9:30 am
the's hill, the governor's mansion here in des moines. the governor's son, eric and his wife are the first lady of iowa, chris branstad, will take us on a private tower of scare-us hill. and tell us ghost stories about the governor's mansion here in iowa. all that and more on "roske on politics." >> we will become a rich and great nation again. >> we have the ten one-tenth of one percent. >> keep negotiating, and that's what they did. >> the thing i have been concerned about in this nation for the last few years have not changed. >> we're chaffing with chief national correspondent. >> governor bobby jindal. >> u.s. senator --
9:31 am
>> i love it. >> aloha. >> state senator maria chappelle >> sometimes you don't even have to win the caucus. if you come in a good second or third and no one expected it, that gives you a boost. >> somebody said -- >> any candidate who is seeking to earn the awesome and sacred trust of the people of the united states has to engage with the people of iowa. >> the highest ranking democrat in the state of iowa. senator joe lieberman. >> it's fried snickers, it's like heaven. >> this is a dumb way to do it. at the end of the day, brad pitt will be on our stage. >> i think it's important because it's the first contest. >> the potential clinton-castro ticket.
9:32 am
to pick who their vice-president will be. block >> first time voting? >> and this is one of the most important elections. in over a decade. so much change can happen. let's go!
9:33 am
last six weeks have learned a lot about hillary. what she is for, why she is running, and what kind of president she would be. she's a pretty good bartender, too. it's been an interesting month for our family. seven weeks ago our granddaughter had her first birthday, and then we celebrate our 40th anniversary. and had an amazing debate. and i have to say, you know i was immensely proud of her and i thought she did agreed.
9:34 am
you know, all disagreement wes had over an issue, every different decision was over whether this or that course would be best for the american people. >> so bernie sanders just finished his speech. we just left katy perry on stage. i would say definitely comparable to the cause that katy perry has. another group here as well. this tradition was actually started with the obama campaign. president -- then senator-obama had an event like this and had the drum corps and marched to the event. >> how is the campaign going? >> got to wait. >> bernie, bernie, bernie. >> ever been some something like this before?
9:35 am
nothing like this. [cheering] >> make people feel better about themselves. >> i actually take action. >> she doesn't have the guts to talk about. >> just saying, don't stick your flag pole here. >> gun control can only hurt us. it cannot help us. it can kill us, though. >> i'm rick cline and i'll be moderating the last debate between democratic congress -- >> we can overcome the strongest
9:36 am
we are truly brothers and sisters.
9:37 am
i'll be watching. >> just marched with the bernie sanders. >> yesterday i formally announced i am backing bernie sanders. i'd always planned to, but this is the right time. there's a lot of momentum right now. this is a great time to just really get behind this revolution. >> we're at the katy perry show and then president clinton but this is something special. >> really is a revolution and it was special. i'm old enough to remember marching in the '60s. now, i was this big. this is really harkening back to
9:38 am
urgency, passion, humanity of people wanting to change things for people. >> i was talking to a woman and said the difference here, we're not talking about what is good for me or me, we're talking about what guess for us. there's another name for that called a republic, of, for, and by the people and that's what this is about, and seeing the energy, older people, younger people, bernie really crosses all the demographic lines, and it's ex-sill rating. >> how is his run for congress going. >> exactly like i expected it to go. when i entered this race i was a distanced third. i'm still a distant third. i don't have machinery because i've run before but i'm more optimistic today than i've ever been. let everybody else fight. i get to go to the people and talk to them, inspire them hopefully, and that -- i'm feeling people becoming involved because of my involvement.
9:39 am
and that's why i wanted to do this in the first place. >> give folks who don't know a sense of context, how big is the j.j. dinner terms of politics. >> it's the crown jewel. the media comes from around the globe. you can define as a president your candidacy. tonight i would be introduced with what i wrote but we don't get to speak. i but this is about looking at the democrats in iowa, the enthusiasm, the commitment, and the presidential candidates get to possibly create that pivotal moment that makes them stand out.
9:40 am
obama in 2007. here with state senator matt mccoy. >> we're ready for a big night. >> you have a hillary button on. why have you chosen to support her. >> she is the most -- running for president. she is going to do an enormously great job as president, and she
9:41 am
brings such a wealth of experience to the whole ticket this year. i think that she is going to be a very fresh perspective on some of the things that, quite frankly, have not been addressed, like gun control, like dealing with mental health issues. she is taking some positions that i think really show her to be somebody that is not locked in a box. and so she is definitely willing to challenge the establishment. >> how long have you been serving the state of iowa. >> i've been in the legislature -- this 24th year. >> seems to me -- this j-j
9:42 am
what is your sense where this fits in? >> this is huge. obviously a presidential year, you rally the party and build the troops and create the momentum to bring this candidate forward, whoever the candidate is going to be, for the general election. so we're really doing our party building tonight and that has implications on the state legislature, the down-ballot races. so we're very committed to making sure that the party is organized and everybody that can participate and wants to participate has a place at the table. >> are you surprised the democratic ticket there's only three candidates? were queue expecting more? >> honestly i believed all along this would be a competitive race. i think that bernie sanders, and his crew, have brought an
9:43 am
enthusiasm to this process. i think martin o'malley -- he hasn't shown himself in the polls to be formidable yet, i think he has an opening, we believe he has an opening. so, i think that the clinton campaign is taking every one of them seriously. after watching their debate i believe they are in fact really addressing the issues that are on people's minds. so i feel very proud of the campaigns at this point. >> here with tom miller, the longest serving state attorney general in the country. tonight we're at the j-j dinner how much does this stack up to others. >> it's one of the best. we had one eight years ago, probably two of the -- there was one a long time ago now where carter really captured the crowd. those three are probably the top of recent history.
