accurate weather team and we start with your forecast first." brad/wx wall weather adlib: happy new year everyone! we exceeded expectations today with reaching above freezing for the first time since last sunday! there were some clouds over northern iowa where temperatures were held down quite a bit. look for mainly clear skies for all of the state tonight with more cold conditions. the winds that caused some blowing snow in some northern counties will be gradually diminishing tonight, but wind chill values will still fall into the -0s for some areas overnight. saturday is looking sunny and even warmer for just about everyone with highs in the low 30s north to near 38 here in the metro. a weak cold front will come through saturday night into sunday, so we will be a little colder sunday afternoon with a nw wind. next week will start off seasonal and dry, but we are going to see a light wintry mix developing by thursday and friday across the midwest again. our best chance for precipitation will likely be friday and again next sunday when it could be just snow as we get colder. stephanie: it's a solemn night across the state as the iowa hawkeyes lost to stanford in the rose bowl. stephanie: then... des moines finished up 2015 with the most homicides in one

how the community is planning to start the new year on a better foot. " local 5 news at 10 in hd starts now. we are iowa" stephanie: good evening. welcome to local 5 news, home of we are iowa dot com. i'm stephanie angleson. glad you're with us tonight. stephanie: 20-15 was a violent year for the city of des moines. the 21 homicides this year were the most in nearly two decades. police are saying the last time the city hit 20 was in 19-93. local 5's jacob peklo joins us jacob? jacob stephanie, those numbers don't even include those just outside of the mass shooting at nightclub, or the city of waukee's nearly 40 years. the city has had a wide range, it's been averaging between 5 and 20 a year, the last year 19-90. so business owners are hoping this is truly just an outlier.

downtown des moines for about 11 years now. over the years, he's seen the area become a go-to destination. brendan kelley, stuffed olive bar owner: "i think a city that's booming like des moines definitely needs an entertainment district. i think they did a really good job creating it, they just need to keep it safe." sgt. paul parizek, des moines police department: "downtown is a safe place. court avenue is a safe place." even though kelley agrees with sergeant parizek, he says he'd like to see more officers downtown, especially on the weekends. he says the deadly late november incident got everyone's attention. brendan kelley, stuffed olive bar owner: "they weren't able to apprehend the guy for over a week. i think if there was some police force down here, they'd be able to capture him a lot quicker and people would feel a lot safer down here." kelley says several downtown bars pay into an officer buyback program for the warmer months. he says the mere presence of officers can be a deterrent to potential criminals. brendan kelley, stuffed olive bar owner: "in the summer time, there's police force down here and if there's any fights or disturbances or trouble makers, they take care of it right away." the 21 homicides in 2015 were the city's highest

not downtown. in fact, there were nine shooting incidents, including three deaths within a mile radius, just west of the fairgrounds. but with so many homicides taking place in november and december---months where there is normally less criminal activity--has businesses eying ways they can stay safer. sgt. paul parizek, des moines police department: "we're looking into some funding obviously that's a big issue, some strategies for the police presence, using some technology to help us, cameras specifically." brendan kelley, stuffed olive bar owner: "i don't think anyone down here is coming down here just to cause trouble, but sometimes things happen, and i think the police should be down here when that stuff does happen." jacob: kelley says it costs about $200 dollars per officer per night downtown. he says at the peak, there's about 12 officers patrolling the area on a busy night. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. stephanie: new details now

stephanie: it happened at a home in the 13- hundred block of east 14th street. initial reports said people in the home found a 15-year-old boy suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest on their porch. in reality -- police say evidence shows the shooting happened inside the home. after witnesses were interviewed, a 15-year-old boy was taken into custody for a felony charge of reckless use of a firearm. the injured teen remains hospitalized and is expected to survive. stephanie: meanwhile -- police are investigating after two men reportedly drove up and open fired on a group of men standing outside. it happened near the forest market on 21st and forest avenue thursday night. a police report says witnesses saw four men standing in the parking lot when a black sedan pulled up and two men inside started shooting at them before driving away. later -- when police found the men, they said they heard the gunshots but didn't see the vehicle. no one was injured in the shooting -- and no arrests have been made. stephanie/1shot a central iowa

extra help after his house burnt down in october. lehigh fire chief kirk kelley and his family lost their first house in 2011. then in october of 2015 their newly built home caught fire too. the family narrowly escaped but lost everything inside. now living in a temporary smaller home.. kelley's daughter kyah is stepping up to help. she's started her own business selling cookies, brownies and desserts to raise money. she told her dad she wanted to get help get a new home and their dog back living with the family. stephanie: hillary clinton started the new year with millions in her pocket - and shattered a campaign goal. stephanie: the new year's day holiday can't stop politics in an election year. spotted at today's rose parade in pasadena, california - a skywriting message bashing presidential candidate and gop frontrunner donald trump. it reads - "america is great, trump is disgusting, anybody but trump." six planes were used to write the message, which reportedly could be seen from a ten mile radius. aerial advertising company 'air sign' took credit for the message. it began tweeting before the event, promising a surprise for parade-goers. stephanie:

are iowa sports" jordan: it's a game almost a month in the making, but for most fans it's more like 25 years in the making. iowa taking on stanford in its first rose bowl since 1991! "you are looking live at one of the grandest venues in american sport." ah, the iconic brent musberger on the call... hawkeyes after their first win in pasadena in 57 years! not a good start. on the first play of the game! christian mccaffery takes the pass to the house. that makes it 7-0 cardinal like that. next possession, qb kevin hogan walks this one in to make it 14-0. iowa trying to get it together. cj beathard's pass is gonna be picked off and taken back for another score. stanford led 21-0

2nd quarter, not much better. the punt is returned by mccaffery and he is off to the races. he set a rose bowl record with 368 all purpose yards. cardinal led it 35-0 at halftime. 2nd half, iowa finally gets on the board with a field goal and they find the endzone here as beathard hits matt vandeberg for the touchdown. 38-9. later on it's beathard to akrum wadley who finds pay dirt, 38-16. but the damage was done, stanford adds another score here on the deep ball. the cardinal win and wins big, 45- 16 the final, sending iowa and its many fans home with a tough loss... jordan: we already heard from some of the players, now we head back out to pasadena, jon schaeffer caught up with hawkeye fans after the tough loss and has more from the rose bowl... " thank you jon. looking back on the 2015 season, still a lot to be proud of! 12-2 on the year, undefeated in the big ten regular season. they had the best start in school history which coincided with the first ever 12 win season. the hawkeyes were 4-0 in rivalry games against iowa state, wisconsin, minnesota and nebraska, don't forget they were 0-4 in those games last year. the hawks also made their first big ten championship game apperance and first trip to the rose bowl since 1991! that's a whole lot to be proud of! jon/3shot (wrap sports) stephanie: jack: we'll be right back... you're watching local five news at 10.
