"local 5 news midday in hd starts now. we are iowa" elias: good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm elias johnson. elias: we have new details this morning on monday's double homicide that happened in des moines. elias: 39 year old michael wan- chanic the man suspected of killing 31 year old heather belieu and 39 year old bryon has been taken into custody after a stand-off with custody after a stand-off with police last night. elias: dallas county sheriffs deputies, iowa state patrol and other agencies faced off with michael wanchanic for four hours last night along highway 141. dallas county sheriff chad leonard said a tip came in shortly after 6 p.m.that wanchanic was at the caseys gas station in woodward when police responded- he drove off and a chase started.. but that beige dodge caravan police said he'd be driving- died on highway 141

wanchanic stranded. police kept their distance because even though wanchanic was alone-he did have a handgun and was threatening suicide. he reportedly never threatened any officers. four hours later, just before 10:30 p.m. sheriff leonard said wanchanic "got cold" and surrendered himself to police. wanchanic is being held here in polk county on two counts of first degree murder . he's expected to make his first appearance before a judge tomorrow morning. we'll be sure to bring you the latest information as this story continues to develop. elias: the brother of heather belieu spoke with local five yesterday about the tragedy his family is suffering... ryan belieu says he actually met michael wanchanic, the person of interest, last week. he says wanchanic came to the same house where the double homicide happened....but seemed quiet and didn't stay long. meanwhile, he confirms his sister and bryon howard had been dating for years, and just had a baby in march. while flipping through family photos, no one can understand what happened or why.

did knows that they got the chance to know her, she was a blessing. she was a really special person and she'd do anything for anybody she could" " elias: police still have not released how they died, or a motive as to why. police also removed two children from inside. heather's family confirmed all four of her children are currently staying with family and are ok. elias: now, this case stretched into story county as well. sheriff's deputies were asked by des moines police to conduct a welfare check in connection to the double homicide. on monday, they checked a home on the 100 block of 1st avenue in slater for peggy reed. reed's familys confirmed she is the ex-wife of wanchanic...and was picked up monday evening by the suspect just an hour after police discovered the double homicide. the dallas county sheriff

the new interchange is also part of a much bigger development project... called "kettlestone" that's being built along grand prairie parkway in waukee. elias: less than a month until iowa rolls out it's new medicaid plan. as it stands right now, 4 out-of-state companies will be taking it over, but there are some major concerns. . the medicaid change means big changes for child serve. it's an agency that helps children with special health care needs. they help 3- thousand families every year, about 75 percent of the families use medicaid to help pay for services. many parents are asking questions, and child serve is doing the best they can to answer them. lloyd 20:54:56 everybody wants to know what's happening, some of those questions we don't know what the answers are going to be yet. elias: three major concerns with the change from medicaid include that january 1

" " a standoff lasting more than four hours here on highway 141 ends the hunt for a person of interested wanted in monday's double homicide in des moines. -- state troopers were diverting traffic tuesday night in bouton while law enforcement were negotiating with a man in a standoff down the road. (very big relief we had about 30 officers on scene) officials got a tip about michael wanchanic being at a caseys in woodward -- once police responded -- a chase ensued. that's when he ran out of luck -- the van died, trapping him on 141. the dallas county sheriff's office says he was alone and had a handgun -- never pointing it at officers, but himself --

see a few rays of sunshine from time to time- especially in western iowa in the afternoon. it will stay cold and breezy, but mainly dry as our latest system moves away. expect to have some light morning snow greet you as you head to work. little to no accummulation is expected, except maybe on your car if its outside...grab the scraper. clearing skies will mean even colder temperatures wednesday night with lows in the 20s for many locations. a nice warm-up will begin thursday with lots of sunshine and southwesterly winds pushing our temps into the 40s. but the fun doesn't stop there! friday should be even warmer with highs in the upper 40s to the lower 50s with mostly sunny skies! there will be some clouds coming in saturday pm, but i still think we can get another mild day in the 50s. even next week is looking pretty mild for us now with highs mainly in the 40s and 50s and very little precipitation expected
