nikki: on monday it wll be three years since the sandy hook shooting that killed 20 students and six educators... today a group in des moines remembered the victims, while calling for change. moms, faith leaders and elected officials held a orange eventto end gun violence... its part of a national movement... with orange walks held across the county including this one in des moines and in iowa city. they say the color orange symbolizes the value of human life and shared commitment to reduce gun violence in the country... and the walk serves as a reminder that the best way to honor victims is to keep moving forward. "things are changing i feel really optimistic every year on the anniversary i felt really sad but determined and this year i feel sad and determined but hopeful." nikki: todays walk was put on by the moms demand action for gun sense in america group... they say it shows legislators that they will be loud, and never stop fighting for gun laws. nikki: tough decisions for west des moines public

after enrollment dropped by more than a hundred students, the district now will have less money to spend on its programs--and some are on the chopping block. but before any decisions are made, they're asking the public for help local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more on the discussion. jacob? nikki, the district needs to cut nearly eight-hundred thousand dollars from its budget for next year. so, some long-time programs may not be offered next year. but there's a big group of students and parents that are hoping some of those are spared. lilah fidler has been taking japanese classes for two years in west des moines. but because enrollment dipped by 133 students, the district must save about $800-thousand dollars. that means those japanese courses could be eliminated. lilah fidler, sophomore: "i feel like people should have other options, in case they want translation jobs, or anything that would involve economic growth or globalization." dan carolin, japanese teacher: "there's a misperception of japan not being an important business player any more, but japan is an established commodity in the world economy." superintendent linda remy says the cuts aren't as painful as a couple years ago, when they were asked to trim nearly $3 million dollars from the budget. an advisory committee submitted 16 cost- cutting measures, which included dropping some language and music classes. district officials say they don't want the cuts to go into the classroom, but must consider it. dr. lisa remy, west des moines superintendent: "so, that's one of the things that i'm encouraging and challenging the district to maybe look at things a little bit differently, instead of grabbing the low hanging fruit, and that's kind of what i've seen in the recommendations that they've offered thus far." it's why they're taking feedback from parents and teachers about the decision in this small group setting. threase harms, parent: "where are the
