a local t- shirt store is poking fun at the city of des moines and its new hotel project. the news starts in 30 seconds. "you're watching local 5 news at 10 in hd .we are iowa's most 5 news at 10 in hd .we are iowa's most accurate weather team and we start with your forecast first." brad/wx wall weather adlib: caulk up another nice, fall day out there today with sunny skies and mild temperatures! tonight will be quiet and clear with temps dropping into the low and mid 30s. tuesday will start off with sunshine, but probably
10:02 pm
won't end that way as a large, energetic system cranks up to our southwest. it will still be mild and dry tuesday though with highs in the upper 50s to near 60 for most locations. the rain from this large system will start rolling in wednesday am and could become stormy throughout the day. it looks like we will have a chance for some severe weather for especially the southern half of iowa and in the afternoon wed. we will be keeping a close eye on this powerful system to be sure! in its wake, we will have some very chilly winds thursday and friday as temps stay in the 40s for most areas. we will rebound this weekend with mid 50s saturday and then low 60s in the metro sunday! " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie/2shot a donation bucket for ... the rich? good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2shot and i'm jack miller. tonight ... a donation bucket at the popular raygun t-shirt store in des moines is critical of a downtown project. a new hotel will be connected to the iowa events center now that city council finalized the plans tonight. stephanie: but raygun's owner is making fun of the hoops the city of des moines had to go through to make it happen. stephanie: local 5's kattey ortiz is here with the latest. kattey? kattey: there are some complicated programs out there that help projects get the
10:03 pm
funding they need. one is called eb-5 -- it allows wealthy foreigners to get green cards if they invest half a million dollars in american development projects ... so long as they create jobs. that program could be suspended next month. but the city of des moines is relying on twenty million of those dollars to build that brand new hotel at the iowa events center. raygun owner mike draper says the great lengths the city is going through to even get that money shows the project isn't worth it. (we've had one consultant tell us if you're in the event center business, you're in the hotel business.) and now it's official. a brand new hotel at the iowa events center will open in two years ... in an effort to compete for big events with surrounding cities. raygun owner mike draper isn't buying into it. (if it's such a slam dunk proposal, why don't des moines investors put in their money if they're obviously going to get their money back from this successful hotel?) it's true. private entities aren't in the game .... and city officials admit it wasn't enough of a money maker for them. (the only way to get it financed was for the county and city to
10:04 pm
form the non profit to finance the hotel) when draper heard about the potential for the funding to fall through ... he set up this donation bucket. (well we thought since the hotel is a nonprofit ...we could put out a donation bucket, and i think there might be some sort of tax deductible ...i mean it's something the community wants obviously) okay ... he's obviously joking. the bucket mocks the project and the funding entirely -- calling the hotel an unneeded money pit. he says it's clear des moines will never be able to keep up. (the iowa events center was built in 2005. in 2010 it needed another 40 million dollars to rehab that so it could be bigger and attract more conventions. now it needs a hotel to attract more conventions, but no private company wants to develop the hotel.) it's there for a laugh ... but the bucket might make a contribution. (we're almost at three dollars. just almost twenty million more to go.) the city might not want it, however. (i've already talked to mister draper. he
10:05 pm
knows my stance) kattey: draper says he believes this entire process shows just how strange some of these programs in america can be to get federal dollars for a project. the hotel will be a hilton with three hundred and thirty rooms. city leaders hope it'll spur a lot more development downtown. kattey ortiz local five news we are iowa. stephanie: an update in the search for justice for jayda tonight. five year old jayda canada died last year after overdosing on morphine inside of her mothers apartment. her mothers then boyfriend, deshaun trombone, was sentenced to 65 years in prison for jayda's death.. and today, her mother accepted a guilty plea deal. "how do you plea to counts 1, 2, 3,4? guilty" stephanie: tionne bloodsaw plead guilty to one county of child endangerment causing serious injury, two

counts of neglect and one drug related charge. those charges all carry a 10 year sentence- with a maximum of 40 years behind bars. among friends and family in the courtroom was trombone's family. "i think they shouldve charged equally is my main point. as long as theyre both locked away thats fine with me " stephanie: bloodsaw's attorney added she may be eligible for parole after serving 18 months -- but its not likely that it will be granted. jack: a norwalk elementary student was rushed to the hospital this morning after he was hit by a car outside school. it happened at lakewood elementary school... just a few minutes before the crossing guard would have come on duty. the driver of the vehicle said his view was obstructed by the sunrise, and that the boy didn't look both ways before he crossed. parents feel the school needs to have a crossing guard out earlier. "we've had really good state, we have spots around the state that talked to a lot of producers including looking at my own farm, where we're harvesting a really good crop, if not the best crop, one of the had " jack: farmers are having a hard time storing grain some producers are having to crops next to for the time being. stephanie: wrestling on a football field? this weekend, kinnick stadium will play host to two sports on the same day--a first of it's kind event. it all starts with "grapple on the gridiron" as the hawk's wrestling team hosts oklahoma state saturday morning. then the football team takes the field at 7 against minnesota. . 12 schedule continues this weekend as 5th ranked oklahoma state comes to town. the cyclones hope to bring back some of the magic from 20-11's upset win." "there's certainly a lot of similarities with the date of the game, with their high ranking and playoffs on the line for their football team. you know we counted yesterday, there's only 8 current members of our roster that were part of that team in 2011." now as i mentioned, iowa state continues its brutal schedule, especially in the big 12. saturday's game will be the cyclones third of the season against a team ranked in the top 5 at the time. in fact when you look at the cyclones record closer...it kind of eases the pain of 3-6... of their 6 losses, those teams are a combined 45-8, with two teams unbeaten and 3 with just one loss! in fact statistician jeff sagarin says the cyclones have the toughest country...so i asked coach if he's ever had a tough! "just the six previous years is all. it's been brutal, it's been a rough stretch. top five teams, top 10 teams, top 15 teams, oh by the way, two of the non-league teams were undefeated, now one has one loss, the other is 8th or whatever they are in the country. our kids haven't shut down from that fact. you'd think maybe we'd come in here one of these mondays and they'd say 'another top
