local 5 news midday...i'm nikki davidson. nikki: a wednesday morning fire hit a family business in the metro, leaving nearly nothing behind. it happened at "auto parts on maury" ... a salvage shop on maury street in des moines. the shop is run by a 19 year old man, his younger cousins and a few close friends. many are working at the store to save money for college or to help pay other bills. they had just renovated the building and had been working on renovated the building and had been working on something extra special for christmas-- until the fire took it all away. local 5's claire powell has their story. " when i got out here theflames were 20-25 feet above the building " just before 10 am-- flames came shooting from the top of auto parts on maury... "we were in the first bay getting cans because my cousin wanted extra chrimstas money, he noticed the building had more smoke than usual" after checking a back room- silsby's cousin, the owner, noticed flames coming from

"probably ten seconds later i wouldve had flames right over my head" they were going to give it to their little brother for christmas this year. "supposed to be a christmas present, we were trying to get it out, the building fell on top of it,well we dont have time to get that " silsby said before the fire, they were wrapping up for the week, heading to the recycling center- then... to the mall for last minute shopping. "we were gettign ready to go christmas shoppign today, thats what the cans were for" "it was wild, side started falling trying to get eveyrhting out they could but it was just a little too late i think" silsby said the rain helped slow the fire- but not before it took the newly renovated parts store completely. he's not sure when or if they'll start over again. "trying to piece it together, make it in to a... a better shop" nikki: des moines fire department says

people running for president with names that, by now, you've probably heard. nikki: they're spending lots of time in iowa in the run- up to the caucuses. but there are also a whole bunch more who are just trying to catch a little bit of the national attention. and one of them just moved into a west des moines neighborhood. his name is rocky de la fuente and there's a problem-- his neighbors and the city, don't want his campaign there. (bells) when democratic presidental candidate rocky de la fuente opened his doors for a holiday party inside his

residence tonight... he had visions of santa... christmas trees, and colored lights... but he also got a visit from police. 17:04:41 it just violates city ordinance, it just does. when we get complaints, we have to take proper steps to make sure people are following ordinances. west des moines officers tell us in the past few days the city has gotten numerous complaints from the neighborhood... residents feel the big trailer and bus labeled "rocky 2016.com" isn't something they want in their quiet suburban neighborhood. tonight the candidate himself invited us into his new home... (this is my war room) a local headquarters of sorts for his campaign. 17:27:44 i'm gonna be here the month of january, feb, march, even through when the election is done, it will be over but peoples problems won't be solved. he says some neighbors have greeted him warmly... others made it clear they don't like this campaign resources... 17:19:42 i have one four houses down, they dont like my bus, they have to be patient i just moved in... police say rocky is in violation of city ordinance so he has to move these in the next seven days. he tells us... they will be gone long before that... he wants his signs mobile all over

(see we did the front and back) he says all the decorations are to make his home look like the north pole. 17:22:10 everybody has the right, i don't tell you what to do. i'm a good neighbor, i consider people but somtimes people should be more patient. if they see we just moved in, give me moer than two days. nikki: police say those resources actually violate two different city ordinances, and they will be following up to make sure the presidental candidate is following city code. nikki: on the national campaign trail and the race for the white house- two top

"i'll always remember his passion that he had for the game of football but not only for the game of football but passion for us as players and the community and he always wanted us to succeed after football and in life." "he doesn't care about himself, he doesn't care about the wins or losses, he cares about what you're learning, what he can teach you for life, how he can prepare you for the future and that's why everyone's here, because he did that for so many people and impacted so many lifes." "football's just a nice thing to have that he was a great coach and a great person, but he was an awesome guy outside, loved to joke around with us and ya he was a great guy and he'll be missed.. nikki: a memorial fund has been set up in randy's name.

police dispatch audio from the laquan mcdonald shooting in chicago. the 17 year old, holding a knife, was shot 16 times by an officer back in october 2014. " dispatch: "and we've got...asking for a taser for an offender with a knife." asking for a taser. as we've heard in the past, the first officers responding to the area where laquan mcdonald was shot found him brandishing a knife, behaving erratically. there'd been reports he'd been breaking into trucks, stealing radios. police say he slashed a tire on one of their squads. they wanted to use a taser to subdue him, but only sergeants have those. so they wait for a sergeant. that goes on for a little while, as the 17-year-old, still holding the knife, is trailed by police. dispatch continually requests updates. dispatch: "anybody close...? responding officer: "...we're about two blocks away." but that's not a response from a sergeant. it's not an officer armed with a taser. additional squads are now closing in on the teen. dash-cam video released by the chicago police department tells part of the story, but due to a technical glitch,
11:34 am
responding squads had working dash- cams, the city says, so now we hear how this unfolded. the dispatcher appears to be taking great care to stay on top of the what's unfolding at 41st and pulaski, telling officers who weren't there to keep the channel clear, awaiting word that the teen with the knife has been subdued and arrested. we're replaying the next words in real time, as dispatch asks for another update and is told mcdonald has been shot. dispatch "let me know when he's in custody, guys." responding officer: "shots fired by police. shots fired by police...over here." --suggested tag-- prosecutors say officer jason van dyke stepped from his squad car and almost immediately started shooting, firing 16 times. no other officer on the scene fired a shot. van dyke is now charged with first- degree murder."
