the trend today but i don't think we're going to have much success. mostly cloudy, cold, and wet skies are the primary weather conditions expected through the afternoon today. rainfall today will be very scattered and light, so if we do see any showers they will leave very little rain accumulation and they should primarily slide through the state during the afternoon. temperatures today are going to be steady and cold with our official high temp already occurring at midnight and an afternoon high of around 52 degrees. it's possible early this evening as temperatures fall quickly we could see a brief rain/snow mix to even a few flakes fall in western iowa, but nothing will accumulate and it would not be long lasting. thursday is going to be sunny, but very windy and cold with highs in the mid 40s and wind gusts up to 45 mph. friday there is still a very good chance for snow in the afternoon to early evening. right now it looks like it will start as a wintry mix and turn into snow fairly quickly into the afternoon. snow accumulations should be on the lighter side with ground temperatures being as low as they are, but i still think in grassy areas we will see a general collection between 1 and 3 inches with a few isolated areas able to get 4 inches. the weekend looks pretty dry for everyone but cold weather slides into place with highs in the 30s saturday and sunday. elias: also coming up on local five news midday.... following governor branstad's call to not accept any syrian refugees -- we'll take a look at at the role of refugee centers here in iowa, and the story of one woman who fled thailand seeking a better home here in the hawkeye state-- elias: a major hit to a holiday light

"this is our first christmas picture" images full of love and smiling family members hang throughout mone aye's house. but something as simple as a photograph -- a tangible memory -- used to be a luxury for her. this picture was the only one she ever had growing up. she was born in a refugee camp in thailand ... and would spend summers worrying if she would be bombed. she saw that worry come true when she was just five years old. "i'm blessed. i'm lucky enough to come here. now i have a house i can call my home, i have my own car and i have my career, my job that i can work." with nationwide the backlash against syrian refugees coming to america ... mone relates to the violence the millions are trying to flee. "i feel the same way for syria where they're trying to look for a safe place, a better place for their future, for their kids, for the women, for everybody. just because of one fear that somebody created for them, now everyone's turning them down." she says the tactics of isis don't reflect what most refugees long for ... and refugees shouldn't be turned away as a whole. retirees is that if they have already enacted this strategy, or if they file and suspend in the next six months, they won't be affected. q: how many people use this strategy? the social security administration doesn't have numbers on how many people use the "file and suspend strategy, but a recent study estimates that about a quarter of couples are eligible. if they all took it, it would cost the program about $500 million (according to the center for retirement research at boston college.) the social security administration estimates it won't save any money for the first ten years, but there will be some savings after 2025. q: will this help keep social security running? the last social security trustee report warned that social security would run out of money by 2033 and only be able to meet about 77% of its obligations after that point. while still more will be needed to fix the social security system, this move will help the future of the program. q: there's some good news in the budget
