jail tonight. stephanie: it looks like guns will be a popular gift this christmas, sheriff's offices across the state are struggling to keep up with the demand for permits to carry. " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" jack/2shot good evening and welcome to local 5 news, home of we are iowa dot com. i'm jack miller. stephanie/2shot and i'm stephanie angleson. glad you're with us tonight. stephanie: a roosevelt girls basketball coach and special education teacher is in jail tonight... charged with felony sex abuse of a student... stephanie: des moines police say 46 year old gerald "tig" johnson.... is facing charges of sexual exploitation by a school employee...and assualt with intent to commit sexual abuse... investigators say he turned himself into authorities this afternoon after a warrant was placed for his arrest... this... just hours before his team was set to play a game tonight... local fives nikki davidson joins us now with more... nikki: right...

us coach johnson has been placed on adminstrative leave pending the results of this investigation... johnson just started coaching this team in the fall... but he is not a new face at the school. (nat buzzer) despite a whirlwind of rumors and speculation... it was clear the roosevelt girls basketball team was focused on one thing tonight... (cheers) puting their all into this game against hoover... while their head coach remained behind bars... four assistant coaches took on the job of leading the team... (nat) 15:22:42 this is a close knit community, regardless of what one person may have done or not done, depending on what we learn, they rally around each other. ending in a victory over hoover... 50 to 46. when it comes to the investigation... the des moines school district tonight tells us that they don't even know all the details... they're awaiting more information on the case from police tomorrow... what they do know is although gerald 'tig' johnson has only been back with the school for a few months... he was a familar and respected face in the althetlic department... 15:19:38 he was a coach for several years a decade ago at roosevelt h.s. he lead the team to 5 state tourneys and won a state title in 2006. (nat) johnson is also a special edcuation teacher at the school... district officials say another employee will be taking on his classes while he is on leave... and at this point, they aren't sure what to expect next.

hard to say, it something that depends on mr. johnson and his attorney, how soon or how long we know what happened... those steps are hard telling this evening. police aren't releasing details into the investigation but say they felt there was a enough to charge the coach with felony sex abuse. "there were interviews at the school, interviews with the victim." and say any case of this nature is especially sensitive to them... provider will spend 5 years in prison. christina williamson was sentenced today. she ran an in- home center at her home in pleasant hill... and was arrested back in may after her husband saw video of her abusing the children. today-- police are releasing that video, and we will be playing it for you shortly. it is disturbing, as a warning-- so if you don't want to see it, please turn away. now williamson had reached a plea deal in this case.. pleading guilty to two counts of child endangerment, in exchange for some other charges being dropped. here is that video. pkg ":21- ;42 christina williamson walks into the living room carrying a baby. she places a blanket on the floor and sets the baby onto the blanket on its stomach. she then pushes the child's head to the floor and holds it there for about :30 seconds and then gets up and leaves the room. 1:32-1:44 about two minutes later she comes back ,jerks the baby up off the floor and places it back down, once again holding the childs head to the floor. again, williamson leaves the room, 4:15-4:27 but when she comes back about 5 minutes later she walks through the room, pushes the baby's head to the floor using her foot, steps over the child and walks out. she's gone for another minute. 7:24-7:48

jack: we now know the names of the two people arrested in connection to the explosive device found in a newton neighborhood monday night. the jasper county sheriff's office says jennifer and david kelso are behind bars after police searched their home on first avenue west. no one was hurt, and people returned to their homes a few hours later. police say the investigation is ongoing. jack: it looks like guns will be a popular gift this holiday season. local sheriff's offices are struggling to keep up with the demand for permits to carry, and that's a big change from previous years. there are several factors at work here: a change in iowa's gun law from 2011. a lot of people are now people needing to renew their permit to carry because it's five years later. plus, recent news of gun violence making headlines. and high profile politicians talking about gun control. just inside the former scott county jail annex is a workshop full of old bicycle gears, tires and donated bikes that are need of desparte repair. all those parts are for the bicycle restoratoin program. it's designed to involve low risk-minimum security inmates sentenced to county jail time --- a chance to give back to the community. officer don rupe provides direction, (natural sound: officer rupe: it will help straighten that out) (alice) practical training and safety instruction as inmates work to refurbish the bikes. for the inmates, it's a chance to take something broken. (natural sound: hammer) (alice) and make it shine again. (dylan jungjohann/community restoration worker) building the bikes is fun because you get to see them in the state when you get them from the police department or whatever they're kinda brokok and stuff and you look at them and you're like wow i built that. it's a great feeling to look at it and know you fixed it" (alice) dylan jungjohann is a community restoration worker. he says the scott county jail has helped him turn his life around. there are incentives for working while serving time. officials say inmates have to pay 30 dollar a day to be at the jail. now if you work you only have to pay 5 dollars. officer rupe says this program also gives workers a chance hone a skill. over iowa, much to the chagrin of fred hoiberg. niang has never been one to mince words when it comes to the hawkeyes. today at the cyclones weekly press conference was no exception, it was classic georges being georges... "this is something a lot of us have been looking forward to. i feel like a lot of us aren't even from the state of iowa, but we definitely feel the rivalry and i don't wanna say hatred, but dislike toward that other school, but that's just what comes with the territory. they heckle more than other fans, i think that's just the biggest thing that gets my riled up." georges niang, what a guy! cyclones and hawks set to tip off thursday up at hilton at 630 pm. as georges mentioned, the isu seniors looking for their 3rd straight win over iowa since falling in 20-12. jordan meanwhile, about 24.5 hours following that cy-hawk game will be another cy-hawk game. the hawkeye and cyclone women will take the floor at hilton for their annual matchup. coach bill fennelly has led isu to a 12-7 record against the hawks in his tenure, including 9 straight at home... he and iowa coach lisa bluder share a lot in common. both from iowa, both went college in iowa, both have been coaching in iowa for 15 plus years. i asked coach just what makes coaching against lisa bluder fun and what makes it tough...
