iowa" elias: good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm elias johnson. elias: a campus stabbing tops your national headlines this morning. elias: the campus of university of california merced went on lockdownwn wednesday when a man stabbed five students. two of the victims were airlifted to a hospital ...the others treated on campus. the suspect was shot and killed. officials haven't released a motive, and it's not known what relationship, if any, existed between the attacker and the victims. elias: and shocking news over the death of an illinois police officer... investigators say the death of lieutenant joe gliniewicz has been ruled a suicide. abc's alex perez is in fox lake, illinois with the latest " from stand-up officer to lying thief? this morning new details about the death of lieutenant charles joseph gliniewicz?authorities saying he was not killed in the line of duty -- as initially believed - but that he instead took his own life sot - chief george filenko, commander, lake county major crime task force: gliniewicz's death was

"we've wanted to review more of the evidence. unfortunately despite multiple requests we have not received that evidence. we don't have the witness statements, we don't have the reports, and all of the other things that the police claim constitutes their basis. so our hand was forced to file this lawsuit now as opposed to waiting until we had a chance

the animal rescue league of iowa (arl) is iowa's largest nonprofit animal shelter, caring for many thousands of pets each year. the arl serves people and pets from across the state of iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more. history the arl has grown dramatically since its founding in 1926 - expanding its programs that serve both people and homeless animals across iowa. the most obvious growth is the number of animals the arl provides shelter and care for each year. intakes have increased from a few thousand animals a decade ago to more than 15,000 animals in 2013. through our proactive community outreach and spay/neuter programs, in the past few years

" nats these are steps countless couples have taken. but never a couple like this. four years after they met, fell in love, and moved-in together, koyuki higashi and hiroko matsuhara walked into the shibuya ward office. and 20 minutes later - walked out with japan's first ever certificate recognizing a same sex union. will: you just made history today, how does it feel? (koyuki higashi/ issued japan's 1st same-sex union certificate) i'm so happy," she says. "when they gave us the certificate, i cried. our friends cried." it has an official stamp, but businesses, hospitals and landlords aren't legally bound to acknowledge it. this kind of certificate -- only available for residents in two of tokyo's 23 wards. nowhere else in japan. elias: back in the metro now-- a group of women have found a common cause...preventin g relationship abuse... des moines police responded to 14 thousand domestic calls last year. but the people who work to prevent relationship abuse say they've noticed one thing that may help lower those numbers -- survivors speaking out. a group of women met on facebook and realized they all shared experiences with relationship abuse. now they're organizing a fundraiser to raise money to help victims get out of bad and start over. they say the them, was leaving. was in denial thinking i mabye it was my fault."
