your forecast first." brad/wx wall weather adlib: our weekend is going real chill in the air as temps get about as all winter. well, that isn't saying that much mild weather, right? look for skies to become clear overnight with those cold winds pushing thankfully, those winds will diminish by morning, but temps will fall to the 10s for much of central iowa saturday will be a temperatures warming levels by afternoon. we should reach the with southerly winds of 7-14 mph. it will start to get breezier but with southerly holding pretty steady in the low to mid 30s. tonight, the toward finding justice for a school grad and good evening. i'm jack miller.

the night off. a year and a half after brandon ellingson drowned in the lake of the ozarks, charges are filed against a missouri state trooper who had him in custody. jack: the 20 year old was boating with friends in 2014, when he was arrested on suspicion of boating while intoxicated. trooper anthony piercy was taking ellingson back to shore and did not properly put a life jacket on him, when he fell into the water. piercy couldn't save him and he drowned. jack: local 5's jacob peklo sat down tonight with brandon's father, who says despite this arrest, there's still more work to be done to find justice for his son. jacob's here with more in tonight's big story. jacob: jack, it's been a roller coaster year and half for brandon's father....craig ellingson... and his family. today, the state trooper, anthony piercy, turned himself in to authorities. family members feel it's the first step toward justice, but more work needs to be done to fix the lingering problems inside

state patrol...to ensure that this never happens to anyone else. craig ellingson, brandon's father: "just hugging him. just saying i love you. we used to say that a lot." eighteen months have done little to dull the pain for craig ellingson. natural sound: "here's some of his football stuff." the memories and frozen images of his son brandon... still life today, as they twenty years. craig ellingson, mean, i go by his room every day and i've still pretty much in my office, pretty much all his accolades and stuff like that." even with the announcement friday that a missouri state trooper was turning himself in to authorities for his role in brandon's death in may of 20-14, ellingson says the battle he and his family have been fighting for so long, is still far from over. craig ellingson, brandon's father: "so, it's the start of justice for brandon." he says the whistle blowing of retired trooper randy henry helped balance out the testimony, which the family felt was unfairly stacked against brandon. nov. 25/randy henry, retired trooper: "i said, 'tony, i was going to support you through all this, but i said, you're lying to me. i said, 'we're done, i'm not going to support you at all, you killed this kid and now you're lying about it. you're not very remorseful if

craig ellingson, brandon's father: "they were afraid he was going to muddy up the water because he wasn't going to tell....he was going to tell the truth. they didn't want the murros talking, who were actually witnesses out on the water, they wouldn't let any of the girls talk." it's a tragedy he felt could have easily been avoided. craig ellingson, brandon's father: "and i think brandon felt safe with that cop because he was a cop, and you know, serve and protect. you know, he's going to take care of me and he was going to get fined and that was going to be it, and he was going to be free to go." ellingson says there have been some changes to the way missouri does business with its water patrols like taking part-timers off patrols, but still believes the responsibility falls on those in the state capitol, who he says approved a system desperately lacking accountability in training and execution of daily assignments. craig ellingson, brandon's father: "i believe this goes all the way up to nixon. he knows what happened and he's one of the reasons that brandon's not here." jacob: ellingson says

facing the manslaughter charges, it will likely change the civil case against the state patrol. peklo, local five iowa. jack ellingson was his degree at arizona state university by next spring. his dad says the plan was to have brandon join the real estate business with him. but now those plans won't ever happen. local 5 has been covring this story for more head to our website, we are iowa dot com, for all of our coverage. jack: evolution night club is closed again tonight, after they failed to get their liquor license back today. the license was revoked in november after a long list of fights and noise complaints were filed by neighbors. the most recent incident was the worst. the fatal shooting of 20 year old dashawn smith outside of the nightclub on november 8. the nightclub made an appeal following the liquor license suspension, but the appeal was dismissed. local 5 stopped by the nightclub

comment about the future of the club, but no one was there. their phone number is also temporarily disconnected. jack: a former roosevelt teacher was in court today. jack: gerald "tig" johnson had a preliminary hearing. johnson was charged earlier this month with one count of sexual exploitation by a school employee. he's accused of inappropriately touching one of his 16 year-old students. johnson's arraignment is set for january. jack: to the campaign trial now, where there's a major internal fight inside the democratic party tonight. the democratic national committee has suspended bernie sanders campaign's party's master list of voter the commitee staffers confidential files of rival candidate hillary clinton. abc's bazi kanani has the latest in election headquarters. the bernie sanders firing a campaign data breach: peeking past a temporarily failed firewall in a democratic national committee server to

hampshire tomorrow night. rick klein, abc news political director "it'll be delicate, but it's a powerful issue that she could use to undermine him." jack: the third democratic presidential democratic presidential debate is in new hampshire tomorrow, hosted by a-b-c. you'll see it here on local 5. all three candidates will meet on stage with hosts david muir and martha raddatz. jack: eddie tipton is back in the news tonight. the former security director for the iowa-based multi-state lottery association is now accused of tampering with drawings in four other states over a six year period. tipton is now connected to rigging jackpots in colorado, wisconsin, and

