cameron mccarty planning. elder care. topics you plan to discuss when you're passing the turkey and gravy. but if your around for a few days over the thanksgiving holiday, you might want to consider making a date to talk about these important topics. financial professional cameron mccarty, owner of vivid tax advisory services is here to give us ideas on how to start the conversation and what should be covered. q. talking finances. why the thanksgiving holiday? i agree thanksgiving seems like a strange time to have this conversation - but for many families, this is the only time that everyone is under the same roof for an extended period of time. so take a break after the thanksgiving meal or after black friday shopping to discuss this important topic. i understand it can be a difficult people put this off. haven't had detailed their adult children (according to a study by fidelity). but nearly all those who've had these tough talks say they have greater peace of mind! q: how do you suggest parents start the

conversation with their adult children? many of my clients are in or near retirement, and i encourage them to start the conversation. start by telling your kids that you want to make sure they have all the information they need before you can no longer take care of your finances. let them know this is because you care about them, and you want to avoid extra headaches and stresses for them. without a financial discussion, it could be like a jigsaw puzzle for them trying to put all the pieces of your finances together. many adult children don't bring this up because they don't think it's any of their business. i say to them- you couldn't be more wrong- take the initiative and start the conversation. q: what should be covered in the conversation? here are some of the essentials. it may take more than one meeting. but, i know you'll feel good about just getting started. i have a complete list on my website, vividtaxadvisory.com, for you to print out to help with the conversation. legal: share about your estate plans. who is your attorney? what legal documents do you have in your possession? is there a will or trust? parents can ask for their children's input. one child may want to inherit the family vacation home rather than money - but those

wishes won't be clear until you have the conversation. in addition, parents might want to name an adult child as power of attorney to make financial and healthcare decisions for them later in life. healthcare: share the medical insurance you have besides medicare. what is covered? do you have long term care insurance? do you have assets set aside to pay for care at home should you need it one day? what amount is available? talk to your children about how you want to grant them permission to speak with your doctors. income and expenses: tell them what income you have - social security or pensions. talk about your debts and expenses. again, you don't have to share dollar figures - just ideas and then share where your records are kept for your investments and the name of your financial professional. tell your kids that if necessary they have the permission to contact your financial professional. keep in mind that any financial professional will be required to get permission in writing from you before they can share detailed information without a legal document granting authority. financial records: parents, tell your adult children where you keep your tax returns and who prepares them. share where you have your bank accounts and
