has just over one half inch so far. more showers will be possible into this evening especially over eastern iowa. we will stay mild tonight with temps in the 50s overnight, but cooler air will start settling in wednesday with steady or falling temps during the day. there will be a chance for some drizzle or light showers wednesday, but then clearing skies for thursday. however, we are going to have some very strong winds thursday from the west at 20-30+ mph which will make those 40s seem more like 20s and 30s! we are watching friday closely as a quick moving weather system will come into the colder environment and try to get some snow going over iowa friday afternoon/evening. right now, it looks like we could see a band of 1-3" possible for mainly the grassy areas because ground temperatures are still in the mid to upper 40s. however, it could be enough to cause some problems on roadways for the evening rush hour. after this, we are going to have a pretty chilly weekend with highs only in the 30s. all state agencies in iowa are ordered to halt work on resettling syrian refugees. but tonight, one iowa group says it has no plans to stop offering aid to refugees coming to iowa. jack: the director of the iowa international center says the united nations and federal government are in control of allowing refugees into the country. and if syrian refugees make their way to iowa-- they'll still be happy to help them. we want to be clear - the international center is not a state agency. judy 2:42 it's not only welcoming refugees and doing the right thing, it's welcoming wonderful members of iowa's community. jack: the center provides language classes and help with housing and transportation through private funding. jack: iowa has a rich history of helping refugees. in the 70's and 80's, governor robert ray helped 8,000 flee from southeast asia during the vietnam war. since then,

though, refugee resources have decreased in iowa. tonight, local 5's kattey ortiz sits down with an iowan who spent 19 years of her life in a refugee camp in thailand. she shares her story and why helping those in need is still important -- in tonight's big story. "this is our first christmas picture" images full of love and smiling family members hang throughout mone aye's house. but something as simple as a photograph -- a tangible memory -- used to be a luxury for her. this picture was the only one she ever had growing up. she was born in a refugee camp in thailand ... and would spend summers worrying if she would be bombed. she saw that worry come true when she was just five years old. "my aunt just pulled me by the hand and we just ran. we had to run up on the mountain, hiding by the cliff. looking down the hill we can see our house was burning." at the age of ninteen ... mone and her family came to iowa. but it wasn't a quick getaway. it took more than a year of interviews ...

paperwork ... background and medical checks through the united nations to travel as a legal refugee. "i'm blessed. i'm lucky enough to come here. now i have a house i can call my home, i have my own car and i have my career, my job that i can work." with nationwide the backlash against syrian refugees coming to america ... mone relates to the violence the millions are trying to flee. "i feel the same way for syria where they're trying to look for a safe place, a better place for their future, for their kids, for the women, for everybody. just because of one fear that somebody created for them, now everyone's turning them down." she says the tactics of isis don't reflect what most refugees long for ... and refugees shouldn't be turned away as a whole. "i just feel like it's not right. anyone can do a bad thing, anyone can go to a church and blow something up." one year in the united states can change
10:05 pm
work and dedication to a better future led mone to the best achievement of all -- citizenship. "i finally have a home now. before i felt like a ghost, like nobody knows me, nobody recognized me as their citizen." iowa has given mone endless opportunities she didn't have before -- opportunities she can give to her four year old daughter, gabby, who will be able to take as many pictures as she wants. jack: mone also works in community outreach for the des moines public schools ... serving as a connection between parents and teachers and an interpreter at times. she's also a board member of "embarc" ... which is an orginization founded by refugees helping others through their new journey in america. jack: the refugee controversy started after investigators

lights display that's in the process of being set up in dayton. it happened sometime saturday night after volunteers had finished setting up for the day. police are looking for who's responsible. but it's what the community is doing now that's got people talking. local 5's nikki davidson is here to explain.. . nikki? nikki: this is a small display we are talking about... its put on entirely by a group of volunteers. they're devestated by the vandalism... but say they couldn't have expected what happened next... (we just got these up friday) finding someone that like holiday lights more than beverly jondle... wouldn't be easy... last year dayton didn't have a festival of lights... so she decided to do something about it. 11:16:44 i just didn't want to see it die, i wanna keep it going... and went way above and beyond what most would.. the last five weekends shes been out here all day and night... to make sure the community would have it's festival of lights. (i just wanted it to happen...so) she left saturday night...and came back to find this... 11:18:10 it was completely demolished... wooden figurines smashed...

(these were over 30 years old) lighted reindeer beheaded... (its really sad this happene) and the 80 candy canes she carefully placed around oaks park... busted...and scattered everywhere. (actually heres a candy cane here) she says the worst part is most of this stuff was donated... and has sentimental value 11:22:03 i have no idea why people would want to bust things up like they did. but this isn't going to be where this story ends... since word spread about the vandalism... jondle says shes' gotten eighty phone calls from people wanting to help 11:20:27 its totally great, it warms my heart up. they're donating new decorations... their time...and money... all to make sure come the day after thanksgiving... this place will be looking even better than before. 11:22:17 its still going on, no matter what it will still happen. nikki the community is

