the w.h.o. advisory committee also finding that unprocessed red at is probably carcogenic. the report, which was based on an analysis of more than 800 studies, asserts that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day can increase the risk of colon cancer by 18%. here's some food for thought. the 50 gramsms cited ithe report is the equivalent of 1.8 ounces of meat. but a typical deli sandwich has more than 4.5 ounces of meat. and this is what 1.8 ounces looks like. according to the report, 34,000 cancerer deaths uld be attributed to diets high in processed meat in 2012. that's out of the 8.2 million deaths caused worldwide by cancer. to put that in perspective, a million of those deaths could be attributed to smoking. the w.h.o. panel did say red meat does have nutritional value. but the meat industry is crying foul. the north american meat institute telling abc news in a statement that classifying red

hazards defies both common sense and numerous studies showing no correlation between meat and cancer. it's also recommended that you not fry or grill your meat on charcoal which can release carcinogens. linsey davis, abc news, new york. >> the death toll is expected to rise following a powerful earthquake that struck parts of south asia. between 300 and 400 people are confirmed dead so far, most of them in pakistan. and in afghanistan, there were 33 victims including 12 schoolgirls who were trampled trying to leave a sway agbuilding. the 7.5 quake the strongest to hit the region in recent years. this morning, canadian authorities say the investigation into the sinking of a whale watching boat could take several months. a survivor of the incident claims a sudden wave capsized the boat sending everyone on board into the water. at least five people were killed. one remains missing.

>> reporter: 27 people were on board the tour boat sunday afternoon when it went under. at least five british nationals are confirmed dead. another 21 people rescued from the 55 degree water and one remains missing. > it appears the incident happened so quickly, the crew didn't have the an opportunity to send out a mayday. >>epter: witnesses describe a mad dash of local boats rushing to the scene including several operatedy native american tribes pulling susurvivors t one by one. >> the paramedics were working with people in the boats. those who were c criticall injured. >> reporter: investigators with canada's transpoportation fety board are now on scene. >> it's much too early to say what the causes and contriributing factors of this accident might be. >> the leviathan 2 departed from tufino on a calm day out scouting for killer hails. because of its large size, passenengers wernot required to wear life jaets on board.

>> this vessel operated for 20 years with a perfect safety record. >> reporte an underwater recovery team is helping the coast guard with search and rescue efforts. investigators are interviewing the crew, passengers and looking at the maintenance history of that boat. >> brandi hitt reporting from los angeles. thank you. a tanker barge that sank in lake erie 78 years ago appears to be leaking oil. the argo was being towed to a refinery in new jersey when it capsized in a gale in 1937. when crews found the barge two months ago, they noticed tiny beads of oil bubbling up to the surface, then evaporating. next they need to find the source of the leak and try to stop it. the suspect in the deadly hopecoming parade crash also appeared before a judge for the first time. prosecutors say she intentionally drove into the crowd of spectators. her attorney says s she suffs from mental illness and is suicidal. abc's ryan owens reports from stillwater, oklahoma. >> reporter: the driver seen plowing into a homecoming parade

on this distributing videos being held on a million dollars bond. the judge calling 25-year-old adacia chambers "a direct threat to the community." >> we're going to need a bunch of help. we got a car through a crowd up here. >> reporter: prosecutors are awaititing toxicogy results but believe chambers was high on drugs when she got behind the wheel saturday morning, killing four and injuring a staggering 47 people at oklahoma state university. among the dead, a retired professor and his wife, an mba student and a 2-year-old boy. chambers family is coming to her defense. >> she wouldn't have done this purposely. i just don't believe that in my heart. >> reporter: at her first court appearance, the judge ordered a psychological evaluation. her attorney says she's mentally ill and doesn't remember the crash. precutors plan to charge chambers with four counts of second-degree murder. ey warn the judge another victim of this crash is in very grave condition and a fifth charge may be coming. ryan owens, abc news

