exciting to be here on the ground. but i think we're living in a very critical moment in our history and i think our next leader will be really important. and for me, there's no question in my mind that hillary clinton is the most qualified, most experienced. the person with the right ideas. but i think it's really going to move our country, really bring it up a level. >> our mutual friend, he and i have been at political conventions together. people come up to him and ask him questions, you know about politics, do you get that a lot being on television? >> i do. >> they ask me if i'm going run for president. like hillary clinton did. >> tony goldwin is here in iowa. we're going to sheet brand-new premiere of the project richard

thanks for chatting, take care, buddy. what i love about the caucus process, is the old-fashioned caucus democracy. we have much too much of it in the united states of america, >> if you're a first-time caller, i think samantha clements is guilty. i'm glad she's stepping down. we don't need tax thieves like her in our government. >> do you have any idea how much damage this has caused to all

tell us about this and the work that goes on here. >> i started it in 1985. if a young man comes out. i would say let me put my vision here and help. i got a grant from the city of des moines and opened up on the corner here and i didn't have to help people with their dreams. if you give them political clout. our major focus is substance abuse and mental health. if you have issues with substance abuse, we can help. is because we're the right place at the right time. we can really help a lot of people. >> you mentioned three

9:42 am
9:43 am
i was 5 years old. what we can develop this for. the community leaders, black and white can be powerful in the country. this is the first theme forum in america. there's only four forums in america. four. new hampshire has one. des moines has two. the "des moines register" -- new hampshire had one. c-span, without the white house, we'll cover the first show out
9:44 am
first show c-span covered on the road to the white house is what we did. >> you mean serious road to the white house? >> we were the first one in america. >> wow. >> so, issue of race. yeah, we got challenges here. iowa has a lot of minorities in prison. we have the same problems that other communities have, chicago, what we do have here, how obama, when he became president. no one thought a black man could take a white state. what i tell you about iowans, they do care. the civil war in the south, we fought for the south. the other thing, more white men died percent capita fighting for me to be free than any other state in america. percent capita. i know these facts. look at iowa, and you ask, why iowa? iowa allowed me to grow.

we'll be back. welcome back to "roske on politics." here with us is a very special guest. nina turner, thanks for chatting today. >> it's my pleasure. >> you're participating in iowa caucus television. and you supported and endorsed senator sanders. is that correct? >> have. i'm glad to be here because this is where it all begins. >> now, you have been involved with the clinton family in the past. you supported senator sanders. why are you supporting bernie? >> you know, senator sanders has a righteous indignation, regarding all of the things i
9:47 am
when i peel back the layers and listening to what he has to say about working corps and middle class people. and access to the ballot box is the most important thing to me. i said this is the man i have to support. senator sanders is the right person being the next president of the united states of america. his righteous indignation and the fact he's been in the elective ministry for over 30 years and has not changed what he believes is right for the people he represents. whether that be a mayor of burlington, congressman in vermont now senator. he's held steady to listen to people in this state and now this country. >> our own path to elected government, you had six siblings, you are ate seventh? tell us about it. >> i my parents got married young, i grew up in the
9:48 am
i help made mother supplement the income. there's times we didn't have food to eat. we slept in the same room. my mother died at 42. an aneurysm burst in her brain. my journey has been hard. senator sanders is not afraid to talk about poor people. and having someone give up on me. i may not have had the successes. whether becoming a college graduate or a councilwoman and then state senator, then running for office in the state. all of that would not have been available to me had folks given up on me. when senator sanders talked about making sure our young people are not saddled with debt so they can bream big, or make sure universal health care is a right. when somebody turns 18 years of age, they have a right to vote. putting people back to work to
9:49 am
that speaks to me. >> i believe one of the clintons got involved cam papering for you. >> that's not true. >> what happened? >> the clintons did not campaign for me. i know people think that happened. that never happened. it was a letter written on my behalf by president clinton. i was happy to receive that letter. it was a fund-raising letter. i used that letter to fund raise with my donors. there was no campaigning or any of that. that was a bit exaggerated. >> the other two candidate, governor o'malley and secretary clinton, any thoughts on their campaign? >> this is not about any of those candidates. this is about the future of america. you have to make a choice. i think the democratic candidates are much better suited than anybody on the republican side.
9:50 am
to endorse is senator bernie sanders. the person i tried to tell his story, the story why i believe he can take our country to the next level. that's why i'm here in iowa today. >> are you enjoy participating in the iowa caucus? >> i am. my brother went to clinton community college years ago. he came -- he's from ohio, so, this is not my first time to iowa. it's been a while. but i'm getting those warm and fuzzy feelings back all over again, but, yeah. >> if you're a former ohio state senator, have you noticed in your time here, big difference to iowa politics or similar? >> it's too early for me to tell. iowa and ohio has similarities, cultural similarities. i feel right at home in iowa. >> to give people an idea -- so, to give people an idea what they are tasking you with, you are traveling on behalf of the sanders campaign.
9:51 am
>> i'm a national surrogate. my job is to cme to events like this. i'm here to support the volunteers to let them know work is not in vein and they are the most important people in this process. every person they touch that person will come to know senator sanders through their eyes. to be here, to be in new hampshire. i was just here with a democratic debate, i'll go to south carolina, my job is touch people. whether it's a big audience, i'm going to be out there rallying the troops and letting them know that their work is not in vein, they believe in senator sanders and his vision for the future of this country. they are on the right path and he can win. >> my final question. electability. what are your thoughts about the sanders general election? how do you think he'll do?
9:52 am
9:53 am
so, he's going to do well. that's it for another episode of "roske on politics." actually former governor of iowa, former house, right? >> it's the -- 17th governor of the state of iowa, also two term u.s. senator. this is his personal residence. >> this is where brian's studio is. it's fantastic. the drawing in your hand here, though, it's donald trump climbing the building but it's not the empire state building? >> no, it's not. it's our own version of the empire state building and i drew this back in june. i think it's come to fruition. he is -- he's -- >> yeah.
9:54 am
>> yeah. but just barely that time. so, we'll see if he gets toppled. it's -- i have a gop window here on the side. i think that i was -- i think i was pretty precious in coming up with this idea. because he is still around. i think the majority of people around there won't would even think he would be around at this time doing this television show. >> brian duffy is the political cartoonist. his new book. iowa caucus cartoons. plenty of time to get it for the holidays.
