starting to develop by wednesday afternoon or evening, but highs will be just rain is looking pretty darn that is better than a right? look for 40s with a good amount night, there will be slight chance for a wintry mix developing as the winds get colder from the north. friday and saturday are looking dry with colder temperatures throughout the midwest, but we could have a slight chance for snow for sunday and monday as a weak system comes into the cold air. overall, next week is looking pretty tame though. " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie/2ram travel with care...that's the governments advice just before one of the busiest times to travel. good evening. i'm stephanie angleson. jack/2ram and i'm jack miller. tonight-- the u-s state department is sending out a worldwide travel alert for americans, worried about more terrorist activity around the globe. jack: the alert doesn't suggest americans avoid all travel, but it does urge u.s. citizens to , quote, "exercise vigilance when in public places or using transportation." the alert doesn't end until february 24th. stephanie: a car wrapped around a power pole...not something you'd expect to see in a des moines neighborhood. that crash this morning killed one person and left another in the hospital it happened near the intersection of 35th street and ingersoll in des moines this morning.. here's that mangled car.... the crash caused a few

transformers to blow, cathcing the trees overhead on fire. the driver-- troy mure junior -- is in the hospital. the passenger, scalicity boyd, died at the scene. tonight local 5 sat down with boyd's aunt who's understandably in shock over what happened to her neice. stephanie: nikki davidson has more in tonight's big story. this is the way friends and family will remember scalicity boyd... young... and full of life. 13:21:44 she always had that glow, that smile. always happy and energetic. (nat siren) but this morning... that glow faded when the car she was riding in smashed into this utlity pole on 35th street (nat fire).... scalicity was ejected from the vehicle...and died on scene. 13:26:48 i get a phone call at work telling me my niece is dead. her loved ones are still in shock... 13:22:47 its just sad to see one of your flesh just flash away from you that suddenly. its horrible. now their attention is focused on the little ones left behind... boyd had four young children... 13:23:40 her children was her everything, she loved them babies, her heart -- its just sad we dont know what, its hard to explain to our nieces and nephews mommys not going to be here anymore. and as the shock fades... theres big

"it aws so close were not used to that, this neighborhood, you just wouldnt expect it. it was really scary for all of us yes" jack:

fraanken is expected to survive. when he gets out of the say he will likely degree murder charges. stephanie: how many of you feel fatigued right now? maybe you have to work to catch after walking up stairs. those sound like symptoms, but they may also be the beginning of a deadly disease. it's the reality a young urbandale mother is living with. but with the help of her husband and friends, she's sharing her story...hoping it turns into something much bigger. it's the classic love story. boy meets girl. they fall in love. there's a wedding. and soon after that ...a couple of kids. 1:12 "busy. it's fun....it's lots of fun. but busy." for randy and meredith wilharber...life was good. with two kids under three...it can be hard for a young mom to stop and catch her breath. but after the birth of their second son, meredith noticed some of her nagging pregnancy symptoms...like fatigue...just weren't going away. 2:11 "and they got worse regardless of how much, how often i was

nothing was getting better. and i knew something was not right." meredith starting becoming dizzy doing everyday things... she noticed some chest pains... until one day after getting up with the boys in the middle of the night...she could no longer ignore what her body was trying to tell her. 3:57 "when i came upstairs and went to get into bed, my heart started palpitating really bad. it...i could feel it down my arm and into my neck. and i knew it wasn't right. i went to the er." it wasn't a heart attack. that may have been more comforting for meredith. unfortunately she'd soon find out she was in the early stages of pulmonary arterial hypertension. it's a disease meredith unfortunately knew all too well. 5:50 "it was very frightening. i watched my mom suffer and pass away from this. so i know what it can do and does to people." 23 years ago, meredith lost her mom to pah. even though the wilharbers knew it was a possibility... the

shattering. 6:07 "well...you want to fix it. right? and i can't and that's hard." but as families do, they took this diagnosis on together. digging in .to learn as much as they could about pah. (graphic) pulmonary arterial hypertension.causes the arteries in the lungs to thicken, making it hard for blood to pass through. that makes the right side of the heart to work harder to pump blood. the body is literally suffocating itself. it's a chronic, progressive disease. so once the damage is done, it cannot be reversed. there is no cure. 8:49 "left untreated this disease will kill you in 2.8 years. that's the number. so it's harrowing." meredith is lucky. she caught it early. most people are more advanced by the time they get diagnosis. which can make it harder to treat. meredith takes daily

medical pump all day, every day ... just to survive. it's another way pah will rob her of a normal life. 10:51 "not good..it gives up a lot of freedom. no can't...i'll never swim things like showering because it can't get wet." it would be easy for but they chose a different route... with the help of some friends. "24:58 "my first reaction was how can i help. what can i do to help." chris bagby and randy are college buddies. together they formed the blue lips foundation. they of course want a cure. but the first hurdle, developing a better way for doctors to diagnose pah. 26:35 "my first hope is we are able to get to better diagnosis faster . it takes on average over 2 years to be diagnosed." 16:10

"if you have this disease every single day matters. every day you're not on these drugs or on these therapies is a day you're closer to death. that really needs to change." for meredith....the foundation is a chance to take a break from the grim realities of pah...focusing on helping others. as she battles this disease... not knowing what tomorrow will bring ...she's focused on what really matters... 11:48 "that the medication continues to work and something bigger and stronger will come out in the next few years. hopefully there will be different avenues and that someday there is a cure for people." stephanie/3mon: the blue lips foundation has lots of activities planned in the

"jon tonight dowling had a chance to make history. seven teams have tried and failed to win three straight titles in 4a. a win over cedar rapids kennedy, and the maroons will capture that elusive three peat. dowling decked out in their all-whites! and they waste no time. first possession, the handoff to jacob zachary. #23 looking like zeke elliot versus oregon last year. into the endzone, 7-0 maroons. ensuing kennedy possession, check out ryan mells the big fellow literally steals the ball from the running back and takes it to the house. 2 pt would fail, dowling up 13-0. 2nd quarter, kennedy makes it 13-7. on 4th and 5, maroons lined up for the fg, but they shuffle up the formation and kurt walding off his back foot finds stevie sarcone into the endzone! 20-7 maroons! they'd make it 27-7 at halftime and it's a three-peat. dowling for the first time in history goes back to back to back. 41-10 the final. "i mean this is the only way to go out in my book, because if you're going out before this, you're going out sad and so we just didn't want to do that, we just wanted to play hard and beat these guys out and that's what we did." tag " jon: the hardest part of paul rhoads being fired is know he's a good person-- and the pride he took in this isu sometimes that's just not enough. explain paul rhoads-- it should be passionate.
