"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" sabrina good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm sabrina ahmed. sabrina: local five will be keeping a close eye on any possible developments in the polson case today... sabrina: the jury will return for further deliberations this morning... prosecutors say polson went on a shooting spree in pleasant hill last november, seriously injuring two people and nearly missing a third. he faces three attempted murder charges

weapons charges. polson himself took the stand, telling the jury he doesnt remember anything from the shooting until police arrested him look for the latest here on local 5. sabrina: and don't forget -- you can follow this trial and all your local news on our website -- that's we are iowa dot com. sabrina:: a woman who ran a daycare out of her home has pleaded guilty to two counts of child endangerment.... all part of a plea deal. 29 year old christina williamson was arrested back in may after her husband secretly recorded her abusing children in her care. in exchange for pleading guilty to the two counts of child endangerment .... one a felony and the other a misdeamonor ... other charges were dropped. "i handled the children roughly. i handled a-n roughly. i handled nr roughly to the point where one was crying and you could tell there might have been potential injury. sabrina: williamson is free on bond for now until her

sabrina: an internal investigation has cleared a des any wrongdoing in a june officer- shooting... sabrina: found no reason charges in the department senior police officer vanessa miller,, during a routine traffic stop, another vehicle pulled up to the officers car, sqaud car's doors. the driver of of his car and was acting then drove off sparking a low speed chase. he pulled a u- turn and approached officer miller's squad car. she fired at him, he died from that wound. look for more on this story later today, as local five sits down with des moines police for more on their internal investigation....in cluding dash cam video of the incident. sabrina::: west des moines police have asked for the public's help in identifying a suspect in a stolen credit card case. this image was taken from a business where the suspect used the stolen information to make fraudulent purchases.. around forty such transactions

anyone with information can contact police or the polk county crime stoppers at the number on your screen. sabrina: a new case of the emerald ash borer to report this morning...now in linn county. sabrina: this makes the 29th county in iowa to have a confirmed report of the invasive insect. a state agricultural official found an infestation of the bug at a rest stop along interstate 380, about a half-mile north of the linn county-johnson county line. the emerald ash trees by feeding on their inner bark, disrupting the flow of water and nutrients. tree and arborists say if land already, they need to take action and make a include removing a tree. trees forever tree that didn't have a really young tree, like an ash tree that's under ten years at probably removing that tree or looking to replace that tree with another tree.">" sabrina: arborists say people shouldn't

assume that their ash trees need to come down. ash trees can be saved if they are healthy by using pesticide treatments that need to be applied every two years. sabrina: nitrates in iowa's waterways has been a major concern this year...even leading to a lawsuit filed by des moines water works.. the suit names three iowa counties...claimin g they're to blame for nitrates in the raccoon river. the trial isn't expected to begin until august of next year... but the issue of nitrates in the water had lead to a discussion on farming tactics and possible ways to cut them from getting into the water supply... sabrina: right now the main concern for most iowa farmers....harves ting their crops from the field. but some farmers still have some plants growing in the field this fall. they're called cover crops....and deborah souverain explains how these crops help keep soil healthy. " "most crops are...dried out around this type of year. but you'll see nothing but green on john wilcox's correctionville farm. natpop -- john pulling up radishes. john plants cover crops during the fall....to promote healthier soil. "soil has a lot of phosphorus and potassium and our

time extracting those from soil. but he says cover crops help. this year..he's testing out radishes and field peas. tillage radish and field peas have an easier time getting it out of the soil. so they absorb it into the plant..and when they die they release it back out and then the soybean and the corn can get the nutrient easier now because it's in a more organic form," said john cover crops increase the number of organisms living in the soil. it also reduces erosion..and cuts the amount of nitrates that leak into ground water. and those aren't the only benefits john has reaped. "i saw pretty close to a five bushel increase on my soybeans where we did it," said wilcox, plants cover crops. john says it cost him about 25 dollars per acre...to plant the crops using a crop duster. but farmers can get financial assistance. "those incentives are available to producers who may have never tried cover crops before and would like cover crops, something new. we also have cost share incentives available for farmers who done cover crops in the past and would like to continue to do so utilizing some of that money, said evans. each cover crop

