and i'm jack tonight-- a car wedged martin luther king junior overpass. traffic on i-235 was at a near stop for more than half a mile. jack: jacob peklo was at the scene and with more. jacob. jacob: driving down the interstate your eyes on the you, you might crash. signs warned drivers that traffic was shut down more than a mile away from the actual site. and it's still that a car could go where this one did. jacob: around 5-45 tonight, neighbors tell me they heard a loud bang, near the martin luther king overpass. fire crews rushed to the scene. officials say they had to cut open the car to rescue the three passengers. they were all taken to the hospital, with non life- threatening injuries, a surprise for those who witnessed the crash. jason lillethun, des moines: " all i saw was two cars sitting on the side of the ramp, didn't notice the one on the side of the ramp at the time, but it didn't sound like a car
10:03 pm
jacob: none of the names of the people in the car are being released at this time. the cause of the crash is under investigation by the des moines police department. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. stephanie: we could have some treacherous driving in iowa tomorrow. some freezing rain is on its way. brad what should we expect statewide. brad: brad: well, our holiday weekend is starting of mild and dry early this evening, but that will be changing pretty quickly. temperatures will be in the 50s most of this evening for central iowa, as rain showers begin to increase over iowa. a cold front will be pushing in from the west and causing temps to drop into early thursday morning for western iowa. and this is where the problems begin! freezing rain, sleet and even snow will be possible for western iowa thursday, but the metro will be seeing all rain throughout the day. the further west and north, the colder and more icy roads will likely be on

metro could see a wintry mix thursday evening, but no accumulation of ice or snow is expected here. temps will continue to slowly fall thursday night into friday morning as the north winds pick up at 15-25 mph. friday will be dry for shoppers, but pretty cold with stephanie: thanks brad. jack: charges are jack: charges are now filed tonight after a deadly crash that killed two men earlier this month. deanna gliem faces four counts of vehicular homicide. . on november 15th police say gliem was heading south on hubbell avenue when she hit the victims' car at the intersection of east 37th. richard hummel and randall sonnenburg were both killed. tonight neighbors say that entire section of road is a nightmare. local five's kattey ortiz shows us why. "they'll be coming from both entrances on euclid and hubble trying to get on here." "then you've got all the people coming in and out of quick trip."

sound confusing? it's because it is. kim steenhook knows the intricate traffic flow of 37th and hubble like the back of her hand. "it's a 3 way stop down there, so you have two lanes this way and two lanes this way, and it just alters. it's just 2 cars all the time." she owns a consignment shop right across the street from this quicktrip ... where two men died in a violent crash earlier this month. as cars turn in and out of the many side streets, stop signs and traffic lights ... she says it's an inevitable recipe for disaster. "it's an alarm clock that goes off with either a squealing tire or a honking horn." even at a vigil last weekend for the victims, a frustrated relative pointed out the dangers. "speed, no stoplights, there's no crosswalk, it's just a free for all drag race zone." kim's never seen a collision like the fatal one ... but it certainly wasn't the first crash. "i come sometimes in the morning and there's broken headlights or whatever colored glass along here that i

pick up and clean up." with so many moving parts ... kim says she can't offer a solution. but she hopes one comes fast before tragedy strikes again. in des moines kattey ortiz local five news we are iowa. jack: we want to hear from you. have you ever had a problem at this intersection? let us know. you can post you thoughts on twitter and facebook. or send us an email or give us a call . the contact information is on your screen. stephanie: iowa is in the middle of revamping its medicaid system. but many say the governor's deadline of january first is way too agressive. the 560-thousand iowans on medicaid just received these packets in the mail asking them to choose a new managed care provider. there are four out-of-state companies to choose from. the problem is, people don't know if their current doctors and hospitals have contracts with any of these companies. greg 6:41 when we've contacted larger health care systems in the state, des moines metro hospitals,

contracts with any of the mco's. stephanie: the iowa department of human services says more providers are signing contracts everyday, but hasn't released an exact number. jack: when you think of the most famous iowans in history one name that usually makes the list is wrestling icon dan gable. the three time national champion wrestler at iowa state and.... olympic gold medalist went on to coach the iowa hawkeyes. from '78 to '97 gable led iowa to 15 national titles, nine of those consecutively--- a feat that has never been matched and likely never will. elias johnson sat down with gable to talk about his success on the mat and what reitred life is like. elias: do you think it was more difficult for you to do what you did as a coach, or dan gable the individual? dan gable: oh, as a coach because you don't have as much control on the outcome when you're actually the person in that circle on the mat. elias: what was so successful for you
10:08 pm
for so long? dan gable: for being a coach? elias: yeah dan gable: i was in those kids heads and they believed in me and what we were telling them and they just had a style that wore on our opponents, elias: the iowa style dan gable: yeah and that's what i think coach brands and others want, they want their kids to perform at the highest level and maybe break the guy a little. elias: well, you made the quote, once you wrestle everything else in life is easy, i remember that from my childhood. dan gable: well that saying, once you've wrestled everything else in life is easy - its true but then again its not that simple, there's a lot behind it and its still difficult." elias: i know you retired officially from the university of iowa and they threw you a nice

party, dan gable: even though i'm retired i still coach, mostly to the coaches. the calendar and i pick and stay busy, i love the to influence the state of iowa, just like you - you wrestled and i think those are the kind of people who step up for our have been through strong activities, and we need that. we don't need people born without rhyme or reason and they don't have any kind of leadership. jack: dan gable says the future of

