elias: good morning and thanks for joining us for local 5 news midday...i'm elias johnson. elias: family and friends mourn the loss of a college student from des moines. this after the charter bus she was riding in monday crashed just fifteen minutes away from its chicago destination. now they plan to keep university of iowa senior nicole underwoods memory alive by giving back to someone else... she was studying to become a social worker and planned to attend grad school. they're hoping to raise money to create a 10 thousand dollar scholarship for a university of iowa human services student in her honor. they believe the scholarship would keep her love for life alive in someone else. " if she could help someone meet their dreams and share that passion, that would be what she would defintely want to happen. elias: the bus crash is still under investigation... four other

elias: meanwhile -- warrants are issued for two people connected to a missing newton girl. elias: investigators have been asking for help to locate 12-year- old charlene brown, she's believed to be traveling with her mother, misty shaver, and her mother's boyfriend -- kevin carlton. now they do say that charlene is traveling of her own free will and do not believe her mom misty to be dangerous. however, what's called a " material witness warrant" has been issued for her mother, and an arrest warrant for child stealing issued for the boyfriend. they may be traveling together, trying to get to spring, texas. anyone with information should contact the newton police department. elias:: the new year brings good news in the recovery from iowa's avian flu outbreak. a statewide ban on exhibitions using live chickens and turkeys will be lifted. under the ban all live bird exhitions at county fairs, auctions, and other

prohibited in the effort to stop the spread of the avian flu. the iowa department of agriculture will end the ban on january first. the outbreak ended up affecting more than 31 million birds in 18 counties. the ban affected county fairs and the iowa state fair. no new cases of the avian flu have been reported since the avian flu have been reported since june, and officials say iowa is now considered free of the illness. elias: new details now about an illegal butchering of a cow in guthrie county over the weekend. elias: the sheriff says he believes several people were involved in the killing and butchering of a cow just north of menlo. the remains of the animal were found on christmas day...and the images are graphic... we've blurred out a lot of this. authorities found two sets of tire tracks -- one from a car, the other from a pick up truck. they say the attempted robbery they were investigating and

visited patients in the pediatric unit at mercy medical center tuesday. and they didn't come empty handed....they also brought toys and stuffed animals to the children staying there. they even took the time to take some pictures with the kids. when they got a chance to talk with us -- they shared their thoughts on what it means to get involved with the community.
