officially winter, it is really not going to feel much like winter this week. tonight will be cool and dry with decreasing clouds late tonight. we should start out with some sunshine tuesday but then clouds will make for a partly sunny afternoon. with some sunshine and southerly winds returning, we will be able to get our temps back into the 40s in the afternoon. tuesday will be dry, but it is looking a bit rainy for wednesday. another system will be coming out of the sw and bringing us a good chance for rain. the heaviest of this rain will fall again over eastern iowa where about a half of an inch is expected. thursday (christmas eve) we are going to have a slight chance for some snow! right now, it looks like sw iowa will have the best chance to get an inch or two, but this is not a large weather system by any means. it might be just enough to give some locations a white christmas! either way it will be cloudier and colder thursday for most locations. by christmas day we are looking at milder conditions as another strong weather system approaches. we should be milder with highs back in the 40s with rain showers possible by afternoon and into the evening. the clouds are likely to stick around all through the weekend with a few showers possible, but some heavier rain may return to iowa next monday. " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" jack: good evening. i'm jack miller. stephanie has the night off. jolly holiday lights is one of the biggest fundraisers for make a wish iowa all year long. but this year, it was cut short.... .... as floodwaters drenched the displays and doused fundraising hopes for the season. it had all the makings of a disaster. but that's when some great community leaders stepped in. jack: local 5's jacob peklo joins us now with more, jacob?

have been easy the season wouldn't be so make a wish but it took commitment to keep the instead, those waves, long is over. the outline still remains for the jolly holiday lights in des short by flooding. only thing darkened by chris voggesser, make a wish iowa ceo: "at a want something good happen, we were able to make something bad for us turn it into something wonderful." the annual show was supposed to continue until the new year... expected to pull in nearly $200-thousand dollars for the make a wish foundation. several groups turned that setback into a personal challenge...including iowa clinic ceo ed brown. ed brown, iowa clinic ceo: "we thought it was a great cause, something that we could all get behind as health care leaders. we had no idea what it would culminate into." it became a true community effort, one that far exceeded the boundaries of the metro, getting donations from all over the country. chris voggesser, make a wish iowa ceo: "we've

money we raise needs to go to the kids and that's where it's going to go." local businesses, classrooms, and neighbors contributed to the cause. on monday, three local hospitals gave their gifts to ceo chris voggesser, chipping in $60- thousand in just over a week's time. all adding up to nearly $400,000 for make a wish. chris voggesser, make a wish ceo: "i can't say enough about this community and what it means for us to be make a wish iowa." and those contributions will go toward repairing the lights, but it'll also ensure even more wishes come true. ed brown, iowa clinic ceo: "and if we're fortunate, we're going to be able to see those funds grow, to be there for the kids." chris voggesser, make a wish iowa ceo: "you'll get to know where this money goes. you'll see videos of our wish kids, you'll see photos of our wish kids, and we're going to post them and snap them on #bringthejolly because everyone's still connected." jacob there's still time to make a contribution to make a wish. if you want to bring the jolly, you can do so through january first. live in the studio, jacob

iowa. jack: make a wish officials say they've already met 53 wishes in their new fiscal year. they're working to fulfill about 190. jack: we've learned what's going to be cut from west des moines schools next year. that's new tonight at ten. jack: the district will be cutting 13 items. one is the foreign language program for first through third graders. the program will continue for grands 4 through 6. also cut, the des moines art center scholarships, which helped 50 students attend classes during the summer. there will also be no more 3- year-old general education preschool offered by the district. and valley high school will begin to phase out japanese language classes next year. all these cuts will save west des moines schools nearly 600-thousand dollars. the district originally had a goal of saving 800-thousand. it's not clear if more cuts are ahead. jack: meanwhile, a hazing incident at an ankeny school. an investigation has started at

school. it apparently involved 11 students. in a statement today, the district says it's committed to the safety of all students. it says, quote: "when concerns or issues regarding student conduct arise, ankeny schools administrators investigate reports and then follow policy set by the board of education, based on the circumstances." the district isn't commenting on any disciplinary action against the students involved. jack: a driver plows into a bunch of people on the vegas strip. tonight the woman behind the wheel faces murder charges. jack: last night, 24 year old lakeisha holloway veered onto the side walk, accelerating into the crowd. jessica valenzuela -- a wife and mother of three from arizona was killed. at least 35 others were hurt. holloway's three year old child was inside the car with her. investigators don't believe alcohol was involved, but they're testing whether holloway was under the influence of drugs. she's now facing

and possibly several counts of attempted murder. jack: the manhunt goes on for the texas teenager whose infamous affluenza defense spared him jail time for a deadly drunk driving accident. there's a 5- thousand dollar reward in the case. and ethan couch's mother has officially been declared a "missing person" as well. the two are believed to be on the run together. couch was 1616 when he killed four people while driving drunk. but using the "affluenza" defense, his lawyers essentially arguing he was too spoiled to know the consequences of his actions. jack: an entire school district in new hampshire was shut down today because of a threat of violence. administrators got an e-mail yesterday threatening two high schools in nashua. police say the cancellation gave them time to do safety checks in all schools. even if the

isis is showing videos of trump as a recruiting tool. the clinton campaign says she wasn't referencing any specific video. the white house and terror experts say there's no hard evidence isis is using videos of trump to recruit. jack: fox news channel announced today that it will host another republican presidential primary debate next month in iowa. the two-hour debate will be held january 28th at the iowa events center in des moines, it's the last republican debate before the february 1st iowa caucuses. jack/lam: so with lindsey graham out tonight -- who's next? one of the frequent guests on our weekly political show "this week in iowa" here on local five has some predictions. pat rynard is behind the liberal blog "iowa startling line." and in a recent post, he ranked who's most likely to drop out if they have a poor showing in the iowa caucuses. here is rynard's top 5. rick santorum. mike huckabee. martin o'malley.

jon: randy hinkel was a winner. the word loss wasn't one that stayed in his vocabulary very long. but sunday the town of madrid lost their beloved coach who helped create the jungle and all that it means. " it's a great night we're going to have a big crowd. playing a good football team. man we get to showcase the talents coach perkins said it best. he's like our whole coaching staff. we want you to unleash your best performance of the year. that's four quarters of go get them be true to your reads being strong discipline good pad height and carrying out fakes if we can do this i guarantee you a tiger victory. october 9th was one of the few times this past season-- that didn't happen. randy

"nat or are we going to finish it off win the next two?" hinkel embraced the wishbone offense-- and he was meticulous with the study of it. in 29 seasons as the head coach of the madrid tigers hinkel accrued 264 wins and just 58. he led his teams to 25 of the last 26 state playoffs-- was state runner up 7 times. and crowned champion once-- in 1991. nat "we have the whole crowd on there just juices us up." in his coaching career-- hinkel is one of only 12 football coaches in the state to eclipse 300 wins. but more important than wins randy hinkel developed boys into some great young men who will surely miss their football coach.

football randy hinkel also coached track and field for the tigers-- he coached 5 state championship teams and produced numerous individual state winners. jon: a little different schedule this week for high school hoops with christmas falling on friday. teams tipping off tonight instead of tuesday. the johnston girls basketball team has been on a tear recently-- and ranked number two. they're coming off of a big win over valley and looking for another against 11th ranked southeast polk tonight. we head to southeast polk high school fourth quarter.. this one coming down to the wire... johnston moving the ball nicely-- working it inside to taryn knuth who puts it off the window and in. dragons up 4 with under four minutes to play. but southeast polk fights back down three casey stuart with a three from way downtown-- tie game. after a foul-- rachel hinders hits both free throws
