(nats) these aren't the men women and children the duane family originally planned to host, but they're happy to do it nonetheless. (kari duane/would-be- brides' mother) "when i found out on monday that the wedding would not be taking place, it just seemed like, of course this would be something that we would do to give back." earlier in the week the would-be groom got cold feet and called off the wedding. rather than cancel the 35 thousand dollar outing, the bride's family invited the city's homeless for a once in a lifetime meal at one of sacramento's finest hotels. (erika craycraft/homeless) "i think it's very generous actually. to lose out on something so important to yourself and then give it to someone else is really giving." many came with their families, giving their kids a rare night out. (rashad abdullah/homeless) "when you're going through a hard time and struggle, for you to get out to do something different and with your family, it was really a blessing." reporter standup: the food is similar to what you'd find at the

(kari duane/would-be- brides' mother) "i feel a lot of heartache and heartbreak for her, but i will take away something good from this, i will." turning a night that was supposed to be about their family, into one that takes care of others. sabrina: part of the 35- thousand dollar wedding price tag includes a non-refundable honeymoon. so...mother and daughter will take the trip

elias: a coach who also teaches has been fired after beeing accused of inappropriately sleeping next to a student. elias: kyle ewinger was fired on thursday, after the superintendent bill walked in on him sleeping next to an elementary student in his middle school social studies classroom. ewinger is the head football studies teacher ocheyedan (oh- chee'-duhn).. but some say the what it seems. during last night's school board meeting, ewinger said this student is more he says they got back late from an away football game and the student's grandmother's house was classroom.

"he corrects all of his homework, he has football kids tutoring him, he got him to summer school every day, he feeds him, he gives him allowance...he does all of the things a parent does for a child " says kim van der sloot, parent of three in the sibley- ocheyedan district. elias: the school board voted to terminate the teacher on the recommendation of school superintendant bill boer. the county sheriff was notified of the situation, but no criminal investigation is being done. "after their investigation, if they felt some kind of criminal charges would've been appropriate, then i assume that the probably will contact us then" says kevin wollmuth, chief deputy. elias: until then, the school is conducting itsr own internal investigation. sabrina: a woman who ran a daycare out of her home has pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment.... all part of a plea deal. 29 year old

telling the jury he doesnt remember anything from the shooting until police arrested him look for the latest here on local 5. elias: nitrates in iowa's waterways has been a major concern this year...even leading to a lawsuit filed by des moines water works.. the suit names three iowa counties...claimin g they're to blame for nitrates in the raccoon river. the trial isn't expected to begin until august of next year... but the issue of nitrates in the water had lead to a discussion on farming tactics and possible ways to cut them from getting into the water supply... sabrina: right now the main concern for most iowa farmers....harves ting their crops from the field. but some farmers still have some plants growing in the field this fall. elias: they're called cover crops....and deborah souverain explains how these crops help keep soil healthy. explains how
5:30 am
these crops help keep soil healthy. help keep soil healthy. " "most crops are...dried out around this type of year. but you'll see nothing but green on john wilcox's correctionville farm. natpop -- john pulling up radishes. john plants cover crops during the fall....to promote healthier soil. "soil has a lot of phosphorus and potassium and our crops, soybeans and corn, have a difficult time extracting those from soil. but he says cover crops help. this year..he's testing out radishes and field peas. tillage radish and field peas have an easier time getting it out of the soil. so they absorb it into the plant..and when they die they release it back out and then the soybean and the corn can get the nutrient easier now because it's in a more organic form," said john cover crops increase the number of organisms living in the soil. it also reduces erosion..and cuts the amount of nitrates that leak into ground water. and those aren't the only benefits john has reaped. "i saw pretty close to a five bushel increase on my soybeans where we did it," said wilcox, plants cover crops. john says it cost him about 25 dollars per acre...to plant the crops using a crop duster.
5:31 am
but farmers can get financial assistance. "those incentives are available to producers who may have never tried cover crops before and would like cover crops, something new. we also have cost share incentives available for farmers who done cover crops in the past and would like to continue to do so utilizing some of that money, said evans. each cover crop provides different soil benefits... and john says they're sticking around to see what they are. sabrina: we're back with meterologist sam schreier... sam: (sam adlibs) sam: we're back with meterologist sam schreier... sam: (sam adlibs) sam:

"22:48:51- why would
5:34 am
you consider transferring the administration of that program to out of state companies? 22:49:10 branstad - we're doing what 25 other states have done. going to a manages care system to better coordinate benefits. " sabrina: the hawk-i board was not asked if it approves of the governor's decision to try and privatize the hawk-i program. "13:03:20 i imagie most members of hte hawk-i board would say if it's not broken why fix it. i would imagie if we had an opportunity to vote on it, we'd keep the existing program as it is. " sabrina: there could be a legal issue here as well. the iowa attorney general is looking at whether the governor overstepped when he made the decision to privatize hawk-i without approval from the board. and none of this is a done deal...it would still require federal approval. sabrina: so be sure to share your thoughts...shoul d medicaid in iowa be privatized? or do you think it should stay the way it is? let us know -- we may use your comments on-air.