an investigation has been launched after a classroom video in south carolina went viral. it shows a school resource officer trying to remove a student from class by tipping her sk backward till she falls on the floor. the officer then tossing her several feet across the floor and eventually handcuffs her. a sheriff's spokesman on what started it all. >> what we do know from the vio is that the student that was disturbing the classroom was asked to leave, refused to leave. >> the officer has been placed on leave. the school board chairman said late last night the amount of force used appears to be unnecessary and excessive. >> wow, that is so hard to watch. the mississippi state flag is no longer flying at ole miss. the university of mississippi ordered campus police to remove the flag which contains a controversial confederate battle emblem. university leaders agrd to take it down after the student body, faculty and staff, voed in

favor of removing it. the flag will be preserved in the university archives. breaking overnight, a break-through in washington. white house and top lawmakers have reached a tentative budget deal to head off a government default next week. the deal could lessen the chances of a government shutdown. it would increase military and domestic spending but cut social security and medicare. a vote in the house could come as early as tomorrow. a heavy rain left over from hurricane patricia is soaking the tennsee valley this morning d it is moving north. the stormyeather triggered major flash flooding across louisiana. children had to be rescued after their school bus got stuck in high water. more than inches of rain came down from new orleans to baton rouge. and the water in some spots around lsu was more than three feet deep. the drenching storm system is moving, as we mentioned in slow motion towards the northeast. expect downpours across a wide region in the hours ahead. molly cochran has an update.

and dads say their children's safety comes first. it is tuesday, october 27th. from abc news, this is "world news now." all right. and we do say good morning on this tuesday. i'm kendis gibson. >> i'm reena ninan. do you remember that commercial that wouldsay, "where's the beef?" >> yes, yes, she'sow no longer with us. of course, we get these dire warnings coming out this morning about meat, still the centerpiece of most american diets. the world health organization reviewing the data and finds troubling links to colon cancer and possibly other cancers, as well. abc's linsey davis with the details. >> reporter: alarming news about foods so many of us eat every day. bacon, hot dogs, lunch meat, all now classified in the same category as cigarettes and asbestos. they can cause cancer, according to the world health organization, and that's not all.

the w.h.o. advisory committee also finding that unprocessed red meat is probably carcinogenic. the report, which was based on an analysis of more than 800 studies, asserts that simply eating 50 grams of processed meat each day can increase the risk of colon cancer by 18%. here's some food for thought. the 50 grams cited in the report is the equivalt of 1.8 ounces of meat. but a typical deli sandwich has more than 4.5 ounces of meat. and this is what 1.8 ounces looks like. according to the report, 34,000 cancer deaths could be attributed to diets high in processemeat in 2012. that's out of the 8.2 million deaths caused rldwide by cancer. to put that in perspective, a million of those deaths could be attributed to smoking. the w.o. panel did say red meat does have nutritional value. but the meat industry is crying foul. the north american meat institute telling abc news in a statement that classifying red

and processed meat as cancer hazards defies both common sense and numerous studies showing no correlation between meat and cancer. it's also recommended that you not fry or grill your meat on charcoal which can release carcinogens. lins davis, abc news, new york. the death toll is expected to rise following a earthquake that struck parts of south asia. between 300 and 400 people are confirmed dead so far, most of them in pakistan. and in afghanistan, there were 33 victims including 12 schoolgirls who were trampled trying to leave a swaying a building. the 7.5 quake the strongesest toto hit the region in recent years. this morning, canadian authorities say the investigation into the sinking of a whale watching boat could take several months. a survivor of the incident claims a sudden wave capsized the boatat sendingveryone on board into the water. at least five people were killed. one remains missing. abc's neal karlinksky is in

without a problem until now. neal karlinsky, abc news. the suspect in that deadly homecoming parade crash appeared before a judge this morning. it's the first time on monday that adacia chambersas ordered ld on a $1 million bond facing four counts of second degree murder. the prosecutor said chambers purposely drove around a barricade and ran a red light before plowing into parade spectators. her father says she suffers from mental illness. a school resource officer in south carolina has been placed on leave after t this video went viral. incredible. it shows the officer trying to remove a student from class by tipping her desk backward until she falls on the floor. the officer then actually tosses the girl several feet across the floor until he eventually handcuffs her. the south carolina aclu calllls it an egregious use off force. could you imagine if that was your child and you saw this video?
