drop off a bit tonight and tomorrow they are not going away just yet. skies will be clear tonight and into friday. jack: caught on camera-- this is the now confirmed tornado that touched down right near the des moines airport. why the people who spotted it tonight have their jobs in jeopardy. clip 1454 24:32 my wife saw it coming through the window and i said let's head for the basement." 24:35 stephanie: more storm stories too-- we talk to the iowans who rode out last night's wild weather. jack: and later-- why were "out of about an iowa pipeline project? " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nats - "a tornado forming right above our heads right now!" nats - "wow!" scanner nats - radio beeps nats - "tornado on the ground" nats - "wow look at that thing" jack: the national weather service has now confirmed five twisters touched down in iowa yesterday.

it tore up farms buildings and flipped vehicles on roads. jack thanks for joining us stephanie and i'm stephanie recapping those central iowa is our big story tonight. stephanie: the national finishing up their surveys for today and here's an ef-2 near plano-- that was the night's strongest storm. two ef-one mahaska county. and an ef-0 in guthrie county and at the des moines airport, stephanie: even with an ef zero, the wind was up to 75 miles per hour... here's what that looked like on the ground of the des moines airport... video shot from a traveler inside the terminal. this coming to us via twitter... the plane ladder carried away by gusts across the runway. stephanie: that airport storm also caught on camera here looking from the south near cumming -- you can see the funnel cloud forming. this tornado was spotted by the official team of meteorologists who are stationed at the des moines airport. stephanie: those weather observers who work inside the tower want you to know just how important

their job is ... because the f-a-a might get rid of them. local five's kattey ortiz is here with the story new at 10. kattey at any given moment ... there is someone in that tower recording all sorts of detailed weather data. for traffic control operators who communicating however the f- a-a may cut them to save money. after days like yesterday ... the weather observers are begging them to change their minds. "today we're reporting because the airplanes today ... they're other days its snow ... rain ... a severe storm. no matter the condition ... a weather observer always has an eye on the sky 24 hours a day ... every day of the year. "when you see a report that says the des moines airport, that's us sending out the report." it's a job that requires constant attention to detail to allow controllers to manage the runways. down the tower every five to ten minutes and type up the reports. and the weather changes so quickly we have to type up

these reports very quickly." but all 8 observers are on the chopping block. the f-a-a may soon deem them unneccessary to cut costs. after big weather events like yesterday's tornado ... they know they are needed. "severe weather may not have been reported if we were not there." the observers say inaccuracy during severe storms is too big of a risk to take if they're forced to leave. "the controllers will abandon the tower cab. an automated system is left to report the weather on its own. in a lot of cases it'll spit out bad data." "we see that as very problematic because the controllers are there to control the planes and they're already busy enough." they say the f-a-a has already tried this two years ago ... but backed out after 48 hours when they realized the data wasn't as thorough. we had a very bunch of precious things like my wedding dress in there like my wedding dress that i dont know where its at nats generator such a thing in my life shocking we we're really pleased that there were no serious injuries and i think the community has really come together and the emergency managment people and the local offcials here have done a good job we're all ok and thats really important jack: the governor says state aid will be available and the red cross is ready to help any iowa families who had storm damage. jack: the other big story tonight --finally a chance to be heard on the bakken oil pipeline project. the official hearing before the iowa utilities board was held in boone. stephanie: more than 200 people were allowed to speak before the board about this-- a proposed pipeline that would carry crude oil from north dakota to illinois, cutting diagnolly across

our state. stephanie: the room was packed with 500 people-- some there to speak, some just to listen. everyone on the list got two minutes before the board, with a giant digital clock keeping time. some had concerns: environmental, land ownership. most comments were very passionate, one guy was even musical. " the vast majority of landowners affected by this support the project and have given voluntary easements to use the land. corporate power. rick perry. koch brohters. terry branstad. big oil. they win. we lose. people and planet loses. there are those that argue that jobs will be created by the pipeline for other temproary and will provide work until the project is complete. i think it's important to take a wider view. a two year project will yield thousands of high paying high skill jobs. pipeline pipeline just say no. dirty oil has got to go. 12 tornadoes touched down across iowa- one of the largest and latest record. an e-f 3 made a diagonal path through the town of stratford- home to around 800 now 10 years later, those people are looking back. powell has their story. " wind, color of the sky, temp was different" weather horses get on saturday november 12th, 2005, an ef3 tornado barreled down on the town of stratford. "she knew something was wrong, i was standing in the driveway waiting when she got there" in the middle of it all- dorris andersen rushed to pick up her grandson steven as the tornado took aim. "should i stop? i didn't. had i stopped i wouldn't be here" "debris all over, it was hard to get through town" as it passed, firemens radios rattled. "got there and got paged to go to driden street, lucille runyan place" larry runyan - lucilles son- was on the department. with one look, he knew.

north, what used to be a house, nothing was there" lucille was gone. "lucille was mother of 9 kids, most right here sifting through what they can" (old footage) "i think we lost 23 homes so, it was tough" as nightturned io days, firefighters started organizing incoming volunteers in school notebooks. "just amazing the outpouring of help, schools came from webster city " notebooks they have to this day. "send up bus loads of kids, cleaning up, kids, kids" debris was found miles away and in some cases months later. week of resignations and alleged racism. the university today named middleton, a long-time law professor, as interim other schools are now joining for more inclusive campuses. protests at ithaca college in new york actually prompted the creation of a new chief diversity officer position. and yale university announced a 50 million dollar initiative to increase diversity there. students at more than 20 campuses were planning solidarity protests, including at drake university this afternoon. "we must love each other and support each other" jack: drake's "women of color" organization planned this. about 50 students gathered to show support for the protest movement in missouri. stephanie: to the race for 20-16 -- stephanie: and some headlines involving donald trump and ben carson and their words about these campus protests. donald trump using some harsh words.
