local 5 news midday...i'm amanda krenz. amanda first - a quick heads up to drivers around the intersection of merle hay road and aurora avenue. police say there's a head on semi truck and a car there. on injuries or will be cleaned we'll keep you hear more. amanda moving now to news just in this morning.... democratic candidate drops out of the race -- following jim webb's switch to campaign and joe biden's decision not to run. amanda this time it's former rhode island governor lincoln chafee in a press release today, chafee told supporters that he decided to end his campaign "after much thought". he later made a formal announcement at a women's leadership forum in washington. "(lincoln chafee/(d) former rhode island governor) "but after much thought, i have decided to end my campaign for the president today. (aww's heard from the audience). thank you." " amanda the former republican was never a serious factor in the

he struggled in the polls and in fundraising, and performed poorly in last week's democratic presidential debate. amanda/lam meanwhile -- an eleven-hour hearing yesterday centered on the 20-12 benghazi attack left former secretary of state hillary clinton without a voice. the highly- anticipated hearing including heated exchanges...most notably among members of the committee... despite the tension, clinton continued to deliver the same information she has told other congressional committees. " (trey gowdy/(r) south carolina) in terms of her testimony, i don't know that she testified that much differently today than the previous times she's testified." amanda: clinton insists she has done nothing wrong. the committee still has more witnesses to hear from as it continues its probe. amanda: now here is a look at the latest iowa poll numbers on the democratic side... now that webb, biden, and chafee are out of the presidential race, only three candidates remain- hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and martin o'malley.

according to a new quinnipiac poll released this morning, clinton leads with 51% among caucusgoers, with sanders not far behind at 40%, results were comparable to the bloomberg politics/des moines register poll released earlier this week with clinton at 48 % among caucusgoers, sanders not far behind at 41%. and gov. o'malley at the bottom with only 2%, both polls have hinted that the numbers may continue to shift though... amanda: according to j. ann selzer, the president of selzer & co, who conducted the iowa poll taken earlier this vice president announcement that he would not be running is "good news for in that you have vote that was with vice president biden and is now free to go someplace else." amanda: switching gears now-- to a big storm threatening the eastern coast of mexico today, amanda: hurricane patricia is now the strongest eastern north

following since the beginning -- the bakken pipeline. amanda: and for the first time ... an entire county is standing up to the iowa utilities board ... urging them to deny permits for the bakken pipeline. supervisors in boone county unanimously voted to adopt a resolution against the project....voicing concern over property rights ... the environment and resources. " "i would think if you had strong messages coming from county supervisors along the route, i would hope that that would have an impact on the decision making process." amanda: this resolution doesn't necessarily mean the pipeline would be a no-go in boone county. ultimately that's up to the iowa utilities board. they will make their decision on november 16th. amanda: in cherokee county landowners have filed an eminent domain lawsuit against

the pipeline. but the ruling from the judge didn't swing in anyone's favor, and that made the plaintiffs upset. the decision was that they didn't have enough to back up their lawsuit yet. the court advised that they exhaust all avenues through the state first. amanda here's a look at where the bakken pipeline could eventually go. it'll carry crude oil from north dakota to illinois--cutting diagonally across the state. of course we'll keep you posted on any developing details. amanda: let's move to a story topping your national headlines now... amanda and over to tennessee where police say one person is dead after a shooting on the campus of tennessee state university in nashville. amanda two others were injured in the shooting at an outdoor courtyard at the campus. police say the shooting happened after an apparent dispute over a dice game. a university spokeswoman said two students were taken to a hospital with non-life- threatening injuries. it wasn't immediately clear if those students were hit by gunfire or injured in another way. no word right

