteria -- the true source of the bacteria. positive. >> reporter: they tsked the water supply including drinking fountains in the businesses and they were all fine. as far as why they didn't start their investigation until october they were not a large number of caseses and they could not confirm the source. residents should not be alarmed by the outbreak. >> if you are immunocompromised the general public would not get it if they are healthy. >> reporter: now, osha is looking into the history of

they could face citations if they were not following the proper procedures. live in eastlake, getting answers, sara goldenburg, cleveland 19 news. >> denise: sara, thank you. we just got this statement from consolidated precision products. it reads in part x "no bacteria was detected in the post cleaning test results. we kept our employees in formed of the activities at the facility and fully cooperating with the appropriate federal, say the and -- state and local agencies." we did some digging into some of the symptoms of legionnaire's disease. here is what we found. symptoms develop two to 10 days after expose shirr and it it includes fever, cough, nausea, shortness of breath and muscle aches. about 5,000 people come down with legionnaire's every year. every 10 people who get sick will die from the disease. >> romona: we are continuing to get answers from the people

quality of the water after we received test results showing one house tested positive for lead. to nate paul orlousky who broke the story talked with people in the neighborhood who were dealing with the problem for years. >> reporter: we spent a good amount of time in the neighborhood talking to people and collecting water samples. their complaint are largely discoloration and taste. to be honest, they don't dr t >> we have lived here probably six years now. >> it was a surprise to us. >> we haven't drank the water since we moved here. >> what year was that? >> 15 years ago. >> reporter: this is where we collected the samples of water. water that flowed through old pipes that look like this and being replaced. however, it is not the only street where we got complaints.

looked like this this morning. the pure white new one in the middle and the old brown one we watched her take out on top. at abbie's home she noticed a problem when filling the tub for her daughter's bath. on the day we were there it was not terrible, but monday she sent us this picture. the test results came back on monday and lead was found in abbie's water. the two other homes didn't have lead, but had high iron. >> we were almost triple limit. >> surprised? jay permanently -- >> personally i don't drink the tap water. to me it is flavored. >> reporter: these days the flavor of the day is bottled water. the sample we discussed was the most discolored of those we sent and contained no lead. not every home on the street has problems and it is worse when construction crews disturb the supply for a variety of reasons. >> it comes and goes? >> only when they are playing with it. it is fine otherwise. >> the day way moved in we

didn't even have stuff in the house yet. i went to the faucet and it smelled bad and tasted bad. and folks have to live with this construction prog -- project until next august. >> romona: if there is a problem with your drinking water you are supposed to be told right away. they are to be told of immediate risks. if the contaminant levels exceed the epa standards and there is no immediate health risk they have 30 days to monitor. for monitoring or testing procedure violations they can take up to one year to tell you. >> denise: chris tanaka is tracking stories that are happening right now at the alert desk. >> chris: we are hearing from hillary clinton since she made her concession speech. and she admits it has been a

student's suspension after she and a friend posted a classmate's racial text message on-line. the success speption which was supposed to start yesterday -- the suspension which was supposed to start yesterday will not go on her record. another student served a suspension on friday and her punishment will not be reversed. >> romona: a dog in lorain is fighting for his life. he was found shot and his leg in a trap. now veterinarians are hoping he can have a second chance at life. shelby miller is getting answers on how this dog is doing. shelby? >> reporter: ramona, luckily someone found hem before it was too late and he ended up at the lorain county emergency center. now they are working around the clock to nurse chance back to health. resting up after losing his back left leg. it will be a long road to recovery for this sweet dog, chance. >> he's recovering noisily. he is pretty doped up on pain medication right now. to might, later tonight we are

digit that need to come off. >> reporter: the golden retriever pup was found wandering in lorain. his front left leg was stuck in a trap sort of like this one. when he got to the lorain county animal emergency center, dr. craig talbot realized chance was also shot. >> this is the first time we had a trap and being shot. >> reporter: overnight they amputated his back left leg and today he was curled up with a plasticon head and stitches cover the left side of his body. >> who ever owned him took good care of him. he is well mannered and he has not shown any aggression toward us at all. for the amount of pain and discomfort he has gone through he is very well mannered. >> reporter: despite everything this poor dog has gone through, dr. talbot thinks chance will be okay. >> there is always a chance for complications, but at this stage we feel he should do

veterinarians are doing all they can to make sure chance get a second chance at life. right now there are no update on who shot chance, but there is a go fund me account. this covers his medical expenses. the goal was $5,000 and they exceeded that. right now they are just shy of $8,000 and any left over funds are helping any stray animals at the center. denise? >> denise: a sweet pup. a tremendous show of u basketball game tonight. ? each player went into the audience and asked a fan to come on to the court during the playing of the national anthem. the team came up with this idea hoping to bring some unity following the election that left many people
