elias: the topic of emminent domain has become a controversial issue since the proposal for the bakken pipeline to cut through iowa.. farmers and landowners have become concerned that emminent domain will be used to secure the path for the pipeline which connects south dakota to illinois. governor terry branstad was asked his thoughts on using such a tactic. ""i think eminent domain should be used only sparingly. i think there are times that it may be appropriate, so don't say a blanket statement that eminent domain should never be used," said branstad. " elias: now, the iowa utilities board still has not given its final approval on the pipeline. they are holding another series of hearings to let the public weigh in on the topic. the next one is november 12th. sabrina: a public meeting will be held this week to help educate iowans about a growing pest in the state... sabrina: with almost thirty counties reporting infestations of the emerald ash borer, iowa officials are

the american dream. it's promised that if you work hard...you'll make it. 10:15- (justin welsh- living with student debt) "we're always told go to college to get that better job that pays a bit more.' and justin welsh did just that. he did what most college bound kids do...he took out a federal loan... and went to grandview university.. graduating this spring with a degree in graphic journalism, 10:52 (justin welsh ) "at the end of my day, i'm happy i got my education. it's just unfortunate i have to go so far into debt in order to make that extra money." (add $50,000 graphic over video) that college degree put justin 50 thousand dollars into debt. he's got the bills to show it. he took a job outside his field of study, and he lives at home...sacrifices to make ends meet. 14:19 (justin) "you want to think about other things like buying a house...going travelling somewhere...really you have to constantly be thinking about your student debt." there are thousands of students every year like justin... and they are racking up mortgage like debt...before they even land their first real jobs...before the get their real first mortgage. (adam carroll, broke, busted and disgusted author) 1:58 "when i would ask them how much is 60k in debt over 10 years...how much would the payment be...i got blank stares. and many of them had at least that

if not more.." adam carroll travelled the country for a decade...covering 500 college campuses. he's part of a team that just released this documentary called broke busted and disgusted... 15:46 (adam carroll) "we want to create a groundswell. if you don't believe this is an issue you need to wake up and smell the crazy glue." how big of an issue? (graphic over b-roll 1.3 trillion national / 12 billion iowa) according to the department of education...american students have 1.3 trillion dollars in debt. iowans make up nearly 12 billion of that. and unlike a car loan or a mortgage...students cannot refinance federal loans for a lower interest rate. that's something masachusettes senator elizabeth warren tried to change this spring. her bill didn't pass. it's also a hot issue on the campaign trail...vermont senator bernie sanders going as far as to propose completely free tuition. "so why has college tuition increased faster than inflation for decades? well that answer may be three fold. first..it simply costs more to supply things like internet and maintain buildings. and then there's what adam carroll calls administrator bloat

with schools hiring more and more adjunct staff. and finally...with more competition for government dollars... support for higher education just isn't what it used to be. " (roberta johnson, director isu office of student financial aid) 44:39 "more of the burden of funding post secondary education is lying with the students and parents because there isn't as much federal and state support to keep those costs low." roberta johnson heads up isu's office of student financial aid...she's also on a national board that oversees one of the federal loans available to students. right now, there are several types of federal loans and repayment plans... she says streamlining all of them to one or two options could be less confusing ...and untimately end in a more financially savvy decision. but for now, she says approach higher education like a business deal... 55:01 "so just think critically about their options making sure that its something that once you're committed to you can actually follow through with." and that's something adam carroll echoes... (text over video.. "millenials 50%of workforce by 2020) according to pwc... millenials are poised to make-up over 50% of the workforce within 5 years...he says the country cannot afford to have an