9:44 am
>> were you in attendance the night carter did his j-j dinner? >> i was and it was a great performance. barack was amazing and hillary will be terrific. >> i'm told the jimmy carter campaign for the iowa caucus produces they validity of the caucus and put it on the map. how did he do that campaign? >> he was a virtual unknown. when he started running for president and came to iowa. it was an organizational story. he spent a lot of time here, talked to a lot of people and built an organization of supporters throughout the states that got him -- he won iowa ask that really catapulted him to the nomination the presidency. >> you have been a part of iowa public life for decades. what do you think about the iowa caucus? does this state deserve first in the nation status? >> absolutely. it's a great place to start for
9:45 am
a couple reasons. one, you can't winnoid with media. you have to talk to people to earn their support. iowans are wonderful people. they're friendly, open, they take this very seriously and give the candidate a chance to make a decision. that's a great way to begin. >> have three candidates right no new the democratic race for the presidency. are you going to be endorsing in this race? >> i've been for hillary clinton for a number of months now. i'm a great believer in hillary. she has an incredible ability to be president. i think she has the strength and the judgment and she knows politics and works hard. most of all, she is focused on the issues to help the middle class. income inequality is a huge issue. she is going to do the most in my opinion to deal with that. >> were you a supporter of her in 2008, her first election for president? >> no.
9:46 am
i was a chair of the obama campaign. >> okay. were you surprised that president obama asked her to be secretary of state? >> a little bit but not a big surprise. it was a great choice. she does -- he does things on merit and she was the best possible choice and that was proven by her work as secretary of state. >> nobody in the 21st century economy is going to be able to do what they want to do with
9:47 am
great education. >> more like a soccer game than a political event. these are the bernie sanders people. i think we're about three minutes away from the start of it. i can't hear the music at all right now. i can only hear this. >> here with -- running for state newscast. you were just on stage carrying the flag. why is that. you're in the military. >> the iowa veterans caucus committee member. we are the color guard. this is a reminder to everyone this all about our citizenship,
9:48 am
patriotism. i'm a dedicated democrat but i'm a soldier, too, and it's a great honor to be part of. >> you're now running for state senate. what inspired you to do this? >> well, a lot of things. really, going back to my military career, being a part of the movement for the country, fighting for freedom, and coming home and really needing to find a mission for knives. every got out of the service i still had this desire to do something bigger and be part of a larger team, and when i was in the service and i didn't know where i would go, and getting encouragement from other people about taking my ideas on legislation instead of the way i was doing on my military duty. that is my new mission so that's where i found my group. >> i've been asking both elected officials and candidates tonight if you picked one of the three that you like, have you endorsed anybody yet? >> i haven't actually. >> what are you looking for in a candidate?
9:49 am
think that credibility and trustworthiness is at the top. it's a very difficult thing to figure out because there are some men media messages that getting to know the genuine heart of a person is difficult. right now for me. definitely a hard thing to be able to put together to know for sure where i'm going with that. but that would be one of the issues. besides all of the issues the democrats are committed to as far as people, the woman's right to choose and all the things that go along with the democrats. >> at the beginning of the week there were five democratic candidates. now are there three. are you surprised there's so few candidates on the democratic side. >> not really. i think we started out strong with some real, viable candidates, and so i think it's a reflection of genuine interest and the cream of the crop. >> have you been to the j-j dinner before?
9:50 am
>> describe tonight. seems crazy to me. >> it is, some the energy is contagious and aim glad. that's what we need to carry with us when we go out there and start making phone calls and knocking on doors and getting involved in the process. renews our energy to say this is valley we're alive and part of it all. >> speaking of knocking on doors you're running for state senate. how is it going. >> it's going fantastic. i love the opportunity to speak to people, hear what is important to them to get feedback about them from the other candidates that i'm opposing, that haved a experience with. so for me it's going really well. >> is this your first run for office? >> it is. >> is what you expected in. >> you know, think i went into it with a military mindset that expect nothing. so i really didn't know. some things yes, some have been surprising, but i think i'm pretty good at adapting and changing, and so right now i think --
9:51 am
>> you said you haven't endorsed one but which speaker are you looking forward to the most? >> i love to hear martin o'malley.
9:52 am
thank you for chatting. outside of this event, i wanted show to you something very special i did yesterday. as you are watching this on november 1st. yesterday would have been halloween. yesterday i got a private tour of the governor's mansion here in iowa. i was shown around by eric branstad, the governor's son, and the governor's wife, the first lady of iowa, kris branstad. they shored me scare-us hill because they decorated and have a bunch of events and showed us around. eric told a couple of ghost stories. let's look at this fun visit i had yesterday to the governor's mansion. >> this is my first time in the governor's mansion. not only is the building itself amazing and was built over three years -- right around 1870.
9:53 am
>> '66 -- 1866 to 1869. we're still learning things about the history. >> for those of you watching this on the east coast, that's right, governor branstad's father is the longes serving governor in american history so honored you would show us around today. we'll show you folks a little bit more of the house. let's take a look. >> on the day of the birthday, falls down, and some -- the structure of the painting is a mystery. >> woo-woo-woo. >> my grandpa edward, my dad's dad, who died a couple years back, he -- and he had stayed and he had left -- actually left the door was dead-bolted from the inside.
9:54 am
>> they had to do what? >> they did this. so, dad stayed here, and this -- you have to turn all the way like this to lock. so they had to come in from the outside and get through here to unlock this. >> i see. i stayed in here.
9:55 am
