next best chance of precipitation keeping away until the end of the work week next week and temperatures will be holding steady in the 20s and 30s. tag on cam alone amanda bree, thanks...let's get into the top five this morning.... number one-- what a day to be a hawkeye! the big game is here... the rose bowl. the 102nd rose bowl game kicks off just after 4 p.m.... vs. stanford in pasadena, california. and number two on our radar today-- all those traveling iowa fans! thousands flocked to the u.s.s. iowa battleship, docked in los angeles for a pep rally yeyeerday. it's just one of many places in the area that iowa fans have taken over. local five will be bringing you more coverage all day today. number three this morning-- ringing in 2016-- from the famous ball drop in times square, to mega fireworks shows around the globe-- it was a night to celebrate the new year. but, in our number four top story. new year's terror plots. the fbi arrested a man it says was planning to launch an isis- inspired attack on new year's eve in upstate new york. the 25 year old

attack revelers inside a restaurant-bar in rochester. he has been charged with attempting to provide material that city's fireworks show was also of precaution. and finally in the top five... fewer police you might expect for new year's eve celebrations it was just about there was a murder on court avenue, in the busy des moines bar district. ater that incident, there was an increased police presence patrolling the neighborhood. but a police spokesman tells us they have now returned to their normal numbers for that neighborhood. it's because a special funding program to field extra officers downtown, is out of cash. and developing now-- an investigation into a teenager shot in des moines. police say it happened in the 13-hundred block of east 14th street thursday afternoon. neighbors there answered a knock on their door and found a 14 year old boy with a gunshot wound in the

over the world? with an estimated 700,000 people lining the parade route tomorrow? pasadena police say the city is prepared and well protected for any security concerns. chief phillip sanchez/pasadena police (yellow) what we want them to be is aware? so you can come to the city of pasadena to have a great time at the parade? have a great time at the game? we are as safe as we can be. the chief says there will be about 1400 officers here? and they will be checking to streets for any items that are unattended?. people spending the night have to occupy the area and be next to their belongings? they have assistance from the fbi and homeland security. chief sanchez we're enhacing technology? there will be cameras up and down the parade route and those will be monitored 24-7? we have more than two dozen bomb detection sniffing k9 dogs that will be on the parade route and later on at the game as well. the chief says there will also be undercover officers mixed in with the crowd? parade goers i spoke with say when you have a crowd this big there is some concern? but they

amanda/lam it was a sea of gold and black aboard the u-s-s iowa in los angeles. thousands of the hawks battleship for a pep rally yesterday. 15,000 people were estimated up. "that's the biggest my dad. i never went to but he did, and i was born into black and gold. it's just an awesome experience to be down here with my dad for the rose bowl. that we might not be here together again and do this at the same "i was a 17 year old freshman in 1986, and i've been black and gold ever since." a close for a major shake-up in the ben carson campaign. candidate's two top aides have carson's manager and communications stepped down. carson has struggled in the polls since october when he was rivaling donald trump for the lead republican race. place behind cruz. three democrats will primary ballot. but not former maryland governor martin o'malley. instead, voters will choose between hillary clinton, bernie sanders, and fuente -- a san diego who recently moved to west des moines to campaign. o'malley fell 228 signatures shy of the thousand he needed from verified voters. he is already on the ballot in 18 other states and o'malley is a special guest on our weekly political show sunday. we talk with him about the issues he cares about, campaign strategy and he even brought his guitar for a little performance. it's at 9 a-m sunday, here on local five. topping world headlines today-- headlines today-- in dubai-- a huge fire engulfed a luxury hotel building thursday. there are at least 16 people with minor injuries. fire began on the 20th floor when residence plumes of smoke hours. but the city continued its new year's eve fireworks display right nearby as firefighters tackled the blaze. in hawaii, starting today-- you have to be at least 21-years old to buy tobacco. it's a new law going into effect. some cities and counties in the u-s already have similar smoking laws, but no other state does. stores are expected to put up new signs... and employees will be checking customers' i-d's. anyone who tries to buy tobacco under 21 will pay a 10- dollar fine for

the penalty for the store will be 5-hundred dollars. but the fines go up if the violation is repeated. flooding in missouri has reached peak levels this morning, even pushing the mississippi river to crest out of its banks. nearly two dozen people have died from the rising waters throughout the state, which are also swallowing homes and businesses whole. amanda/lam: and in iowa, the national guard is trying to help out the folks in missouri. the iowa national guard has sent about 45 members and 20 vehicles to the town of high ridge, missouri. missouri requested iowa's help after the town's water treatment plant was contaminated by floodwaters. the plant serves nearly 6,500 customers in high ridge and murphy missouri. and because of the flooding, more than 20,000 missouri residents are currently without clean drinking water. amanda lots more news and weather still to come... but first-- a helpful tip before you head out your door this morning. for those

the winner of takes home this it would be the win since the 1950s. amanda/1shot now everyone has a good luck charm. rabbits foot, gameday rituals, whatever it may be. but for one hawkeye, hers is the rose bowl medal she earned as a drummer in a university of iowa band. she wore that medal proudly for every hawkeye game. this thanksgiving, it went missing. but the good luck it provided her was never lost... local 5's claire powell is here with her story. " " "anyone who knows me knows about my rose bowl medal" take one look around dorothy carpenters home "we're certainly a family of hawkeye fans" there's no doubt. shes a hawkeye. and has been since 1956 when she joined the famous scottish highlanders, an all female bagpipe and drumming band. "i consider it a good luck charm too. i wear it to all teh games" that was until the monday before this thanksgiving. nearly 60 years later. she went to the grocery store with it on... "the chain was there, the link was on the chain, teh medal itself is gone. i could not imagine, what on earth, how i couldve lost it" so she put an ad in the paper and crossed her fingers. "lost and found, reward if found and my undying gratitude and my phone number" as she was figuring it was in a pawn shop somewhere, her phone rang. " this womans voice. please call, i have something important to tell you. that was all. could it possibly be... that shes calling about my rose bowl medal..." fate struck again.

candelight vigil in rememberance of a young life lost too soon. it was held inside the gym of the riverview early childhood center in webster city. everyone was asked to wear something purple in honor of payton. that was her favorite color.