their seatbelts. the other four are recovering and are in stable condition. jack: one less republican in the race for the white house. in your local election headquarters, bobby jinal ends his campaign. jack: jindal's campaign was running low on cash, and he couldn't get the poll numbers to move much. he never made it to the main stage in any of the republican debates, always appearing in the undercard debate with the other candidates who averaged lower poll numbers. he made many visits to iowa, his family was fond of the iowa state fair. but in the end he says he just couldn't rally enough support to justify keeping his campaing going. gov. bobby jindal/(r) louisiana) look i'm honored to have the opportunity to run for president of the united states. my parents came here 45 years ago in search of freedom and opportunity never in a million years did they think i'd be governor much less run for president this wasn't our time jack: so who's left? there are 14 republicans still vying for your vote. donald trump is

jack: welcome back, after forty years, waukee's getting a make- over. well, at least their logo is. take a look. the logo on the left was the winning design in a city sponsored contest back in 19-73. this time, the city hired flynn wright advertising agency to help them rebrand. the concept is to showcase the letter "w" against the intersecting lines to

"the key to good living" will still be the city's motto. jack: what do you think of the new logo? let us know -- we may use your comments on-air. you can post you thoughts on facebook and twitter. or send us an email or give us a call . we'd love to hear what you think! the contact information is on your screen. jack: who knew? des moines is the place to go to get rich? "money under 30 dot com" just put out the list... with des moines number four on the best cities in which to get rich. the website lists des moines' low unemployment rate, low commute times and calls it a place with a "thoughtful balance between big-city bustle and small-town gentleness." cedar rapids also made the list as number 5 because of very low unemployement rates among millennials. jack: there's a big event coming up where you can

are iowa sports" jon: it's a new week-- but not much new in the top 5 of the college football playoff rankings. iowa really controls their own destiny here... let's check out the top 10. this is good for the hawkeyes-- who stay at number 5. the top 4 don't change... iowa has a pair of big 12 teams nipping at their heals-- in oklahoma state and oklahoma. to me it doesn't matter what anyone says if the hawkeyes keep winning. these rankings don't mean much at this point in the season because so much can change in the next three weeks. as long as iowa keeps winning they'll stay in that top group of 6. jon: now we look at the next matchup for iowa. it's purdue.
10:21 pm
a win puts them in the big ten championship-- if they win out and win the big ten title game-- they're more than likely in the national playoff. alex giaimo has more from iowa city as the hawkeyes look for their first trip to indianapolis "iowa closes out their home schedule against purdue this weekend. with a win they can clinch the big ten west but they aren't thinking in terms of the bigger picture just yet. (giaimo) it took around 40 minutes for somebody to ask kirk ferentz about his team's next opponent at his weekly press conference. (kirk ferentz) yout know we aren't taking anything for granted i can assure you that i know the conversation today hasn't been on purdue, our conversations have been strictly on purdue, we got a lot of respect for them and respect for thier coaching staff. (tevaun smith) we can't walk into this game thinking it's going to be easy just because of their record i mean (giaimo) and even with all their success this year, the hawkeyes aren't looking past a boilermaker team that has just two wins this season. (leshun daniels) they're dangerous, i mean you look at the

games, they don't really get blown out like you might think that they do. i mean they're a tough group of guys. they go out there each week and compete hard so we got to make sure we're ready and we don't go out there sleeping on purdue. (jordan canzeri) we know they are going to give it all that they have. they are going to show us things we haven't seen before on their film and they're going to bring the blitz and everything so it's something we just got to be ready for. (alex giaimo) the hawkeyes have a chance to make it a perfect 7 and 0 at kinnick stadium this season. in iowa city, with your hawkeye headquarters report, alex giaimo " iowa and purdue kick off at 11 am on espn 2. also we are monitoring an alleged rape that happened at nebraska quarterback tommy armstrong junior's house this past weekend. the police are investigating-- armstrong also lives with two teammates-- reports don't specify who the suspect is. no arrests have been made according to espn. jon: thursday night's 3a football championship game features two teams from

pella is the likely favorite in this one but norwalk is okay with that. they're ready to show they can compete with number one team in class 3a. the norwalk warriors don't need to be reminded that they were shut out by the dutch back on september 18th in their only loss of the 2015 campaign. it's a motivating factor for norwalk who has only given up 18 points in their three post season games. norwalk has leaned heavily on junior quarterback brady brandsfield who threw for 147 yards and ran for 192 against sb-l. now with an upset on their mind-- the warriors will look to end pella's win streak at 27 thursday night. to do so-- they'll need to containthe human highlight reel-- that is noah clayburg. "shutting down is a bad term. we're going to try and contain him as best we can and we've got to limit his big plays that's number one. clayburg does an absolutely fantastic job of making something out of nothing. "well we just gotta play our game and focus and keep our quandrants and be in the right position do what we can to shut them down." the warriors are in uncharted territory. this team has
10:24 pm
never played for a state title. they were 6-5 last year-- but this year a lot has changed-- and when it comes down to it-- norwalk is just having more fun. " it's been a great ride i've enjoyed every minute of it. we're looking to capitalize this thursday. it's been a fun ride. we believed from the start of the season we could do it. so being here is something that is really good to go out and actually do it playoff run has been really fast a lot of games in a few days but it's been really fun enjoying it with the guys" norwalk and pella kick off just after 7pm on thursday night in cedar falls. jon/3shot (wrap sports) jack: we'll be right back... you're watching local five news at 10.
