" local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" we start with breaking news. nikki: breaking details tonight in the death of a union county woman. officers have one man in custody and more remains have been found. good evening. welcome to local 5 news i'm nikki davidson. a 37-year old's body was found in a pond earlier this month. tonight, investigators are releasing new developments in the case. nikki: the case takes us south of the metro to union county. on december second, a hunter found the body of loretta dillenger in a farm pond near the union- madison county border. then just yesterday, iowa dci investigators searched two homes in the small town of thayer in connection to the death. one home was the last known address of the 37-year-old. nikki: local 5's jacob peklo joins us now live from creston as investigators have just finished up their press conference. jacob live " " jacob live

tonight in your local election headquarters. nikki: ted cruz jumps to the lead here in iowa in the latest des moines register poll. the texas senator leads with 31 percent of iowa republican's vote... trump only received 21- percent. just two weeks prior their numbers were swapped. nikki: new tonight at 10, a des moines woman is accused of child endangerment. nikki: police say she left three infant children alone in a car outside walmart while she went inside to buy tobacco products... customers at the store alerted an off duty police officer that there was a car in the parking lot with three small children unattended inside with wet diapers, one of them crying. according to the police report the temperature was only 49 degrees.... the doors to the car were unlocked and the keys in the ingition. it also says two unopened containers of beer were sitting in the front cup holders. police say the mother, vanessa booker is facing three charges of child

nikki: on monday it wll be three years since the sandy hook shooting that killed 20 students and six educators... today a group in des moines remembered the victims, while calling for change. moms, faith leaders and elected officials held a orange eventto end gun violence... its part of a national movement... with orange walks held across the county including this one in des moines and in iowa city. they say the color orange symbolizes the value of human life and shared commitment to reduce gun violence in the country... and the walk serves as a reminder that the best way to honor victims is to keep moving forward. "things are changing i feel really optimistic every year on the anniversary i felt really sad but determined and this year i feel sad and determined but hopeful." nikki: todays walk was put on by the moms demand action for gun sense in america group... they say it shows legislators that they will be loud, and never stop fighting for gun laws. nikki: tough decisions for west des moines public

after enrollment dropped by more than a hundred students, the district now will have less money to spend on its programs--and some are on the chopping block. but before any decisions are made, they're asking the public for help local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more on the discussion. jacob? nikki, the district needs to cut nearly eight-hundred thousand dollars from its budget for next year. so, some long-time programs may not be offered next year. but there's a big group of students and parents that are hoping some of those are spared. lilah fidler has been taking japanese classes for two years in west des moines. but because enrollment dipped by 133 students, the district must save about $800-thousand dollars. that means those japanese courses could be eliminated. lilah fidler, sophomore: "i feel like people should have other options, in case they want translation jobs, or anything that would involve economic growth or globalization." dan carolin, japanese teacher: "there's a misperception of japan not being an important business player any more, but japan is an established commodity in the world economy." superintendent linda remy says the cuts aren't as painful as a couple years ago, when they were asked to trim nearly $3 million dollars from the budget. an advisory committee submitted 16 cost- cutting measures, which included dropping some language and music classes. district officials say they don't want the cuts to go into the classroom, but must consider it. dr. lisa remy, west des moines superintendent: "so, that's one of the things that i'm encouraging and challenging the district to maybe look at things a little bit differently, instead of grabbing the low hanging fruit, and that's kind of what i've seen in the recommendations that they've offered thus far." it's why they're taking feedback from parents and teachers about the decision in this small group setting. threase harms, parent: "where are the

efficient, but also where is the fat within our budget and how and where can we cut that?" saturday's hearing was the fourth and final public comment period before wednesday's budget meeting. many parents argued that the district could make its final decision at its meeting on december 21st. nikki: one thing is clear... a lot of hawkeye fans are hoping to go to the rose bowl in california at the end of the month... and they're willing to pay a lot of money to do it... theres only 22 thousand tickets available.... but 54 thousand... 3 hundred eighty one tickets have been requested one tickets have been requested by fans. the average resale price of ticket is also up.... seats to the game are selling online on the site stub hub for six hundredy and ninety one dollars... nikki: local 5 sports director jon schaeffer is heading up our coverage of the rose bowl this year. our hawkeye headquarters reporter alex giamo will be out there with him. our rose bowl coverage kicks off monday january 28th. nikki: a fugitive from kansas might be in iowa tonight. u-s marshals are asking iowans to keep an eye out for 20 year old bryan bridges. bridges and a group allegedly broke into a kansas home on october 9th and ended up killing the homeowners when they unexpectedly came home. bridges is believed to have pulled the trigger. bridges has ties to iowa, mexico, and colorado, though no one's clear where he's headed. if you have any information, call the u-s marshals office at the number on your screen. nikki: a southern california mosque set on fire, tonight police have a person of interest in custody. but this isn't the only one to be

flames were reported friday afternoon at a center in palm springs. witnesses say they heard a loud boom before the fire. fire crews contained the blaze to the front lobby and no one was hurt. today, officials released a statement today calling the fire an " intentional act." nikki: meanwhile, vandalism at an islamic cultural center in pheonix arizona has their muslim community on high alert. it was discovered early thursday morning. officials say they do not believe the mosque was targeted. but the director of the center fears this attack is backlash from the recent terror attacks in paris and california. nikki: and new details tonight as fbi investigators search for more clues in that california attack. it's day three of searching a lake that is believed to be where shooters tried to get rid of important data. investigators are hoping to find evidence linked to the shooting inside inland regional center ...that left 14 dead. authorities say killers syed farook and his wife tafsheen malik visited the site. armed with metal detectors and protective gear, divers are

12 hours shifts, doing a grid search of the waterway. searchers have located items during the search but no word yet if the items are related to the case. nikki: and the u-s isn't the only country on guard for terrorists. they've upped security in switzerland following the arrest of two individuals this week. both individuals had syrian passports and were arrested on suspicion of the manufacture, concealment and transport of explosives and toxic gases, according to swiss prosecutors. and asked for the public's opinon on who's face should be on it. among the popular contenders are harriet tubman, first lady eleanor roosevelt, rosa parks, girl scouts founder juliette gordon low and helen keller. nikki: johnston residents be on the look out for coyotes in your neighborhoods. the johnston police department released an alert earlier this week. coyotes normally leave people alone, but can present a threat to small animals, like dogs or cats. so be sure to keep an eye on your pets. if you spot a coyote please contact johnston poli ce. nikki: iowa military families are spent time today to remember veterans. hundreds of people gathered at iowa veterans cemetery in adel for a short ceremony. then, families spread out all across the area, to lay wreaths on each of the gravestones. those with relatives at the cemetery laid their wreaths first, and then added the remaining wreaths across the site. it's the eighth year for the celebration, with similar events taking place all around the country. are iowa sports" jon: welcome back- it's the most recognized individual award in college football-- and while it may not tell where you'll rank at the next level-- it's the measure of the best in the fbs. it's the heisman trophy. alabama running back derrick henry was awarded the heisman trophy for the most outstanding individual player in college football saturday night in new york city. henry had 1,832 points in the voting, while stanford's christian mccaffrey finished second with 1,539. henry rushed for 1,986 yards in his junior season and scored 23 touchdowns this season. the last running back to win the heisman was mark ingram, also an alabama player. so here's one more look at the stats-- an sec record 1 thousand nine hundred and 86 yards. 23 touchdowns and he joins mark ingram as alabama's only runningbacks to win the prestigious award. let's head up to the campus of north dakota state-- aaron bailey quieting
