of central and northern iowa. the timing on snow looks to start in the late morning in western iowa, and it should really get going through central iowa in the late afternoon through the evening. snow totals have been steadily increasing with the metro now expected to get between 3 and 5 inches of snow and the highway 20 to 30 corridor to get around 4 to 7 inches. the winds will be picking up through the afternoon and especially overnight so blowing snow will make travel conditions deteriorate especially as the afternoon and evening continue. here in central and southern iowa we will see the snow start as a wintry mix, but it should turn into all snow fairly quickly, and while the warm ground temps will be melting the snow at first, it will likely start to accumulate on the roads during the rush hour driving home friday night. we should dry out on saturday and sunday but it will be very cold with highs falling into the 20s and 30s. elias: as we first told you yesterday, the city of waukee is making some big changes. the first, and most noticeable is the city's logo. crews have started

many thousands of pets each year. the arl serves people and pets from across the state of iowa through its programs, which include pet adoption, humane education, pet behavior training, spay/neuter, animal cruelty intervention and much more. history the arl has grown dramatically since its founding in 1926 - expanding its programs that serve both people and homeless animals across iowa. the most obvious growth is the number of animals the arl provides shelter and care for each year. intakes have increased from a few thousand animals a decade ago to more than 15,000 animals in 2013. through our proactive community outreach and spay/neuter programs, in the past few years we have begun to see a decrease in the number of animals we care for, but our work is far from over. other areas of growth include the arl's programs designed specifically to address the reasons animals end up in shelters, including spay/neuter, behavior training, and humane education programs. the arl's positive reinforcement training program has expanded to offer year-round classes, as well as free behavior advice for dogs, cats, rabbits and other pets. the shelter continues to spay and neuter all dogs, cats, rabbits, ferrets and pigs that

" you're watching local 5 news midday in hd. we are iowa" : elias: thanksgiving is the time of year when people start looking forward to christmas and all the presents under the tree, but one little boy in alaska is taking holiday giving to the next level. " patrick, the oldest of destinee mcclung's two young sons, proudly claims none of these gifts as his own; they're presents for the community's homeless population to have. "it's for all the people, and they don't have homes," the 3-year-old explained. "and they're very cold." a few weeks ago, patrick overheard his mom in conversation with someone else. the community's homeless population was mentioned - and patrick, naturally, had

you say there are people who don't have houses?'" mcclung recalled. "and i said, 'yeah, you know, sometimes people just don't have homes.'" mcclung says when patrick heard that some of the homeless population spend their nights outside in the cold, he began to cry. a video mcclung posted on her facebook page shows patrick in tears. "i don't want them to sleep on a piece of cardboard," the anchorage toddler says through sobs. mcclung says she's never seen her son react that way to anything. "he's 3, and everyone he knows has a house and has food and has toys," mcclung said. "and so it really genuinely hurt his heart to kind of realize that there are without." quickly dried up when patrick learned there was a way he could help the homeless. he and his mom made signs - calling for socks, cold-weather gear, diapers, toiletries and other items - and set up boxes around town so others could donate to patrick's passion project.

"i think a lot of us aren't looking to help. we just live our lives, we're just used to homeless people and all of the issues that are around us - it's just normal." but, she says, you don't have to be 3 years old to take action. she urges everyone to take a note from patrick - just start with what moves your heart. elias: and up next-- we'll have two very special guests from des moines drag king on with us-- elias:

onto sports news now-- the words pella and losing aren't two that generally go together in football.. that's why it's hard to believe last year was the first time the dutch ever won a state title. it took 26 trips to the playoffs for before it happened. and their 27th post season appearance could land them with back to back championships. " since 2013's loss to washington in the quarterfinals of the 3a playoffs-- pella has been unbeatable. they've won 27 straight games-- a streak that speaks for itself. "i've never really thought about 27 straight victories until people start talking about it. i've been trying to ignore it to be quite honest." there's one game left for the 27 seniors on pella's roster-- they're already the most decorated in school history-- but if

"i'm bummed about it but i can't let that get me down right now my excitement is overwhelming being bummed out right now and i wouldn't have done it with any other group of guys. tomorrow night's game comes with a little pressure-- so pella has to stay focused on the task at hand.