amanda now to a lawsuite filed against nutrition superstore gnc, accused of selling supplements spiked with synthetic drugs. abc's tj holmes has the details... this morning, g-n-c hit with a major lawsuit -- accused of knowingly selling fitness supplements advertised as "all- natural" -- that were actually spiked with synthetic drugs. the oregon attorney general, ellen rosenblum (gfx) going after gnc for allegedly misrepresenting twenty two workout and fat-burner supplements, (pg1) stating some contained two synthetic drugs: "picamilon "?a prescription drug in russia used to treat a variety of neurological conditions." (pg5) and bmpea -- "?a chemical similar to amphetamine"? associated with certain types of strokes. (pg8) the attorney general, also claiming g-n-c knew both products were considered unlawful dietary ingredients. gnc has come under scrutiny before. in march, the company agreed to stricter testing of its herbal supplements after a new york attorney general investigation revealed some of them didn't actually contain any of the herbs on the label. sot - eric schneiderman, ny attorney general but this time, the

"you're wathcing local 5 news midday in hd with amanda krenz and we are iowas most accurate forecast. this is local 5 midday. we are iowa (music sting)" amanda: welcome back -- moving now to another case today of secret service officials falling asleep on the job. amanda it's the latest incident in a bad year for the organization. abc's pierre thomas explains. two uniformed officers- caught--sleeping on the job-napping no less--one while on duty at a foreign diplomat's residence---the other at the white house. [gfx] a new inspector general management alert claims inadequate staffing and scheduling played a role in officer fatigue and "may pose an immediate or potential danger to u.s. secret service officers and those whom they protect." (new bite rep. jason chaffetz) " this unfortunately is not one or two people falling asleep on the job it is a consequence of bad management."

but the secret service objects, saying the officers were disciplined and that the sleeping officers-- and only them--were at fault. the latest revelation coming on the heels of the recent disclosure that secret service agents had been rifling through the employment files of congressman jason chaefetz the allegation that senior secret service officials were contemplating embarrassing him about his former application for a job at the agency. nats all this, after that fence jumper got inside the white house, this following allegations of excessive drinking and a prostitution scandal amanda: in local police news...not all officers were asleep on the job. yesterday in west des moines, officers took part in thursday's tip- a-cop event at the local red robin restaurant by helping take orders, clear tables, and serve patrons...they got to raise money for a

good cause. the event benefits special olympics iowa... though the work is quite different than what they are accustomed to, officers say it is a rewarding experience. we have fun doing this kind of thing talking to people do something thats a little outside the box for police officers that we're not to seeing or doing so yeah it's a great time sabrina: since 2005, the tip-a-cop campaign has raised almost five million dollars for the law enforcement torch run.. amanda: meanwhile you can have your chance to sit down and speak with local police this weekend. pleasant hill police will be meeting and greeting the residents they protect on a daily basis during an event. the city is hosting a meet the chief and officer event saturday at the police station. the event helps connect officers with neighbors...allo wing them to strengthen the community. amanda sam, it's kind of rainy outside. will there be a better forecast for our weekend? sam i'll have my full

new details this morning in a late-night fire in thayer... amanda: fire officials believe the house fire just south of the metro may have been caused by a gas or electrical problem. fire crews received the call just after 9-30...and arrived on scene to a fully engulfed home. the structure is a total loss...luckily, no one was living there at the time. the fire remains under investigation. amanda: good news for iowa's good news for iowa's schools...a report from the u-s department of education shows the hawkeye state has the highest high school graduation rate in the country. iowa topped the list with 90 - point - five percent of students in the class of 20-14 graduating within four years. this is the fourth year in a row iowa has increased its graduation rates. the national average for the 2013-2014 school

year was 81 percent . amanda: meanwhile some not so good news for a local school -- and an unexpected early start to the weekend for students at roosevelt high school. around 12-30 thursday, classes were dismissed for the day because about half of the teachers here were feeling under the weather. the district thinks they have a culprit, from a wednesday, but the health department is investigating.

something else that led to the sick teachers. amanda: and out east... students in the dubuque school district now have a harder time sending selfies through the social media app snapchat. the district blocked the app from its wi-fi network this week. administrators say the app can be dangerous....and has been talking about doing it for some time. katie wiedemann has more.