those state lotteries have confirmed they paid jackpots worth 8 million dollars to tipton associates. 37 other states are on the list investigators are looking at as well. tipton was convicted of installing an undetectable software program in the computers that pick winning numbers so he can know them in advance, and then works with other people to play those numbers and collect the money. he was caught and convicted when he tried to pull the same scam against the iowa lottery. jack: there are new details in the search for whoever was behind the wheel in monday's hit and run in ames. jack: iowa state freshman emmalee jacobs was hit and killed at the intersection of lincoln way and ash avenue-- just off of the iowa state campus. ames police have been taking tips and reviewing nearby surveillance video for the past five days. so far, none of the video clearly captures the ash-lincoln intersection. police say it was

police have also asked body shops in the areato be on the lookout in hopes of finding the vehicle involved. news in hd. home of weareiowa.com " jack: due to the rain and flooding, jolly holiday lights was cancelled for the season. that's a first in its 20 year history. the beloved christmas tradition put on by make a wish iowa takes around 14-hundred volunteers and three weeks to set up. make a wish says the cancellation may cost it more than 200 thousand dollars in donations.. that money can make

jack: but there's more to this story. this week mercy hospital stepped in, and helped raise money for make a wish. hospital staff and visitors helped donate to the make a wish campaign by rounding up their purcahses at the starbucks in the hospital and making donations at the gift shop. those who donated were recognized around the hospital with these light-up christmas pins they were given. jack: " we've seen spirits lifted by going through jolly holiday lights and its something that we enjoy we want to continue and we want our patients and children to enjoy that as well." and at the iowa afternoon all the money raised by mercy's efforts will be officially donated to jolly holiday lights. jack: winter farmers' market returned today and will be around tomorrow, if you want to stock up on locally grown and made goods for the holidays. the market will be open from 9

jon: welcome back- yesterday we showed you how the waukee girls basketball team balances focus with fun during practices. they're number one in class 5a taking on a centennial team hungry for a win after falling to valley tuesday night.

centennial trying to hand waukee their first loss of the season. waukee down 6 at half-- centennial extends it to 8 with a meg brandt floater down the lane. but the warriors with an answer. andy mataloni with a three pointer from the wing-- finds the bottom of the bucket. cutting the lead back to 5. jags with a rebutle-- kendyl lindaman drives the lane and gets the swish. waukee hanging tough though-- karlie littlefield on the back door cut-- easy lay in. then she causes a turnover-- and finishes it off with the pump and kiss off the windown for a pair. but everytime centennial would respond-- sydney wycoff with the three pointer-- nothing but net-- and centennial gets the win 57 to 49-- a solid win for the jags tonight on their home floor. to a big boys urbandale hosting dowling. third quarter 25-12 but luke just getting warmed up. from the corner.

from the wing-- we'll hear from him late in this game as well. joey kern driving the lane for the maroons-- gets fouled but gets the lay in to fall... dowling back in it. then kern draining a three from the wing-- it was like night and day first and second halves for the maroons. finally urbandale with a response darien smith on the offensive board-- puts it back up on the righty floater-- that drops for him. then eric milewsky gets the steal and will take it to the hoop for the layin this game would go to double overtime. final seconds of the game tavien gardner hits the free throw-- urbandale up one... then this happens... brendan dougherty the hail mary pass to luke eastman who gets the lay in before the buzzer sounds-- and dowling wins it in double overtime. 54 to 53 jon: welcome back. the drake bulldogs have admittedly under achieved on the mens basketball floor. at 4-6 the bulldogs have lost three straight.

they've been blown out-- they've kept up with some very good teams. tomorrow in the big four classic they'll take on the hawkeyes. they watched that iowa versus iowa state game from last week-- and know how dangerous the hakweyes are. but don't discount the bulldogs. a win for them puts them back in a good spot with just a couple of games left before missouri valley play. "10 freshmen and sophomores on this roster. it would go a long ways as far as confidence and understanding you know what it takes to beat a big ten team so i don't know if you can measure it. a win would be unbelievable i mean we're playing in front of 15-16 thousand people at wells fargo against a big ten team against iowa. that's what we want that's the games we want to play in that's why you strap em on every day so we're excited. " on the other end-- the iowa hawkeyes have won 4 of their last five games. the only loss in that span was to iowa state last thursday. fran mccaffery isn't taking this game lightly-- he has a lot of

giocolletti has done with the bulldog program. but a statement win tomorrow would bring back quite a bit of confidence for the hawkeyes who need to move on from that loss to the cyclones. "i think it's a team that's been impressive they have a tough overtime loss at tulane a game they played tremendously well in than an overtime win over western kentucky a win in a tournament situation so this is a team that has impressed me on film but i'm not surprised i have a lot of respect for ray and his body of work.
