first responders hard at work on christmas day. how essential employees prepare and keep the city running like clockwork. " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" nikki/1shot: good evening. welcome to local 5 news, home of we are iowa dot com. i'm nikki davidson. glad you're with us tonight. nikki: des moines police made a violent arrest late christmas eve. police were sent to the southside liquor and tobacco outlet in des moines yesterday evening .... after an employee was stabbed in the arm. the suspect, described as a black male wearing a stocking hat and a black bandana over his mouth and nose came into the store... and demanded the money from the register. the suspect attempted to get away on foot, but was taken into custody by police. 22 year-old corderro laurence was charged with robbery and assault . after arriving at the police department, laurence was asked to change his clothes into the official jumpsuit, according to the report... he refused and threatened

swinging it. he was also charged with assault on an officer, with official acts, and resisting arrest. nikki: des moines community members gathered for a vigil protesting governor branstad's record on immigrants and refugees. two dozen protestors held up signs reading, "jesus was a refugee" and "would branstad detain jesus at the border?" they also sang traditional christmas carols, saying the governor's stance on immigrants and refugees was anti-christmas behavior. nikki/1shot: a christmas morning crash has left six people... including one family with small children in the hospital... highway patrol says a jeep driven by ruth tomlinson was traveling east on d 20 when it drifted across the center line... and struck a truck traveling westbound... both drivers, as well as a third adult , an infant, three year old and six year old child were all injured in the crash and taken to unity point hospital... the fort dodge community is now rallying around one of the

they've started this gofundme for brooke and justin henry and their three children.... the creator of the page says the money will go toward the family's medical treatment... so far more than 3 thousand dollars have been raised. our big story today nikki/1shot: while many of us were kicking back this christmas, there were hundreds of other people hard at work around the metro. local five's jacob peklo joins us now with more. jacob/bam: nikki, it can be hard to find a lot of things that are open on christmas day. and for the most part, we can wait until they reopen in a few days. but the crews i spent time with today, keep the city running, and we're grateful for their selflessness. natural sound of crane lowering ahman douglass is one of seven firefighters, checking in for another day of service. ahman douglass, des moines fire department: "the emotional tug just comes when you realize that you're not going to be around your family for 24 hours." often, that means time...maintaining equipment. nats but there are moments, like 20 years ago, where he helped fight a major fire. ahman douglass, des moines fire department: "on 23rd street, between forest and university, and we just about lost one of our

saved, though it brought his career to an end." it's why it's so pivotal to stay ready for whatever comes their way. nats across town, the mercy medical flight team is also on standby, ready for emergencies all across the metro. they've prepared their chopper for everything, from car accidents, to patient transportation. ashli formaro, flight nurse: "it's nice to see everyone and spend christmas with all our co-workers. at night, it's always nice to see all the christmas lights from up above. it's a little different perspective." while they hope it's an easier day, they're happy to be together. ashli formaro, flight nurse: "we can get called at any time to go on a scene flight or to transport from another hospital, and we're ready to go within a minute." jacob peklo, reporting: "actually for a good portion of christmas, the helicopter was not able to take off. they need at least 500 feet of ceiling to do so. if you look over my shoulder, you can downtown is not that visible. it's only about 200 feet or so." that means all emergencies must be handled by ambulances on the ground crew. nats a few rooms away, a team of nurses is there to help out new families. cassie mason, mercy medical center nurse: "we usually have a lot more working. but we don't have as many patients today, no scheduled c-sections or induction."

they receive each holiday, getting to see the beginning of new families. it's a moment they'll never forget. cassie mason, mercy medical center nurse: "this is what i signed up for, i knew i was going to have to work holidays. i like being there for these special moments, for these new moms." jacob one benefit that we learned for the first responders and other emergency personnel working today is they know they're working well ahead of time. often, it's a year or more, so they can schedule family time around that. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. nikki: local 5 went to the movies today nikki: and we weren't alone. jordan creek town center was packed with people... for many theaters, it's the busiest day of the entire year. it meant full staffing by the theater...anyone on the staff who could work was called in to do so. it's a tradition that families keep returning to after a morning together. "it's something you can do as a family and you can spend time with family cause it's christmas, so it's fun."

earlier because our childern are acutally working at the concession stand both of them so we were here and we went to buy the tickets, and what a suprise there were no tickets. " nikki: lots of people had the same idea. we were told several shows, including star wars, joy and sisters all had shows sell out at jordan creek. nikki: amy demarest, des moines resident: "there were christmases where it was just my husband and i, and we just decided there was no reason to cook two big meals christmas eve and christmas day, and we just decided let's do the chinese buffet, because it's the only thing open." another popular desination for families today was the hibachi grill in west des moines. open until 10 pm today, the chinese buffet restaurant made christmas dinner just a little bit easier. nikki: coming up on local 5 news at 10... we'll take a trip around the world to see how people celebrated this christmas day. nikki: then an illinois woman discovers she is related to a famous christmas carol composer.

(nats/sot) "monster tornado" barbara williamson lost her home in bellevue, mississippi. 14, including children, lost their lives... as unseasonably warm weather spawned at least two dozen reported tornadoes.
