carved by a neighborhood nearby, and it's not just texas tonight. 80 million americans in the path ofof this monster tomorrow. this truck completely truck. and it's on one of the busiest travel days of the season. and thousands of delays, hundreds of cancellations, but we begin first with one of the most powerful twisters in years. matt gutman leading us off from hard-hit garland.. >> reporter: overnight, that tornado ploding over these north texas suburbs, this one turning into a pillar of fire as blew up transformers and sparking panic. >> that's it! it's a tornado! >> reporter: those1 people killed in separate locations. at least five died as the storm

>> i can see it. >> reporter: night those flashes of lightning. illuminating the monster. the sirens blared asas that wee darkened the sky. >> reporter: the tornado that crashed down in garland, texas clocked as an ef4, whipping winds as fast as 200iles per hour. in the morning light the devastation revealed. you can see that the line of damage, a football field wide, as if a giant 100-yard-wide claw had raked this neighborhood of rowlette. semis and trucks tossed like toys. trees uprooted, ancient oaks snapped. the winds so strong, they even destabilized the town's water tower. authorities evacuating everyone within a 250-foot radius. power lines twisted around this shattered neighborhood like yarn.

there are so many components to it. heavy rainfall, and on the backside, the winds come out of the north. so, the cold air fueling the blizzard threat for the panhandle and oklahoma city. places like chicago with a winter storm warning, and winds gusting to 60 miles per hour. very, hour cold out there. going to fuel the windchill to the teens. and in the northeast, a wintry mix in boston. and we move to another police shooting causing outrage. officers inhicago killing a teenager and his neighbor, a mother of five, inside her own home the department now facing tough new questions. here's's alex perez.

under scrutiny after another controversial shooting. 55-year-old bettie jones and 19-year-old college student t quintonio legrier dead. >> we got two people shot. shots fired by the police. just to confirm. >> yes, they were. >> reporter: early saturday morning, police responding to a domestic disturbance call on the top floor of this two-story home. legrier portedly threatening his father with a bat. >> upon their arrival, they were confronted by a combative individual. >> reporter: jones lived on the ground floor. loved ones say she was opening the door for police when legrier began to make his way down the stairs and she was caught t in a spray of bullets fired by police. authorities saying jones was accidentally and tragically killed. the police department extending condolences condolences. frustrated loved ones demanding answers. >> why you got to shoot first and ask questions later? >> she should not have to come outside open the door and be shot down by a police officer.

good night.team and we start with your forecast first." bree/wx wall weather adlib: a winter storm warning will be in effect for a vast majority of iowa through the day on monday and expire by early in the day on tuesday. overnight tonight, temperatures will dip into the teens and 20s as the storm lifts into the state from the south. the approaching winter storm will cause travel headaches for monday. western and central iowa should expect mainly snow, although freezing rain and sleet in the metro are possible. eastern iowa should expect a mixed bag of freezing rain, rain, and snow as the day progresses. winds will also be very strong at 15-25+mph, gusting to near 40mph at times. there is the potential for power outages with this storm, particularly in areas where ice accumulates on the power lines. possible snow totals with this system range from 5 to 8" in central iowa, so stay with local 5 for the latest. the system will start moving out late monday night with most of iowa remaining mainly dry for tuesday.