abc's chief justice correspondent pierre thomas is tracking the case " the hacker, who claims he's a high school teenager, angry about the plight of the palestinians posted on twitter the names and what he says are the social security numbers of a who's who in the intelligence community. the list includes homeland security secretary jeh johnson and a host of current and former senior security officials. the stolen information allegedly was gleaned from a breach of private email accounts containing the background security files and other documents of cia director john brennan. the hacker claims he infiltrated brennan's account by tricking verizon and aol employees into resetting his password. the twitter account posting this information was abruptly taken down last night. today the fbi and secret service are racing to identify the hacker and see if they can build a case against him. live close: it doesn't appear that any classified information was taken. but these top officials face the prospect of more hacking and further leaks of their private information." sabrina:

to look and shop for things now, look for home decor, fall fashion, even toys -- i'd pick those up now because you're going to find great discounts. if you want to save some time -- i would look to november and black friday for things like home electronics, and even computers. with the rise in online shopping options, brick-and-mortar shops will offer a number of incentives, so shoppers may want to make an early trip to the mall to beat the crowds, and see what's in-store. branstand has iowa lawmakers asking question... the state leader wants to privatize medicaid. however, state legislators want to know how this will benefit everyone. state senator rob hogg has even questioned the governor on specifics about his plan and its benefits..... under the umbrella of medicaid, is a program called hawk-i. it's an option for families who need insurance for their kids. local 5 asked the governor about his plan during his weekly press conference monday. coach and social studies teacher in sibley- ocheyedan (oh- chee'-duhn).. but some say the situation is not what it seems. during last night's school board meeting, ewinger said this student is more like his son. he says they got back late from an away football game and the student's grandmother's house was locked so they slept in the classroom. "he corrects all of his homework, he has football kids tutoring him, he got him to summer school every day, he feeds him, he gives him allowance...he does all of the things a parent does for a sloot, parent of three in the sibley- ocheyedan district. sabrina: the school board voted to terminate the teacher on the recommendation of school superintendant bill boer. the county sheriff was notified of the situation, but no criminal investigation is being done. wollmuth, chief deputy. sabrina: school is conducting itsr own internal investigation. sabrina: meanwhile -- a crash in buchanan county sent several people to the hospital... around eight- thirty yesterday morning a car crashed into a minibus at the intersection of highway 281 and fairbank-amish boulevard police say the car failed to stop at the intersection, then hit the bus as it was traveling east. following impact, the bus rolled trapping one of the the vehicle. first responders were able to get everyone out. three people had to be taken to the hospital by ambulance...a fourth was transported by helicotper. " when you're dealing with buses or big vehicles, you deal with more injuries," wolfgram said. academy of pediatrics saying no amount of alcohol should be considered safe during any time of pregnancy. sot i think their point is it is better to be safe than sorry the new guidelines identifies prenatal exposure to alcohol as the leading preventable cause of birth defects and intellectual disabilities in children. sot dr. richard besser : once you know you are pregnant or you are trying to get pregnant you shouldn't be drinking alcohol. still, according to one recent study by the cdc, ten percent of pregnant women reported drinking alcohol during pregnancy. sot: i have had occasionally like one glass of wine ld: did either of you ever have a conversation with your mother about if she drank alcohol when she was pregnant? ag: she told me occasionally she'd have a glass of wine or maybe a beer. studies have been mixed on effect of alcohol consumption on babies. sot dr. richard besser: some of the problems from alcohol may not show up until the child is a teenager so while the american academy of pediatrics isn't saying a glass of wine is harmful, they're saying they don't know if it's safe.

"finding purpose in retirement" is the theme for cisen's 2nd annual senior life conference at the prairie meadows conference center on october 26th. the educating and and those who care for them, is returning a row after 2014's attendance of more that 230 participants and nearly 50 elder care agencies and organizations. as it event is free to participants.
