"you're watching good morning iowa in hd. we are iowa's most accurate weather team. good morning iowa starts now " elias: good morning iowa! i'm elias johnson it's just after 6:00 a-m on december 29th... we appreciate you joining us. elias: if you didn't do it last night-- you're likely waking up to
6:01 am
foot of snow to dig out from this morning. meterologist sam schreier joins us right the snowfall sam: (sam adlibs) sam sam: weather adlib: sam/tags on cam tonight it should be very chilly as temps fall into the upper iowa with a very calm are going to see some more snow showers move through in the morning with a quick one to two inches possible, so the morning commute could be a bit slower. we are going to fall extra cold by the end of the week with highs in the upper teens on thursday and a high near 20 on friday. we should warm back into the 30s by the end of the weekend and into early next week with another snow possible around next tuesday. elias:
6:02 am
let's get into the top five stories this morning.... elias: and the weather is our top story... bad roads, slipping and sliding and digging out ... road conditions were not great after a half-foot of snow fell. we'll check back in with sam in a bit for more details. elias: number two is... bit for more details. elias: number two is... what public works crews are doing about it. the city of des moines has 700 miles of residential streets to plow. once snow routes were done, they were moving onto residential streets which is still happening now. elias: the third thing
6:03 am
know before you walk out the door... there could be a rush at the des moines airport today. many flights out of the des moines international airport were delayed or even cancelled on monday. but the airport says they've got new tools that will hopefully minimize delays... we'll show you that a little later. elias: moving away from weather for number four... elias: des moines' latest homicide victim was found shot to death at an apartment on the south side of des moines. and so far, nobody's been arrested. police say 36 year old tacono conner was found dead overnight sunday. 37 year old ami stolki was also shot but is recovering from her injuries at a hospital. police say they have a person of interest they're tracking down to interview. this is des moines' 21st homicide of the year, the second highest on record. elias: and finally in the top five... elias: des moines police are asking
6:04 am
catch a serial robber. they say this same man is behind five robberies at three convenience stores in des moines. he never shows a weapon, but does threaten violence. the suspect is described as a white man in his 20's, about 6 feet tall and 200 pounds. know who he is? county crime stoppers: 223- 1400. so plow crews keeping busy today. des moines been out with crews overnight clearing roads. they're on 12 hour shifts. and once they're done with plowing, they plan to also put a layer of rock salt down to prevent slippery surfaces. elias: most metro cities also have their snow ordinances now in effect-- which means you can't park on snow routes. plows need open streets to clear the way. in des moines, they've also implemented their even/odd plowing system for neighborhoods with limited off-street parking. the neighborhoods involved in this can be seen on your screen.
6:05 am
between the hours of 7 a-m and 7-pm you have to be on a certain side of the street. odd days of the month mean you park on the odd-address side of the street. if you don't follow the law .... it's a 35 dollar fine. if you're curious, you can also track state d-o-t plows while they're on the clock. the dot has a website dedicated to it. the orange arrows are where the plows are right now. elias: we're back with meterologist sam schreier and central iowa' most accurate forecast. how was your drive in this morning? sam (ad lib discussion-- how was the drive?) sam:
6:06 am
weather adlib: sam/wxwall toss back to elias elias: thanks sam. many flights out elias:
6:07 am
thanks sam. many flights out of the des moines international airport were delayed... or even cancelled monday. some stranded passengers tell us. they might not be able to fly out till the end of the week. local 5's nikki davidson gives us a look at what the airport says it's doing to minimize delays right now. its the one time of year when passengers are hoping the airport benches are more comfortable than their airline seat... most are spending a lot of time ... right here. 18:39:09 six hours... but david ruggle is one of the lucky ones... his flight to houston hasn't been cancelled... yet 18:39:35 its been changing pretty rapidly, we'll watch the board and see what happens. it's part of the almost inevitable holiday travel nightmare... 18:40:00 i expect things like this to happen around christmas, not to me haha but to
6:08 am
but this year the des moines airport says they've got something new they hope will help cut out the headaches... its not something passengers see.... but it's vital to keeping flights on time in winter weather. 18:29:31 the whole goal is to clear the runway in 15 minutes or less. (nat) this giant is what the airport calls multi tasking equipment.... (nat whirling) they just got in two of them this year... a plow and a broom in one. 18:29:10 one operator can do what 2 would do the epuipment operates quicker. the crew works as a team (nat rodger we'll finish delta and bravo) pushing waves of snow off of the runways like clockwork. 18:29:36 the less time we spend on a runway the more time it's available for aircraft. they work long 12 hour shifts... day quickly turns to night... but at a time like this... they say they've got a pretty good incentive. you see on the news those people sleeping
6:09 am
to get them out and where they need to go. nikki, thanks. the weather also causing trouble at airports nationwide. nearly 2,000 flights were cancelled in the u-s monday alone. 1,000 of them involving chicago o'hare and 400 of them in texas. a typical day at airports around the country sees only 200 cancellations. continuing our look at national headlines. elias: an ohio grand jury will not charge any officers in the 20-14 police shooting death of 12-year-old tamir rice in cleveland. rice was shot while playing near his home. the 12-year-old was holding a pellet gun when he was a shot, and the two officers involved in the
6:10 am
looked real. the lead prosecutor says it was reasonable to believe the officer who fired the fatal shot felt threatened. " given this perfect storm of human error, mistakes and miscommunications by all involved that day, the evidence did not indicate criminal conduct by police."" a witness who reported rice to 9-1-1 said the weapon the sixth-grader was holding was "probably fake". but the officers involved were not told this. prosecutors say the shooting of a child should not happen again, and called on toy gun manufacturers to stop making items that look like real guns. rice's family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the city of cleveland. elias: now for those traveling into polk county...be safe this morning... the sheriff's office has automated traffic enforcement vehicles at two locations.... one at the ...900 block of ne 46th ave and a second at the ... 9700 block of nw 118th ave they're watching
