crashes, but they are becoming less severe as designers get better at designing cars." natural sound of cars driving by another key factor is the new cable barriers, which reduce the number of head on collisions you could see along the interstate. this stretch of road in des moines was just finished in 2015. trooper michael clyde, iowa state patrol: "the cable barriers really reduce the crashes more, they have a little more give. they're designed to kind of break away and cushion a crash." because of the new barriers, cars will come to a stop on the same side of the road. instead of head on crashes, the cars will take often take less damaging blows. trooper michael clyde, iowa state patrol: "typically a rear end style collision is not a fatality, there's a lot of whiplash, but it's those head ons that we'd see on the interstate that would cause the biggest problems." natural sound of door opening but even with improved design on the vehicles, trooper clyde believes there are still some things that can be done to drop those numbers even further, like making sure everyone buckles up. natural sound of trooper clyde: "who's your insurance provider?" trooper michael clyde, iowa state patrol: "it's

in the low 90s. so, we're pretty good on seatbelts, but for those 7, 8 percent that don't wear their seatbelts, that accounts for half of the fatalities that we see." and as he helps with another accident, clyde is glad to see everyone was unharmed in this one. trooper michael clyde, iowa state patrol: "it's one of the hardest things for troopers to do is to give a death notitication to a family. so, we'd like to see it be zero." jacob now, while the new cable carriers are helping save lives, hitting one could give your wallet a shock. if you happen to hit one and uproot it, you're charged a $500 dollar fee to reset the cable and $100 dollars for each one that's broken free. live in the studio, jacob peklo, local five news. we are iowa. nikki: the highest total for deadly crashes was in 19-70. that year more there were 912. nikki: new tonight at ten...a man shot while trying to get food at mcdonald's. nikki: that's what a man told police happened to him last night at the mcdonald's on forest avenue

time of the day chicago finishes the season, 6-10 with the 24-20 loss.. jordan: the 2015 season was full of memories for the iowa hawkeyes. ya it was a rough finish, but when you think about where this team was a year ago, one game doesn't ruin it. these seniors have left the program in great hands for next year and beyond... "this game doesn't really define us, we still went 12-0 in the regular season and guys worked their butt off throughout the whole season. so i wouldn't say this game defines us, definitely a group of seniors that worked hard since january after the taxslayer bowl and i feel like we left it in a great place." "we made history at iowa, we're proud of that, but we just hope that we left jerseys in better places and that the younger guys and the guys coming back next year just surpass and do even more than we did last year so they can be even better." "i know this feeling is embarassing, i was just talking to leshun, he's going to be our leader next year, we don't ever want to be embarassed like this again, this is not

hawkeye football. and we just wanna learn from what we did wrong this game and definitely don't drag it to next season. next year, we got a whole group of leaders. canzeri, he did a good job of leading us and we followed behind him and next year we learn from what they, tevaun smith, austin blythe, what they set, they set the standards high and we just gotta not only maintain that leadership, but increase it. "you know this team did a lot of special things all season long, 12-0 regular season. hats off to the seniors they were a great group of guys and i'm gonna miss them, we're all going to miss them, it just stinks we couldn't finish off the season strong enough for them and that was a tough loss, but maybe we can use this as motivation going into next season and going into the offseason and i think we'll do that." jordan: we'll be right