while handcuffed and in the care of a missouri water patrolman. tonight... a whistleblower inside the missouri state patrols tells local 5 that cover-ups, lies and corruption are protecting the person who's to blame for brandon's death. jack: local 5's nikki davidson traveled to the lake for the ozarks for this special report. (nat barking) just a few miles from the lake of the ozarks in missouri (come here) this is how randy henry is spending the retirement... with his also retired partner... a former k-9 officer. (good boy) but his dog... is just about the only thing he's kept from his 30 years with the state patrol... most everything else hes gotten rid of. 23:30:25 i had my retirement letter typed up, i couldn't wait to hit send. one of the happiest days of my life. he says he doesn't even like being referred to as "sergeant" anymore... its a reminder of what he says is a mistake that will stay with him forever. 23:29:36 that is something you'll never forget. i was part of this organization. we all have to take responsibility, its
10:18 pm
rest of our lives. the mistake... he says was when missouri highway patrol merged its road and water operations...and he was in charge of signing off on the training of a trooper named anthony piercy... 2:50:27 they enouraged him to the the first 20/20/20 officer, 20 dui on road, 20 bwi and 20 drug arrests. they actively encouraged him to be top dog, and i think that had a little to do with all of this. rush rush so we can get to the next one. he says piercy wasn't experienced enough on the water to be making arrests... so when he took 20 year old brandon ellingson into custody for boating while intoxicated may 2014... it was a perfect storm. 22:52:12 he called me several hours after he killed brandon ellingson, said he went from the highest of highs to lowest lows. piercy handcuffed ellingson... and later
10:19 pm
of lifejacket on him 22:33;54 he said he had a brainfart... just picked the first one, he was in a rush to get out... ...and took off on speeds topping 40 mph... when ellingson fell out into the water... the lifejacket fell off.... henry says thats when piercy continued to fail horribly to do the right thing. 23:03:39 it was a very simple rescue, if he had maintained his wits, jumped in and told people he could have held onto him for over an hour, you don't let a kid out there while you're in the boat... he didn't even call for backup. piercy did eventually jump into recover ellingson, but said he wasn't able to keep ahold of him... and says he struggled to stay afloat and worried for his own safety... it's a story randy henry says changed over time... 23:02:17 i told him he was lying, i was gonna support you through this. you're lying to me. we are done. i'm not gonna support you. you killed this kid, now you're lying about it. you are not very remorseful if you're lying about it. nikki: what did he say? nothing. he walked out. i haven't spoken to him since. lies and mistakes.... that randy henry says was paid for with brandon ellingsons
10:20 pm
have done anything differently? no. brandon ellingson was cooperative, you can see that in the photo (show photo) 23:23:26 missiouri highway patrol killed brandon, tony being responsible, but i share in that responsibility. when it came time for the state coroner to investigate if piercy should face criminal charges, henry says highway patrol purposely withheld evidence and witnesses to change the outcome of the investigation.... 23:07:23 if the jury had seen all the evidence, i could have accepted this but the evidence was witheld. the system is broke and no one was held accountable for that. today piercy is still on the job... a fact henry struggles with. 23:05:41 i believe there are elements there for involuntary manslaughter. nikki: should he be in jail? not saying he needs to be in jail... but charged with a felony and let the courts decide. henry himself was demoted and transferred to another area after he
10:21 pm
claims officals encouraged him to lie about the strength of their training program on the record. he says now hes done with the organization... and isn't looking back... but believes changes need to be made... or this could happen again and again. 23:25:27 until missiouri highway patrol gets out of the practice of investigating themselves. this isn't going to work. jack: we tried contacting the missouri state patrol but they won't respond to our request for any comment. a new special prosecutor will be investigating, and the ellingson family has filed a civil case. stephanie/2ram:

stay with local 5 as we follow what happens in both cases. stephanie: sports director jon schaeffer with us now, and jon black friday is all about the heroes game jon: yeah jack it's really become a rivalry coming up on local 5 sports we'll hear from the hawkeyes and how they're not looking at it as anymore than week 12's game. " now, local 5 sports

jon: back in 2011 when the big ten established two divisions-- their hopes were that nebraska and iowa would build into rivals... well it happened-- and it didn't take long either. but the hawkeyes are trying to just look at this one as another game out of their 12. alex giaimo tells us more from iowa city. "(alex giaimo) while the media is certainly making the rivalry between iowa and nebraska a big deal the iowa hawkeye players insist that it's just another game on their schedule and potential road block to finishing out their perfect regular season. (cj beathard) you know people keep asking that question if i think it's a rivalry or not and what it means. all i know is it's our next game and it gives us an opportunity to go 12-0 and that's what we wanna do that's our goal at the beginning of the season is to win every game. (matt vandeberg) i mean they are kind of making it a rivalry between us but as far as we're concerned, you know it's just another game, it's the twelth game of the season we want to make sure that we are
10:24 pm
making it any bigger than it is. it is just another game that we want to go out and play. (desmond king) i wouldn't say it's a rivalry i mean it's a game between two hard teams and two physical defenses that's going for a trophy. the trophy stands for just being the toughtest team out there and being the smartest and most physical on the field. (greg maybin) one more game on our schedule. twelth game of the season. hopefully we can go twelve and 0 after this but other than that it's a big game don't get me wrong but we are not putting too much focus and too much energy into it. (tevaun smith) um i guess for them it's huskers is slated for 2:30 friday afternoon right here on local 5. be sure to tune in friday morning at 10 am for a pregame special and again at 6:30 friday night for a post game show right after local 5 news at 6. now tomorrow is thanksgiving-- and kirk ferentz has plenty to be thankful for--
